Pokemon X and Y will be 1.7GB each, making them the largest Pokemon games till date.

But, and here's the kicker, they're the largest Pokemon games till date by a HEFTY margin.

  • Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow were all 512 KB (yes, Kilobytes. Half a Megabyte).
  • Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal were all 1024 KB (or 1 MB).
  • Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire were both 16 MB.
  • Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen and Pokemon Emerald were 32 MB.
  • Pokemon Diamond/Pearl were 64 MB.
  • Pokemon Platinum, HeartGold/SoulSilver, and Black/White were 128 MB.
  • Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 were 512 MB.

Given all this, what does X and Y's file size mean? Are they that big simply because of the new 3D graphics and orchestrated sounds for 700+ Pokemon, or are we looking at a game that will let us revisit one or more of the older regions? Maybe Hoenn?

I don't think it means anything, GameFreak had to do over 700 3D models.

Yes. And orchestrated sounds for the Pokemon? I call bullshit, we're probably still stuck with those GB quality cries.

A three times increase in size from B2W2 is easily explained by the jump to 3D models for battle and such.

If it was older regions, that'd be much more, I'd imagine.

I meant orchestrated music, sorry, and then cries for 700+ Pokemon. Got it all confused.

I'm not overly familiar with game programming. How easy is it to palate swap a polygonal model? If they needed to do a different one for shiny Pokemon, it's more like 1400 3D models.

Nah. At worst they'd need two sets of texture for each Pokemon. As long as its just a color change, there is no need to change the model itself.

Well, since I'm not far into my GD degree, I can't really answer. But from judging other games like P4A that use palate swaps, it's not much data at all. GF would be pretty unprofessional to double up on models for shiny pokemon.

The shinies will just use the same meshes but will have different texture. It doesn't really have much to do with programming, it's pretty just going into the modeling program (usually autodesk maya) and applying a different texture file to the model.

Shortly after posting, I kind of figured they would only need a new texture. Still, that's gotta take room. P4A also uses sprites. I imagine that's a bit different.

For some reason, I never want those GB quality cries to be gone. They always make me feel "I'm playing Pokemon," if that even makes any sense. Makes me remember how I used to think "no, their cries are supposed to be their own names, not this."

Oh god, no. Keep that shit in the terrible anime. But for the love of god, Gyados could easily sound more intimidating than TV static. Doesn't mean the charm has to go.

The only pokémon that will say its name is Pikachu and that is mainly for the Pokémon Amie.

Nah, its cause of the graphics.  Up until now they ahve been pretty poor.

PS - is there a good video showing off the audio of the battles?  I always hated the poor quality of the pokemon cries.

Map data usually isn't all that big, especially when they recycle the assets of the Gen 6 region. If it's big, than it's usually the sound. Sound usually takes up the big chunk of data, as well as the textures. If they changed all the midi BGM to orchestrated version, that means it's a significant increase in game size in terms of bytes.

Doesn't mean anything at all, er regarding visiting other regions.

Probably just new models, landscapes and sounds.  X and Y are vastly improved visually over predecessors.

Gyarados doent repeat his name in the anime. but beside pikachu i doulp the others pokemon will have their anime cry because the game comes in like 5 l;anguages and pokemon have diferent names , pikachu have the same game on every language represented in the game.

Yeah I remember reading a tweet from one of the publisher employees for Fire Emblem Awakening that the music took up most the game.

It is at this point that I remind everyone that the amount of data a game uses up has absolutely nothing to do with the overall quality of the game.

For some reason Nintendo games have some ridiculous storage sizes.

Metroid Other M: 7.28 (This is more than alot of PS3/360 games)

Resident Evil Revelations: 3.17 GB (This is more than any Vita game)

Rayman Legends Wii U- 7 GB

Rayman Legends PS3- 2 GB

Looks like it has an extremely boring and unimaginative world to explore with terrible battle scenes (An empty green field with some trees...yay).  This will be the first Pokemon game that I don't buy.  Said the same about B/W and ended up buying those and realzing they were crap, I won't make the same mistake twice.  They really haven't made a good pokemon game since R/S and X/Y looks to be the worst yet.  Whats the point of having 1.7gb of data if the game is so dull looking?

I think that's up to the publishers more than anything else; most Nintendo platform games are actually tiny in size. I didn't know there was as much disparity between the PS3 and Wii U versions of Rayman though, that's interesting.

Yes, going from 2D to 3D would make the file size considerably bigger.
