Small Plastic box...WTF did they think would happen. That's why they should have a box with openings to help it vent the heat.

Locking it in a tiny, almost airtight box will do that

Lots of electronics have warning signs and idle when overheating

I think he's saying that the red line means the system is dead is not true.. That's what I got at least.

Well of course not. The system (supposedly cos apparently it's fake) stays on and allows itself to cool down beofre letting you play again. It didn't even turn off

Yep, article says it took a couple minutes after they actually allowed air flow...

He didn't know what they meant by red light of death and probably assumed they meant dead console, which isn't true.

Nice try Lems...maybe next time.

it's hard to deny something when there are pictures. Unless those pictures were shopped?

But the console doesn't die though, it only shuts-down to prevent damage from heat. Maybe Yoshida is just playing semantics here... Who knows but once the console is released its reliability will speak for itself. But still, I'm very concerned about my PS4 pre-order now... Even if it shuts-down to prevent damage it still means that it overheats.

At least it has a overheat failsafe. A lot of equipment doesn't. When I was uni, we had some old CCU's (Camera control units) on a shoot that were suffering from the summer heat. There is no warning or shutdown feature on those things, we only found out that one of them had died was when we lost a bunch of our camera feeds.

I'm sure they knew it would shut down, but it's worth it rather than risking a PS4 being easily stolen.

But hey, at least it came back on pretty quickly.

Edit...

Oh, confirmed to be fake, nothing to see here. Probably some Microsoft shenanigans.

One of the main reasons for waiting to pick up any new console. Usually takes about 6 months before they have all the hardware issues ironed out. Unless it's a Nintendo Console...then you're good from the beginning.

Didn't the RROD actually mean the console was dead? This seems like more of a overheat warning, common on most consumer electronics

Two flashing lights on the Ring of Light meant the console was overheating.

Good to know there's a safeguard and thing won't just croak if you opt to put it in a transparent plastic box.

Wow dude, wow. Are you being serious? 1 month before launch and you honestly think they don't have games running on the PS4? Fanboys amaze me with their lack of logic.

This is a standard demo box, if the PS4 can't handle this RROD is incoming.

It's confirmed fake guys. Seriously, people on SW don't read. Looks like some overzealous lemming created this with photoshop to try and make the PS4 look bad.

So, it was just a warning because it was stuck in an enclosed case. We also got links claiming it's false anyway.

Welp, not sure what else there is to discuss here.

Herp derp whatever.

It can overheat every single day pre-release - I don't care as long as the retail product is robust.

This is why I never buy new console until about 2 years after release, and thank to all the early adopters who test the hardware for me.

If this is a widespread problem at launch the lems can have payback for all the years of being mocked for having a rrod box.

And so it begins... the Infamous Red Line of Death saga, Microsoft had theirs with the RROD with 360, it's now Sony's turn.

@Outsider-G: I guess the devs who have REAL Retail PS4's weren't lying about this after all. Hope this crap doesn't happen to mine. XBox 360 had RROD and now PS4 has RLOD. Maybe PC gamers were right. Naaahhhh.

So much misinformation about this out there, its amazing. Well, fanboys are going to fanboy I guess. If you're expecting this to 'be an issue' when the retail unit comes out, I think you're in for a surprise.

hahahahaa...............

The PS3 had an internal PSU and actually suffer less from over heating than the 360 did..lol

The PS4 is a cool running beauty that doesn't have huge power brick trow around, while been small, the xbox one look to be engineer by Shaquille O'neal..

Is easy to see sony hardware making experience is paying off,the xbox one is bigger than an 80's VHS and still has an external PSU,imagine how much bigger it would be if the PSU was internal,it would be bigger than a PC case..hahaha
