In the news

https://www.engadget.com/2019/10/17/nintendo-switch-15-million-npd/?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAFRDNXS08xh2ohrtszoihUm0EHHfEAnFGlQIbACwu__MmQ4pm2deGfwIqNQXQcVpS4sLa2dbxGjXCXcI9jzzSyw_7R4K6MDoLg-f1IkejLeveV9UO7Dx0AGrDlIYa-JVYdISkYux6yMWmiF_AtHT_nCeNYEHgXh8n59t_3TgZLLF

They have to be approaching SNES all time numbers by now.

Someone go back to my posting history and look at how successful I predicted the Nintendo Switch would be before it launched.

Switch is a handheld so it’s not surprising. Nintendo does well with handhelds.

It’s still pretty funny they had to drop out of the console race though.

Launch aligned, it's behind PS4 and Wii, but ahead of 360 and 3DS.

It's bad because you don't like it? Why do you think it's selling so much? Could it be you are flat wrong? No, it must be that anyone who disagrees with you is an idiot.

@Xplode_games: I also predicted the Switch would be a major success. But then again, I also predicted it may hit 100 million worldwide by the end of its lifespan. Might have to wait a good few years to see whether that prediction pans out.

Where did i say u are a idiot if you disagree with me? Making stuff up or something? U took your vitamins today bro? anyway if you don't like me for whatever reason on a personal level u are free to ignore me, no reason to get upset. I am just pixels.

Anyway to explain it a bit further.

There last successful gen was 150m consoles and 150m handhelds. Last sony's somewhat successful gen was PS3 with 90m consoles and a PSP with 70m sales.

Those are 300 million devices for nintendo and 160 million for sony.

Both PSP and PS3 weren't much seen as successful against the generations before it, the gen after it for nintendo was a complete disaster and they still ended up selling 80m combined devices or even 85m forgot the exact numbers.

The switch is now 2,5 years on the market, sold what google told me 33 million, lets say it stays valid for 7+ years. that's 100m total. That's not even as much as a single device in a area that had far far less gamers. As the gamer market is booming every single year forwards.

So how exactly is this impressive? It's actually pretty bad. It's 1/3th of the market they had then. It's not even as big as a some failed gen for sony.

PS4 is so called a massive success by anybody, but even that box is getting replaced next year and just now passed 100m. It's coming nowhere near there 160 and 150m devices sold.

Then lets not even talk about xbox what a disaster that is.

It's not just nintendo that's in rough water, its also sony and microsoft. It's the whole handheld/console market. This is why subscription services are aggressively pushed because that's what keeps them afloat that's what helps them with the struggle on hardware sales but low amounts of hardware sold equals low amounts of subscriptions also as u limit your market by the amount u sell.

As this topic is about hardware and not software and there market shares. The switch should be selling far far more then it currently does to be called impressive.

Well buses & trains don't run in my town, so driving is the ONLY option, and to be honest not many people bought it with playing it at home in mind.

Good for us though- much cheaper than buying 2 platforms.

The Switch as just merged Nintendos handheld and console sales into one piece of hardware, overall I'm not sure how much market share they have gained if any at all.

Good to see it doing well in different territories, that's now 10+ million in Europe, 10+ in Japan as well as the 15+ in North America.

Likely to surpass the Wii as Nintendo's best selling console in the end.

You would expect if they merged two sets of hardware, the sales numbers would be decreased overall not doubled. I'm not sure if that's what you mean you would expect more because of that.

Just bought a Switch this weekend. Honestly, this is kind of shocking because a year ago I didn't have any interest in it. PS4 is still my favorite system, but this is a fantastic compliment. Playing Fire Emblem Three Houses atm.

They should stay in this lane. Creating a hand held that can connect to TVs was a great idea. Plus their back catalog is massive. Nintendo could technically have Gameboy, N64, Gameboy Advance and GameCube games running on the Switch. Add a browser and Netflix and you have the total package.

That is a very bold prediction. How will Nintendo answer the PlayStation & Xbox systems of generation 9? The Switch will need to be replaced by 2022 at the minimum. It would be awesome to see Nintendo do those numbers, but can they?

And SMOKING the PS4 in Japan by substantially more. PS4 is toast. Switch is in it to win it.

It's selling better than the PS4 did in Europe during the same time frame sadly. And the Switch passed the PS4 in Japan. In just two years vs. 6 years. As of this year, the Switch is outselling the PS4 Worldwide during the exact same time frame.

Looks like the Switch Lite will continue those sales trends.

That is a very bold prediction. How will Nintendo answer the PlayStation & Xbox systems of generation 9? The Switch will need to be replaced by 2022 at the minimum. It would be awesome to see Nintendo do those numbers, but can they?

Well I imagine the quality of the library and its portability feature will keep the Switch momentum going strong into the 2020's. Sure, it won't be able to compete with the power of the new systems, and likely will not get a lot of third-party titles which come out next gen. Then again, that's fairly typical of a Nintendo console.

Considering that the Nintendo first-party stuff is never usually too graphically intensive, I feel like they can continue to make system seller games with nice looking artstyles for many years. It helps too that they've been able to differentiate their product from the other companies', with many people deciding to pick up a Switch as a secondary console rather than choosing between it and say a Playstation or Xbox. Doesn't feel like it's in direct competition in the same way as the Wii was with either the PS3 or Xbox 360.

Perhaps they will release a more powerful model in 2022 similar to what Sony and Xbox did with their mid gen refreshes this time around, but I don't see them bringing out a new platform anytime soon. I'm sure I read somewhere that Nintendo stated that they planned to focus on the Switch for a long time, probably at least 7 years.

I could be wrong about the Switch overtaking the Wii eventually, but that's just my prediction. :)
