I'm guessing that the PS2 won't be discontinued till next year since it still has some software: Yakuza 2, Star Wars Force Unleased, Mercenaries 2, Persona 4, Ferrari Challenge, and a bunch of other games still coming out for it. If thats true then it will have had a 9 year life cycle which is much better then the 5 year cycles that both the Gamecube and XBOX had. I also think the PS2 will drop from $129 to $99 around this holiday season.

There are no gaming PCs that even come close to a 5 year life cycle without having to upgrade a component(s). I got a AMD 3800+, 1GB RAM, Geforce 7600GT only 2 years ago (it was a good mid-range computer for its time) and I recently had to upgrade to a 9800GTX and an extra gig of RAM just to play some games. I'll also have to get a dual core if I want to play newer games like Assasins Creed.

I like both consoles and PCs but consoles are better in terms of longevity.

The PS2 is extremely popular, and the fact that sony is still supporting it(a little bit) gives it longeviety

still, i sorta think it should die...

Hell yes, Yakuza 2, 2 new Shin Megami Tensei games (Persona 4 & The New Devil Summoner), Ar Tonelico 2. Sony will not drop it to atleast 2010.

I don't expect Sony to stop production of PS2 till fall next year and then they will full-on concentrate on PS3. As a PS2 owner I am glad its still getting games. PS2 & PSP are helping Sony offset the loss of PS3. Right now I am glad its being supported by Sony but when they start making profit on every PS3 sold then Sony should consider stopping PS2 production to concentrate on PS3 more.

Actually Sony promised a ten year cycle for PS2. Though if the PS1 was any indication, the final year will be abysmal.

2000. Specifically March '00 in Japan, and then October/November for the rest of the world.

The PS2 is just a testament of how far Sony tries to look into the future with there game systems, the PS1 even had a long life cycle. This could be a indicator of how long the PS3 will be around.

ps2 will have a 10 year life

sony stopped making ps1's in 2006. you can expect them to hold true to supporting the system for 10 years.

and it's true some consoles can beat the longetivity of PC's, but still, i mean playing a ps2 game now cannot compare to the experience you can get from playing a current gen game.

i mean, imagine if MGS4 was released on the ps2 for whatever reason. sure sony would be supporting the ps2, but it would just not compare to the experience you would get from playing the game on the ps3.

I hope so and that would mean probably two price drops one this year to $99 then one next year to $79 or so.

Theres more games then I thought coming to the PS2 theres Lego Batman, Mortal Kombat Kollection, King of Fighters 98', Spiderman, Rock Band 2, DDR, Tomb Raider Underworld, Smackdown vs. Raw 2009, and lots of Sports games. This is only for this year and theres still more games for early 2009 coming out. The PS2 will not get much though in 2009 but if it gets cut to $99 then it should still hold up and sell quite a bit.

Nice bottleneck on that gtx btw. Anyway you blah, blah, blah about longevity in PS2. That 7600gt gpu kills what is in PS2. So you could play PS2 type games forever, but you could still get med/low on a game like Crysis with a 3800/7600gt(just need the 2gb of ram). Listing AC(which is a Ps3 tile) is a fail comparision. Upgrading a PC is like going from PS2 to PS3. Anyway I just picked up a PS2 slim on ebay for $50. Mine got the DRE for good back in 06 to the point where the fix did not work anymore. Anyway can't wait to play SotC.

PS2 games are still coming out so it doesn't matter. If I stayed with a 7600GT for 8 years would I play the newest games? NO. If you bought a PS2 and 8 years later will you be able to play new PS2 games? YES.

I was lagging on Crysis with my 7600GT to the point of not being able to play. Consoles ftw.

If sony somehow manages to make the Ps3 as strong as the Ps2 was I'll be very pleased

Im talking both Sales and Library size. More sales mean more games and therefore higher chances of quality titles.

Exactly my point. You can't blame PC for going with the times. Yea PS2 has games coming out, but without the graphical horsepower so many expect from PC. That is two totally separate issues. You can't do that with PC because PC is doing games graphically better than that of the PS3. I'm guessing with Blizzards always fantastic job of optimizing, you could have enjoyed D3, and SC2 on a 7600gt. PC gaming can be expensive without a doubt, but only if you let it be.

Of couse. RE2 was when Leon was still a Rookie, so...Yeah. I also want to see Claire again though.

Above all else, my PS2 collection just feels incomplete without my favorite Resident Evil game.

I wonder if they could somehow work in new camera angles to old puzzle solving.

I'd really like them to mix the puzzles up like they did with the remake.

are people actually buying these games? loljohnnyblazed88

Supposing one had never had a ps2, then it is the perfect console to buy. Great price, the best game library at budget prices. And once you finish playing ps2 games, then xbox360/ps3 will be cheaper with better game libraries.

[QUOTE="neogeo419"][QUOTE="nVidiaGaMer"]

I like both consoles and PCs but consoles are better in terms of longevity.

nVidiaGaMer

What settings were you playing? If you have no problems playing PS2 games in 2008 then why do you have a problem playing crysis in low?

Even in the lowest possible res and settings, crysis looks 10x better than any PS2 game. And no it wont lag AT ALL on your 7600GT.

And besides where is your MGS4 on the PS2?It's not there so what is the difference here between buying a PS3 for MGS4 and upgrading your PC for crysis(which BTW your PC can play very smoothly at low)?Just like a PS2 only owner would not buy MGS4 cuz he will have to "upgrade" to the PS3,similarly you just dont buy crysis.

Seriously dude your argument is terribly flawed. You are at one side talking about a gamer who will be happy gaming on a PS2 in 2008 and on the other hand you are bringing in someone who "must" upgrade his PC cuz ZOMG he cant wait to play crysis in reasonable settings.:|

The ps2 is still alive:P

I think Sony is going to kill it off next year, but don't quote me on that
