Open platform based on Android. (video -http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ouya/ouya-a-new-kind-of-video-game-console)

Do you think it's a smart / dumb idea coming this late competing with the big 3?

Edit: Kotaku picked up on it, and they seem to have generated some interest as they reached and exceeded their minimum pledge target in less than a day.

I think if it needs a Kickstarter, it has no chance.

Well I think that a 2013 release date is the perfect time to release a new console right around the time the next gen systems come around so people will want to be buying systems anyway, I hope it is released I think it looks pretty cool and I may consider buying one if the games for it are good

No wonder it needs a Kickstarter, This is like the Indie Console. A Console built for Independent games.

what's funny is that all of that can be found in the PC.

I'm posting this Comment on this thread, and watching that Video on Kickstarter, ON MY TV.

yeah but a good gaming pc is never under 100 dollars like the Ouya will be and plus it won't need to be upgraded every few years, the exact reason I don't do pc gaming; it hurts my wallet too much

It won't do very well. The whole kickstarter thing is like alarm bells. Also no one will chance a console they have no history with especially in these money times

If it doesn't get upgraded, then it will never get any better.

You don't have to upgrade your PC, games won't start to get worse if you don't, you just won't be able to play the next genration of games. Just like how my ps2 can't play ps3 games.

in a world where devices like raspberry pi exist for homebrew type stuff, i dont really see how this will capture the console market or the homebrew market really. Most of the times developers are going to go through the channels that already exist, to me this idea seems too far fetched.

I think it's a great idea, and if the price is right and they end up under cutting the big 3 in price....then they stand an even better chance around the holidays. I for one will back them, the more console choices the better.

They seem to have already met & exceeded their pledge target!

When I started this thread they were at around $100,000. Now they are > $1 million (in less than a day!)

It's perfectly in line with the goals and purposes of the console. And since they've gone 400k over their goal after the first day. I'd say they're off to a great start.

This uses Android, which means: no games, minor attraction of developers, will be forgotten in a few months just like all Android devices.

Sounds like it's gonna be filled with gimmicks once again. How many times did they say 'living room' and 'TV'? Many. I do not like the sound of this, so no thanks.

I'll stick with PC and PlayStation.

Mr_BillGates
 This will have its own dedicated app store so the current relative weakness/strength between mobile platforms is moot. Android provides an easy development environment, but Ouya games and apps will be designed specifically for Ouya. The biggest issue that daunts android devs (fragmentation) won't exist on this platform, and controllers will be ubiquitous. If it generates an audience, a lotta of devs are gonna be tripping over each other to give it a go.

No, you get a console which attracts the mobile developers, that have bypassed PC.

My PC can do the same function, and i dont have to spend a hundred bucks on a console rather than the indie games themselves. Oh and i have plenty of USB controllers.

What function? Play games? Congrats on missing the point. They are developing a platform, so you'll find games and teams not/no longer involved in pc distribution, due to the difficulties monetizing on the platform. So, no, your PC won't do every game this will.

you keep saying PC, that's exactly the point. this is not for PC this is for TV.

I wanna be able to sit back on my couch and play all those beautiful indy games, with a sick controller, and have a 10000 game library worth of emulator games.

You can plug a PC into a TV and use a controler.

I am pretty skeptical of this, its hook really doesn't appeal to me at all. I can't see it overtaking the PC in the Indie games department.

This is like Onlive, only it has all of those indie games on....oh....dear lord....

This is Android Based, Onlive has an Android App.....

What if Ouya and Onlive combine together?

Oh snap.

I was saying a google console would come out since last year. But no one even responded to my posts! That's life on system wars.

This is just the beginning. It's a prototype console trust me. If google was serious they'd put the big 3 out of business just like apple.

Sure, I'll bite. If it's easier to develop for AND is at leats 2x more powerfull than current gen systems (So a dual Core, and 1GB RAM and a gimped 5750) I'd buy it. The lower dev costs might lead to cheaper games and less DLC (HAH! keep dreaming!).

And I since I mostly play on PC (and sometimes my PSP) I have absolutley nothiong to lose other than maybe $200-$300. If it fails I won't cringe (much).

oh for Pete's sake, This thing was developed to play Flash Games and Java Games that can be found on Android Devices.

It's just an Open Console like the PC.

herpa derpa-licious.

It's made to bridge the gap between the explosion of development on mobile platforms and the traditional console. If all you could think of is emulated games, you've massively failed.

Already doubled its goal in 24 hours, with over four weeks to go. And they've to expand the number of early release consoles 3 times...

They're already looking at that. it seems. Either in this thread or the other one I have a quote of them saying if funding is right we may see some good hardware. Now I maybe misunderstanding them but if that's the case, I wonder how they will keep the $99 price tag.

Ugh huh. Which explains why Android has loads of quality games such as Infinity Blade and its sequel. Oh wait, those are exclusive to Apple. Even a pro-multiplatform developer like Epic doesn't give a damn about that messy platform, and yet this $99 toy is suppose to be a pure gaming console. Haha!
