In something that came out of left field....

In a surprise announcement today, Nintendo revealed that the NES--which was originally released in the 1980s--is returning to stores. This is not a joke.

The NES Classic Edition will launch on November 11 with 30 bundled games. As you can see in the image below, it's very, very small.

The NES Classic Edition will cost $60. It plugs directly into your TV using an included HDMI cable. As for the games, there are 30 in all, including classics like Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, and Kirby's Adventure.

Jeez they really think their fanbase is stupid. Is this supposed to distract from the lack of new games for Wii U this fall?

@FinalFighters: they should make a device that has access to the NES, SNES. 64 and Gameboy libraries. Maybe even GameCube too

Given the internet's view, I doubt they'd want to touch ANYTHING post SNES besides scalping purposes (especially if you're the circa 2006 part of the GameCube fandom).

@nintendoboy16: maybe, but a lot of the younger crowd would probably buy a cheap box that has access to all of those old games

Day 1, great games list. So cheap too, and I can't wait to play with an NES controller again!

I'll pass. I played many of those games but many others I loved on the system are lacking; notably Ninja Turtles. I'll stick with the emulators on my PC and Kindle.

Aw... Disappointing. I thought it would be able to read the OG cartridges, but the size indicates it does not.

I have one of these kind of things for Atari. I took it apart once. It's just a super-cheapo micro controller with the games stored on flash rom.

...Might as well get a raspberry pi and make your own one-box-to-rule-them-all device.

That's a major problem with licensed games, I'm afraid. Makes me glad I found copies of The Simpsons: Hit and Run (GameCube) and Jackie Chan Adventures (GBA), and still have the systems to play not only those, but also still have Zatch Bell! Mamodo Battles (GameCube).

All this is an example of is making money. Nintendo doesn't care about its base or else the Wii U would have been handled much differently. Nintendo knows retro is in and wants to cash in.

@nintendoboy16: Agreed. I would love a compliation of Jurassic Park games through time on disc; Genesis, Sega CD, Game Gear, SNES (NES is basically the same), PS1, and 3DO. How cool would that be of Universal to release. Ah nastalgia.

I'll be getting one day one. Because I have the funds, it has great games, and it will more than likely be a collectable. Hell I'll buy two for that reason. Now just make one for the SNES.

It is just too darn cute not to buy. I'll be getting one.

Heck it'd even make a great holiday gift. I know my dad personally would love to relive his gaming glory days with one.

It's a damn good deal. My only problem is the inclusion of the dreadful Simon's Quest. It's as much of a classic as Hitler was a decent human being.

The fact that it doesn't play carts is a big fail. This is, frankly, no different from those other closed novelty systems like the Atari stick with games baked in. If, on the other hand, it also allowed you to play carts, it would be of substantially greater value to those with an NES library, and would allow for its 30 game library to be expanded. You know that cheap Genesis "reboot" you can find in Bed Bath and Beyond? That does this plus plays cartridges. I'm betting the Genesis is poorly made (it's only a licensed product), but it has important functionality that this lacks.

Well not exactly what I had in mind this is a great first step and I'm really excited that they are making new NES controllers again. I could probably easily retrofit them to work with original NES's. $10 a pop is fantastic.

In fact you can get a zip of all the NES games ever made.. from a place. ... for science.

Seeing as this has snapshot saves, it's definitely emulating the games. Might be possible to load the other ones on here too.

This is more or less a way for Nintendo to test the retro waters and see how much possible demand there is for such products. This isn't meant to be a replacement for those of us who still own an original NES console. This is more for casual gamers that either want a cheap way to relive their childhoods, or for younger gamers to experience classic Nintendo games for the first time. It's really a win/win situation here.

This is similar to the Atgames clone consoles you see at all the drug stores. Nice list of games: Double Dragon II, SMB, and SMB3 are essentials.

Didn't read anything about internet or bluetooth so adding games and using wireless controllers seems to be out. Hopefully not, as the cord on the Classic Controller is pretty damn short which somewhat defeates the purpose of the Wii controller port instead of the original port.

I have a Moga, Retron3, Wii, SNES and GC pads for PC so this redundant for me, but I believe this will be insanely popular. Gives adults their late-80s nostalgia trip and lets the kiddos experience the glory of 8-bit gaming.

One big difference, this is an official Nintendo product made by Nintendo. They aren't going to outsource this like Atari did with those Flashback consoles.

@iandizion713: what? I'm not lauding the Genesis knockoff. I'm saying this is lacking basic features that shitty knockoffs like that Genesis have had. Cmon, you honestly think 30 baked in games, with no opportunity to expand a library that lacks some basic NES classics, is the best thing they could have done with this? And for 60 bucks? That isn't a steal, but would be closers if it played carts. I say this as a Nintendo fan like yourself.

@xantufrog: I just paid like $7 dollars last month for Metroid alone. Its a steal to me. Sure you dont get all the cool modern features, like wireless controller, Miiverse, online, etc, but we have Virtual Console for all that expensive stuff.

Not only that, but Nintendo has to pay to use a few of the games. Its basically 30 games at $2 each. Pretty cheap.

Great list of games. All of the real big classics are there.
