"Stephen Totilo, Kotaku: I can’t ask you what’s going on with Pikmin, because you’ve answered that for the last couple of years in a row. I can’t ask you what’s going on with Star Fox, because you answered that this year. So… what is going on with Metroid? [everyone laughs] Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo: The original creators of Metroid and the director who was the director of the Metroid Prime games who worked under me when I was producing those both now work for Mr. Takahashi, so you’ll have to ask him. Shinya Takahashi, Nintendo: So it has been a while since we released the last one and we’re having discussions internally about what we can do next. So at this point we have two different types of Metroid games. We have the Prime style of Metroid game and we have the more traditional style of Metroid game. We feel that we do need to take care of both of these styles of play. And the hope is that at some point in the near future we’ll be able to share something about them. Bill Trinen, Nintendo — who had been translating for our interview: Mr. Miyamoto was prompting him to say, ‘Which of these two styles do you like best?’ Totilo: It’s been so long that I miss both of them. They’re both great, but it’s been a long time. The [2D] Metroid people don’t really much anymore. The only one like that recently was a Batman game made for the 3DS and the Vita that was created by some guys who used to be at Retro. So I miss that style of game. As for Metroid Prime, nobody at all makes anything like that. So in other words, if you don’t do it, no one will. Miyamoto: This falls into your question before of remaking the same franchises. Totilo: I’ll get back to that in a second, but which of the two styles do you guys like better? The 2D or Metroid Prime? Takahashi: I like them both. They both have a different style of appeal. Miyamoto: I have the New Super Mario Bros. series [for 2D], so I like Prime. I think there’s still a lot of new things that could be done with the Prime series."

Reveal will be next E3 along with F-Zero I'm hoping. I can hope right? The Wii U is shaping up to be the GC of this generation and I'm perfectly okay with that.

I'm a huge metroid fan I grew up with the first on the NES and Super Metroid. I love the 2d games they are some of the best experiences in gaming I've ever had. At first I didn't like the Prime games because to me they didn't feel like Metroid. As the years go by I've grown an appreciation for the Prime games. The more I play them the more I like them. Now that I've gotten past the 2d to 3d jump for the series the Prime games are incredible. I have a few hundred games to choose from and I always go back and play Trilogy once a year. I can't wait for more Metroid. I love Zelda and Mario but Metroid is my favorite Nintendo franchise.

I don't understand the hype behind these type of statements. It's cool that they're acknowledging these games, but when should we expect to buy them? 2016? 2017? Sorry, but that's way too far away for me to care about now. Same deal with Star Fox as well (and no, it's not coming out next year).

Glad to hear they haven't completely forgotten it, but it sounds as though we're still a couple of years away from a new game in the series.

How about in the meantime they port Prime Trilogy to the Wii U with updated dual analog controls?

Nintendo did an amazing job pretty much by themselves this E3. I heard that Nintendo were planning on giving other IPs to other devs. I hope so, because they can't do everything themselves, even though they pull out more first party than anyone else.

I mean I agree but only because I love Metroid that much. Those games are nothing alike and shouldnt be compared as games.

Now all we need is a Pilot Wings confirmation and it'll be safe to say Nintendo is giving its fans everything they want

And Waverace and 1080 Snowboarding and Mother 3 and Kid Icaurus and Fire Emblem and Mario RPG and a proper 3D Mario and Animal Crossing and tons of other Nintendo IP's that I would love to see back, but this is a start I guess. haha

What they need to do is create relationships with indie developers. Allow them to make their own games, and pick and choose those really talented ones. Help nurture those developers and allow them to use some of their IP's in new and creative ways.

This E3 at least tells us that Nintendo is actually trying. Like I said, I heard more than once that Nintendo is handing over IPs to others. Is it the best step? No. But its in the right direction IMO. ( IMO- Nintendo is too busy to actually care much about indies. Indie devs. aren't good enough for Nintendo, they polish the hell out of everything before release.)

All I need now is a new F-Zero game and confirmation that Captain Falcon is in Smash Bros.

But that's precisely the reason why they need to pay attention to these guys. Imagine if No Man's Sky was exclusive to Wii U. That game was mighty impressive and Nintendo needs to continue this progressive attitude towards development because they can't do it alone.

My biggest problem with Nintendo in the last couple years is their lack of respect for the Metroid Prime series and just how good it was.

People don't really much............what?? Kind of missing the meat of that sentence there. I suspect the missing word that would fit given 2D Metroid's absense for all these years is "want", "care" or "buy". And any of those don't quite give me the confidence we're going to be seeing another 2D Metroid soon, if at all. I'd like to believe different but my hope for this franchise is completely in the gutter. 2D or 3D.

I never enjoyed Metroid or the metroidvania style games. Just not my cup of tea. Never has been. The endless backtracking...who finds that fun? Not I dear sirs. Not I.

That's one of the best things about Metroid. During your play you constantly stumble into things you can't reach or can't yet solve, and then later you get an upgrade and have to recollect in which places the upgrade could help you advance.

An HD Metroid in the style of Prime would be amazing. Retro and their technical voodoo pulled some incredible visuals on the Gamecube that complemented gameplay quite well. I can only imagine what they might be able to achieve with Wii U level hardware.

Metroid 3DS to be 2(.5)D

Metroid WiiU will be Prime 4.

A first person Metroid game on a handheld would be gross.

On the flip side Metroid Prime getting the kind of tlc the new Zelda is getting+a 2D metroid with 1080p, hand-drawn sprites(eh, they would probably go the DKR territory if anything with the 2d game) would be glorious.

I didn't want them to return to Prime's style, but if they think the can keep it evolving, I'm down. I've been hoping they'd split the series into 2 dimensions for a while too; 3D and 2D Metroid games feel very different as far as gameplay goes.

Also, ReadingRainbow, Open-world Metroid is a terrible idea.

So I say there are just these games that would have made it perfect, and then they pretty much announce every one of those afterwards by accident or otherwise :D
