Emily rogers has commented on what the NX will be like in its final retail form. Keep in mind though that these are all rumors still and nothing is certain until Nintendo actually decides to reveal the console.

Here is what you can expect from the final retail product:

  • Custom Nvidia GPU chip
  • Region Free (No region lock) <– Confirmed this.
  • Six inch (6.2 inch?) multi-touch screen (Heard nothing about a stylus)
  • The touchscreen has 720p resolution. <— 100% Confirmed.
  • 32GB of built-in internal storage
  • SD card support
  • Supports USB 2.0 and 3.0
  • The dock has two 2.0 usb ports and one 3.0 usb port.
  • The device is around 14 – 15 mm in thickness.
  • The right analogue stick will be below the face buttons.
  • Camera and microphone are not built into the NX portable device.
  • Cooling is still a little noisy
  • Detachable controllers (motion controls and next-gen vibration technology) <– Everything Laura Kate Dale said in her article was correct.
  • Share / Social button that Laura Kate Dale posted is true.
  • There are at least two shoulder buttons. I haven’t heard anything yet about triggers.
  • Battery Life — Ehhh not great. I haven’t heard an exact number of hours, but it doesn’t sound great.
  • Below PS4 and XB1 in raw power.
  • Supports Unreal Engine 4 and Unity Engine.

source

This could be troubling news for the NX. If it is being billed as a hybrid console that can be taken on the go, if the battery life is not that great it could be a disaster. It also seems like it will be like the wii u gamepad, so Nintendo is making the wii u 2.0...

Are you interested in this or do you feel like Nintendo hasnt learned why the Wii U had failed so badly?

I'm still gonna wait on the official word for battery life...but if its under 5-6 hours, that would be problematic...but hey, Unreal Engine 4 support is cool!

Aren't they going to reveal the NX sometime this month or am I remembering things wrong?

@aigis: I wouldnt doubt it, would help ease the failure of that thing from our minds. Anything that even resembles the Vita, shouldnt be trusted.

@PSP107: From what I've been gathering....yeah pretty much, handheld that connects to your TV when you're home so you're technically "console gaming" but you can take it on the go like a handheld...

@PSP107: That's a pretty good question...if I had to guess (which at this point is all we can do) I bet you 50$ would go to the dock that connects the NX to the TV, and 200$ to the handheld itself...Nintendo is notoriously good at keeping things cost effective, so I'm optimistic we'll see something around 250$...again, this is all guesswork off the top of my head though :p

And to make sure it's not confused with the WiiU the way the WiiU was confused with the Wii... they will officially name the NX, the WiiUMii (or the Wii2U)

everything there is plausible but still tells us little. so assuming its true for a second:

it sounds like a more powerful vita with a bigger screen that can be connected to a TV.going by the description of its size though it also looks like it will be more focused on playing around the house rather than while waiting at the bus stop. i think nintendo realise that most handheld owners dont actually use it outdoors much. the size could also mean that nintendo have put a full fat X1 in there with no compromises. it sounds like there is active cooling and, with the battery concerns, it means nintendo havent focused on playing on the road.

the vibration comment is also interesting. i wonder if its using the haptic feedback system of the steam controller.

on paper that might sound bad but i would argue that if the vita had nintendos backing it would be considered a classic. if it had nintendos backing and also the vitas early western 3rd party then even better (thats the kind of support that would work for nintendo....exclusive titles from 3rd party developers). that is actually quite appealing.

the lack of sheer horsepower also comes with the bonus that it will cost less to develop for compared to a PS4 or X1. this could make it a very nice target for AA developers and indies making multiplat games and its those developers that are making most of the more interesting games. without AAA titles to out shout them it could be good exposure. it looks like it has solid support for middleware (unity and UE4 is a good start).

for nintendo it also makes a lot of sense. the games they make dont need 6 processors or desktop conquering graphics. unlike the wiiu, the hardware itself is pretty standard so 3rd parties wont need to learn a completely alien system. hopefully some of the deficencies of the wiiu have been addressed though (especially around AA...it should be standard on all games on the NX).

it does mean AAA 3rd party multiplats are off the table. it also means nintendo have 0 intention to pursue things like fullHD or 4K (the 720P screen makes a lot of sense and chances are all games will target 720P native regardless of whether its on the telly or not).

its hard to say if it really is a good idea though without seeing the complete system and the launch games to back it up.

No, it won't. Its going to get a new 3D Mario, a new 2D Mario, the next mainline Pokemon games, Mario Kart 9, and Smash 5.

In other words, it will get support that the Vita could only dream of. And that's not even talking about the fact that Dragon Quest is already confirmed for the NX, and Monster Hunter will likely move to the platform as well.

The Vita died because Sony allowed it to rot and die a slow and painful death. Sony never cared about the Vita, and it's failure is the result of that lack of concern.

Nintendo handhelds are proven sellers, and this has all the markings of a handheld. I highly doubt it will fail. Hell, a new Pokemon game alone will sell large numbers of units.

Something Sony could never do once they lost Monster Hunter.

I'm not sure that Nintendo has corrected all their mistakes with this, but they may have corrected enough:

  • Nvidia architecture will be easier for most 3rd parties to work with even if it's not on par with the twins.
  • It sounds like there will be a fairly traditional controller setup despite all the "innovation" talk.
  • Region free is cool.
  • 32 gb hard drive is low, but cartridges and SD cards should alleviate that to an extent.
  • All Nintendo first party studios supporting a single system.

Sounds like Nintendo is aiming for the Japanese market. That's essentially what they tried to do with the Wii U gamepad acting as a double screen for gameplay. And a portable console to continue a game session, may appeal to that market.

I'm not crazy about the NX from what I've been hearing. But I can't make a judgment call yet of how will it fair. Although ever since the rise of smartphones. Consumers have not been wanting to carry around additional devices in the west at least. And personally, if I do go out. My days are too busy to be wanting to continue my PS4 game sessions for instance. Particularity since I drive almost everywhere. And in the rare event I do get bored and can't leave a place just yet. I have my phone where I can access a load of content from other interests, to entertain me.

The 3DS sold 60 million units and that was during a large boom period for mobile games.

In fact, the 3DS just won the month of July on the strength of Pokemon. The 3DS is almost always the top selling system on Japanese charts week after week.

Handhelds are not dead. The market may have gotten smaller, but there will always be an audience for people who want to play real games on the go.

32GB is more then enough if the system is a handheld with a base that allows it to output to the TV. Which from the specs, its clear the NX is more the likely a handheld system.

The complaints about the 32GB of storage are moot considering the SD slot and physical media. But I suppose the latter is a matter of preference...

ok some people are using "industry standards" as criticisms.

720P. absolutely correct for such a device. going 1080P increases costs, power draw and wastes processing power. having a high DPI is good for reading text on a website. its not so useful for a small screen in games. for a 6" screen 720P is spot on.

32GB of storage. the system does 2 things to allievate this. 1) it uses carts. it wont need to install games to the internal storage. the only possible concern is patches. for nintendo games at least this shouldnt be much of an issue though. it was more of a problem for the wiiu because its disc drive was rubbish. devs couldn't use the internal storage as cache to help alleviate loading problems and there was things like 10GB of texture data for X. this should be a non issue on the NX (assuming its using carts).

2) for those that would prefer to go digital it will also be using industry standard SD cards (as per the rumour). those are pretty cheap and a high capacity one should go a long way. again no point in using the X1 or PS4 as a benchmark. the vast majority of NX games wont even get close to 50GB per game. the wiiu is a better system to be looking at in terms of game size in GB.

If people can complain about AA batteries in the Xbox controller then its perfectly logical to complain about having to spend money on more storage due to having a paltry 32GB.

It's not really a valid complaint though. Some phones come with as low as 4gb, and 32gb is pretty standard for the more expensive phones. 64gb is about as much as you see.

To be fair, AA batteries are fine too, hell they're welcome even, look at how shitty the ds4's battery is.

It does have some validity. This isn't a phone. Its a gaming device that is supposedly Nintendo's new home console entry. The standard in that realm is 500gb.

@aigis: Lets talk facts for a second.

Sheep a while ago , before NX rumors surfaced they were hoping for

1) Traditional console as of power and features

2) No gimmick/fancy controllers or gimmicks in general

3) 3rd party support as good as the other consoles in the market

I talked extensively with sheep , on internet and in real life , about what they wanted from next Nintendo console. EVERY SINGLE one of them asked for those 3 things i mentioned above and many of them went as far as to say that they will be kinda dissapointed if Nintendo try again their own thing.

Now what we have

1) Low end hardware once again

2) THE WHOLE system being a fancy piece of hardware not just its controller

3) With that kind of low power PLUS the usage of cartridges ... 3rd party support as we know it from other platforms is a big nono , specially as games getting bigger / better.

And now suddenly sheep : "CANT WAIT for this" , "NX will be the best" " Zelda is awesome " etc etc .

All in all , NX has a big chance to be a commercial success because in reality is a handheld that plays on TV and not a console that can play as handheld so all these 3DS fans are ready to jump on BUT commercial success or not , the VIABILITY OF THE SYSTEM is a big question.

I dont care if NX sells 200 million units if after its first 2 - 3 years go into life support. Thats the big question about NX imho. Will it end up a dust collector or not ? Will NX focus on handheld oriented games to fill the 3rd support gap from console/PC oriented games ? Will they provide NEW AAA CALIBER IPs ? ( AAA CALIBER not random craps that might end up being fun )

Time will tell , what i know is ... this is a BIG GAMBLE NINTENDO has to win by all means necessary

The complaints about the 32GB of storage are moot considering the SD slot and physical media. But I suppose the latter is a matter of preference...

I agree. 500 should be the minimum.
