NPD: Grand Theft Auto V is the Best Selling Game of All Time

Grand Theft Auto V is now the best selling game of all-time in terms of revenue and tracked unit sales. That's according to the NPD Group's August analysis for video game sales in 2017. Not only is that incredibly impressive, but it proves just how strong GTAV is almost four years after the game initially came out on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles.

According to the NPD Group's monthly sales reports, Grand Theft Auto V was the second best selling game in the month of August, behind Madden NFL 18. But it's important to know that Madden 18 came out that month, while GTA V's been on the market since 2013 in one form or another. GTA Online in particular has proven to be a huge boon for the comapny. It should be noted that digital sales for games like PUBG aren't accounted for in the NPD Group's listings.

Grand Theft Auto V beat other new titles that month too including Uncharted: The Lost Legacy which also came out that month to third place.

"Grand Theft Auto V has now been on the market 49 months and has achieved 41 Top 10 chart appearances, 16 more times than any other single title in reported history," wrote NPD's Mat Piscatella. "In addition, Grand Theft Auto V is the all-time best-selling game by both revenue and units in tracked sales across PC, console, and portable with digital and packaged combined."

GTA V is a great game and somewhat deserves its success but the fact R* is more interested in MP DLC and microtransactions instead of SP DLC makes me fear for the future of the franchise...

GTA 5 is worse than COD1 and UO. later COD games are as bad as GTA games.

I bought the game at launch on PS3 and had fun. Many of those sales are rebuys when they released it on next gen systems as well. I personally won't rebuy until it's $30 or less so I'll be waiting a while.

The fact the game has continued to sell so well is still really impressive.

Thats pretty cool and all, but im sure theyre counting PS3 and Xbox 360 too. Thats a lot of consoles to add up. I wonder how it compares to Minecraft.

I'm certainly not surprised, it's an excellent game has been selling very well ever since it was first released. Anyway kudos to Rockstar and I'm very hyped for Red Dead Redemption 2.

GTA San Andreas is still the best one yet and that is a Single player only game (without PC Mods). Beat that game over 10 times and found new things every time. I fear GTA 6 will focus more on MP and give us a half-assed SP (GTA5's SP isn't that memorable as it is)

correct. GTA is one of the worst video gaming franchise ever made. each and ever game is boring mediocre snoozefest. they are boring open world with bad driving, shooting, story and majority of missions are just damn boring.

vice city was the game i had some fun with but even that game i never beat.

I don't get it. I didn't finish it. I do think it's one of the better GTA games I have played, but they all become kind of aimless for me after a bit and I wind up wandering off to something better. Maybe the thug life just isn't for me. I keep telling myself I'll go back to finish it....

There must be some cult out there that has to sacrifice a certain amount of GTAV discs to Cthulhu every month. Shit's crazy.

I'd probably be part of the craze too if they'd up their mechanics and mission designs. GTA games are so damn impressive on a technical level, but damn it man. Take some of that money mountain they've made and put it towards some better gameplay plz. If they can sell this much with their status quo, imagine how much they'd make if the games actually played well?

Well they never got any money from me, and they won't when RDR2 comes out either.

the game was also the top 3rd party game. ever since GTA3,vice,san andreas when it invented the open world genre. it was the top 5 best selling games in the ps2 generation.

GTA 4 on 360/ps3 continued this. GTA 5 though because of it's robust online and playablity on all platforms just made it into a phenomenon. it is arguably the best game on ps4 or xbox 1.

Its not surprising or disappointing. The GTA series has always been a huge success. They have only released two major console entries over the last two generations (IV + expansions / V). They have also continued to support the online portion of the game heavily since the awful/broken launch. The biggest concern is whether they will ever revisit the single player expansion model. There is simply too much money to make in the multiplayer component.

Well deserved. Every year R* will come and make a game so great, so technically impressive and light years ahead of competition, being considered the GOAT by almost everyone but the most hipster of gamers, that it will go on to be the highest rated, highest selling game of that generation. No developer comes close.

Not a bad game to be the best-selling game of all time. Not my favorite and even though I played through it twice on my ps3, outside of the few assassination missions, Rampages, races, and business events like driving the taxi, the offline world gets boring real fast. I'm not too happy that the direction many games go is online-prevalent. Technically you're paying for a rental. Sure it will last a long enough time and perhaps if you play it long enough you will have gotten your money's worth but the fact that I can still boot up Ocarina of Time or F.E.A.R. or any GTA game but eventually the servers will go down for a game like LittleBigPlanet 3 for instance bothers the hell out of me.

Went way off-topic there. GTAV is a great game. But its strong points are the story and ONLY online IF you're playing with friends, otherwise online sucks ass on account of the trolls.

Why do people think it's funny to attempt to take a shit on GTA:V, it's a really good game and probably the most optimised game on last gen consoles as well.
