PS3 is starting to look like the Gamecube of this gen and it's sad:(

1.Nintendo begs devs not to drop the GC - Sony check

2.Nintendo actually starts paying for the commercials of multiplatfom games. All EA games would start and end with a GC commercial (they even tryed to pass SC2 off as an exclusive). Sony is now advertising games for EA like the Simpsons game, the commercial airs all the time and it always ends with a PS3 logo.

3.The price of the GC had to be dropped to 99 bucks and caused Nintendo to actually take a loss per unit for the first time ever. While Sony was already losing money per unit and have not had to stop production of the PS3 ala the Gamecube, they offer a 399 version cause no one would buy it at 499-599 making them lose even more money per unit (I'm sure that wasn't in the master plan). What happen to "they will buy it even if we launch with no games"?

4.Just look at NPD, PS3 is putting up GC numbers.

5.The most important of all, where are the **** games? Even the multiplat games are being release much later on the PS3 ala the GC and usually they are not as good.

How the mighty have fallen. Will the 399PS3 get them back on track or will it be like the Gamecube where sales spiked for a month or 2 then went back to pathetic levels while the sheep claim it was because of shortages?

I can agree with some of this. However don't forget to include the GCN choice of disc format and Nintendo's failure with the N64. It contributed to that Nintendo's systems are for kids and lack of 3rd party support. I wouldn't say the PS2 had cutting edge technology, in fact it was signifcantly weaker than the Xbox and GCN. What made the PS2 win is the large userbase which invoked developers to work within the limitations of the PS2 to pump out that cash. PS3 shares none of the successful traits as the PS1 and PS2, only the name. Which doesn't seem to be taking them to far.

I love the N64 as well, it was legendary in my eyes, but I thought the GameCube games were a bit shallow and lacked that Nintendo magic that the N64 had. The small 1.5 gig discs and less ram were short sighted.

Exactly, something these people dont understand and keep saying the ps3 is a failure. Now if the ps3 is still having poor sales like this in a year or 2 then this thread would make more sense, but the system hasnt even been out for a year yet people. And u do forget the high price of it was the reason it wasnt selling very well and it didnt have many titles out for people to have to own one. Now in 2008, if the ps3 doesnt sell better then it did this year with all its main titles coming out that year then I will be worried, but for now, its too early to even say that the ps3 is the next gamecube, xbox, dreamcast. Give it another year when all the big hits come out and with the $399 price, this holiday season the ps3 will be looking like a bargain to buy. :)

I haven't seen a PS3 NOT sit on the shelves since the launch shortages.I think this shows that the public still wants the PS3 but were put off more by the price than anything else. I think the $399 PS3 will go a long way towards getting the mass market back on board...at least in the short term.

Over the long-term anything can happen. But as I said, until we hear that Sony has had to CUT or STOP production, Sony doesn't have to completely worry. I agree though that getting developers to wait until sales catch up is going to be a big problem.

I haven't seen a PS3 NOT sit on the shelves since the launch shortages.I think this shows that the public still wants the PS3 but were put off more by the price than anything else. Why did the Playstation win the 32-bit era? Because Sony paid off publishers and developers to make games exclusive to their platform. Also the Playstation was easier to develop for compared to the Sega Saturn. It was also $100 dollars less than the Sega Saturn at launch, $399 vs $299. Since Nintendo went with the cartridge format, games cost alot more to buy for the consumer and developers couldn't afford to make games that would swap cartridges like you can compact disks.

Why did the Playstation 2 win the 128-bit era? First off, Sega failed to get enough momentum with the Dreamcast and Sonys hype machine killed it right off the bat. Next Sony launched the console at $299 the same as the original Playstation. Launching in 2000 it had a 1 year head start over the Xbox and Gamecube. Not only that, but it had Grand Turismo 3, Final Fantasy X, Grand Theft Auto 3, Metal Gear Solid 2 and Devil May Cry all available the same year the Xbox and Gamecube launched. Grand Theft Auto 3 was the largest reason for the PS2 success and keeping each Grand Theft Auto a timed exclusive helped Sony tremendously. After this first year of AAA titles and impressive sales, developers had no choice but to work with the difficult and less powerful Playstation 2.

It bothers me how Sony lost sight of what made their platform so desirable. Not only is it more expensive than the competition, launched a year late because of lack of Blu-ray drives, but it's the hardest to work with. They even became so full of themselves that they lost Grand Theft Auto 4 to the competition, as well as Devil May Cry , Ace Combat and Resident Evil. All of which were franchises the original Xbox didn't have.

i went to toys r us last weekend to get a jump on the holiday shopping... many, many ps3 sitting there... dust collecting...

LOL are you kidding..devs always complained about how hard it was to develop for the PS2. Heck even though the PS3 is hard to dev for devs still say its easier to dev for then the PS2 was because Sony has offered tools.

Oh and for the quote above yours, the Xbox launched around 21 months after the PS2 did. That is closer to 2 years, not one year.

Lets face fact, the 360 is ONLY around 5-6 million ahead of the PS3 and if both sell at their current rate this wont change much at all. So in around a year and a half we will be seeing the 360 at 25-26million while the PS3 will be at around 20 million. Ohhhhhhhhhh my...big difference, oh the dropping of dev support..lol. Please, last gen the PS2 had an 80 million console lead and still the PS2 shared most of its 3rd party support and multiplats with the Xbox. If thats how it was then why would devs all of sudden drop support for the PS3 when its only 5-6 million behind. Use logic.
