Wow, wasn't expecting this from a decade old game on a newer system, but it is what it is.... Ps5 is struggling to run Witcher 3... RayTracing seems to be the culprit, and maybe that can be fixed, but how does this make you feel? Anyone here find a need to revisit this game again? I played through it once and that was all I needed. Fun quests, lousy combat, but definitely genre defining.

https://wccftech.com/the-witcher-3-next-gen-ps5-performance-resolution-low-30fps-shaky/

The good news is, the PS5 version of The Witcher 3 clearly looks much nicer than it did on PS4, with much better lighting, reflections, and various asset improvements. Load times are also almost 10x faster. That said, it comes at a heavier cost than you might think, with Ray-Tracing mode in particular offering a relatively low resolution and a sometimes-juddery 30fps. You can check out the full analysis below, provided you have around 15 minutes to spare.

Post next-gen patch, The Witcher 3 offers two visual modes on PS5 – Ray Tracing and Quality. The Ray-Tracing mode is a dynamic 1440p, with the average resolution not being much better than 1080p (around 1188p). Ray-Tracing mode targets 30fps, but frequent juddery drops of 1 to 3 frames can happen in in busy areas like towns. That said, it looks to be a smooth 30fps out in the field. As for the Performance mode, it is a (very) dynamic 4K, with the resolution commonly sitting at around 1548p. Performance isn’t perfect in this mode either, falling to the mid-50s, but, of course, a few dropped frames are less noticeable at 60fps.

The ray-tracing is having an impact on the PC as well. On a 3080/5900X at 4K I have to run ultra performance DLSS and it still won't maintain 60fps. That's just with RT global lighting and not shadows/reflections/whatever the other option is.

@howmakewood: Yes it is. The consoles have RT GI and Ambient Occlusion. They do not have RT reflections and shadows.

To this day Insomniac is the only one that has decent RT on consoles.

Global Illumination is in the next-gen console versions: Link

Ray Tracing Mode — provides ray-traced global illumination and ambient occlusion with dynamic resolution scaling targeting 30 FPS for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

@hardwenzen: Ray Tracing is a gimmick and a scam. The 7900xtx which just released has the RT performance of the 3090ti and rasterization perf close to the 4090. Once the driver updates come, the 7900xtx will likely close the gap with the 4090. So yeah, AMD doesn't suck at Ray Tracing, and consoles are in good hands with future generations. Most gamers can't even tell the difference between medium RT and ultra anyways, not in motion. Nvidia just keeps scamming and people falling for thr bs as usual.

@hardwenzen: not really, the new 7900xtx can run Ray Tracing at the level of the 3090ti. The rasterization performance of the 7900xtx is within range of the 4090 and likely will close the gap with driver improvements. It's still significantly behind the 4090 and 4080 in RT but honestly, it's a huge jump in RT performance from a single gen. RT is a gimmick though, just another graphic setting like shadows or draw distance.

Though honestly can anyone even tell the difference between medium level of ray Tracing versus ultra? Is it worth it even?? That's the thing with Ray Tracing...yes the 4090 is amazing at it, but who really gives 2 shits when nobody really even notices a difference between medium and ultra. It's just another gimmick being scammed by Nvidia to justify their ridiculous prices.

AMD is garbage.

From what I've read so far, PC gamers with RTX 3080 Ti, 3090, 4080 and even 4090 all reporting terrible performance and DLSS not really seeing any performance benefits. There are some definite shader compilation issues, as well.

For me, Witcher 3 ran somewhat okay (ish) on my 3070 Ti/R9: 5900X for a while (50fps-60fps in Velen with RTGI and Reflections and a mix of settings) but it clearly shows this update needs a patch.

Consoles are weak sauce, should of waited for RDNA 3. 7900 XTX is just about better than the 4080 in raster, 3090 ti in RT. Sold out in minutes here, Sony/MS should of waited, so much better that last gen in RT.

@Random_Matt: you mistake it. The 7900xtx is slightly slower than the 4090 in raster and will likely close the gap with driver updates. It is currently between the 4080 and 4090. The RT is as you said on par with the 3090ti. Which is a massive improvement in one gen, but still far behind the new Nvidia.

Either way, RT is a massive gimmick. RDNA2 is still fantastic.

A patch is definitely needed, as I was also getting crashes when trying to load a save with RT already enabled. I'd have to load in and then enable RT. I do have my settings on Ultra+, but that doesn't seem to drastically affect me without RT. I didn't test too much and decided to wait, so i'm not 100%.

Ragnarok won more awards than you will see in all Xbox exclusive throughout this whole generation. AMD sucks almost as much as MS's first party devs.

Overhype. Broken promises (and drivers). Handcuffing the consoles. Meaningless buzzwords…

Sure, some of these things aren’t exclusive to AMD. But they’ve allowed Nvidia to sleepwalk through the GPU race for well over a decade, without any meaningful competition. Yet AMD fanboys will show up, every goddamn time, saying “this time things are gonna be different!”

Kinda reminds me of another faction 🤔🤔🤔

RDNA2 is the epitome of fraudulent. AMD moved on from that bullshit so fast… Speaking of frauds, it’s funny console kids didn’t seem to notice that. So many buzzwords and broken promises. We got PlayStation out here using software based VRS, and Digital Foundry has trouble noticing a difference in fidelity and performance. The differentiator between the Xbox Series X and PS5 has literally only boiled down to the CU count. Nothing else has mattered. So much for “full” RDNA2

Wow Witcher 3 the new Crysis can you run it?

Better question is why would you want to? This is the movie game that all movie game haters love. This and RDR2. Both look nice, both play like hot garbage. In a sewer.

I agree with the comments that state RT is madly over-rated. Even with a 3080 I find myself managing it more than actively utilising it.

In the future it will be taken for granted and we will all wonder why we were all so worked up about it.

You can call me Yoda, or Nostradamus. I am okay with either.

Because it's a game running on an old, shitty engine that even the dev is discarding in favor of UE5 for their future titles.

A 4090 drops from 148fps in native 4K down to 47fps with the RT effects added. That's a 68% drop and 101fps loss.

That thing is Cyberpunk-level demanding. It's also poorly threaded and barely uses the CPU properly. Shit optimization. Not surprising for CD Projekt Red. Witcher III was a mess at the start too.

Lol at "slightly" slower. The 4090 is over 25% faster in rasterization and 55% in ray tracing. The 7900 XTX and 4080 are neck-and-neck in raster but the 4080 blows it away in ray tracing.

Another prime example of CDPR being terrible devs.

God of War Ragnarok looks a generation ahead and runs at 40fps no problem in 4K.

Heck, even the buttery smooth 1440p @ 80-90fps looks superior to TW3 not running at 30 fps..

Only the RT reflections look nice to me, it's a Screen Space solution to make reflections in the water way better.

But turning on RT will kill the grees and grass from swaying hmmm. I wonder if simply toggling on one setting will kill the wind effect.

Yup, gotta agree with Juub here: the engine is old and shitty.

The effects in this engine isn't very good, this causes a lot of shimmering and requiring a AA solution.

Thing is: the TAA in this engine isn't very good either.

Both Cyberpunk and Witcher 3 have this issue, it's time to move on to UE5

@warm_gun: disagree. Smaa, ssaa, msaa and dldsr are good forms of anti aliasing.

Most console users don't seem to mind the blur so TAA was chosen as the default AA method. Msaa is also not usable anymore due to advanced rendering techniques and PBR.

Look, I don't mind TAA, as long as they give me an option to turn it off. Secondly the problem with CDPR games isn't the TAA, it's them implementing all these shitty effects that cause shimmering that require TAA.

My biggest hope is that developers start recruiting system war specialists.

@Heil68: pretty sure it's a free update too isn't it?

Is it? I would of thought they would of tried a cash grab, sadly like Naughty Dog with TLOU and so many others with their remakes/remasters.

They couldn't launch something worse than Cyberpunk.

To this day Insomniac is the only one that has decent RT on consoles.
