  • While being always online is not necessary, a network connection is important to fully enjoy the features of the PS4.
  • The PS4 will initially act as a stand-alone web server for the PlayStation App. In the future theres the possibility of this to be expanded through the cloud, with the PS4 and PlayStation App interacting through the cloud, allowing cooperative play between multiple players.
  • The secondary chip for ultra-low power operation will mostly activate at night from 1 to 4 AM and download any required update automatically. It will also activate when software is purchased through external means like the PlayStation App.
  • Power consumption will vary greatly depending on the performance of the game played.
  • The noise level of the console during operation is generally much smaller than it was on the PS3.
  • The PS4s cooling fan has a low noise level and stepless speed control (meaning that it will increase its speed to match heat smoothly and not in sudden steps like the one on the PS3).
  • Since the Blu-Ray player is 6x instead of 2x in speed (like the one on the PS3 was) the initial spinning noise is actually louder, but that will be countered by using the hard disk drive.
  • The Audio/Video performance (for movies and music) of the PS4 will target PS3 levels at launch, but will be improved through updates, for instance with the addition of 4K, as Sony is also an Audio/Video company.
  • The theme of the PS4 is Personalization, meaning that it will offer an experience tailored to each individual.

I like that it has a lower noise operation than the PS3.

The 360, and PS3 are honestly loud, when under full load.

So it's smaller than the X1, yet it has an internal psu which the X1 does not. But it still runs really cool, and it's also very quiet? Amazing.

My 360 sounds like a vacuum cleaner and my PS3 phat sounds like a mid '00s laptop. If they can get quieter than a laptop then I'm all for it.

Wow. This is like, zero actual informaiton.

"It's quieter". Says who? By how much?  how about a decibel chart based on load? THAT would actually be useful.

"The power pull varies". Not shit.  How about a chart of idle, slepe mode and on load? THAT would actually be useful.

"We'll improve stuff"..That's nice. What, how, when?

If this means you still need to update psn like once a week then f*ck that  is that what theyre saying?

How many timea do you need to update XBL? like twice a year?

You don't actively update PSN, it updates itself once a week. Also, all pretty sweet info, though has no real impact on anything.

The Audio/Video performance (for movies and music) of the PS4 will target PS3 levels at launch, but will be improved through updates, for instance with the addition of 4K, as Sony is also an Audio/Video company. The noise level of the console during operation is generally much smaller than it was on the PS3. Very vague if you ask me. New Xbox One to be 4 times quieter than its predecessor. http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/21/hands-on-with-xbox-one/ Personally I'd rather have a bigger quieter box.

Yeah, that's true. It would be nice to have some real facts, all of which are easily obtainable. Do a sound test to see the decibel levels when it's under load and idle. Check the watt usage when it's idle and under load. Alll of these things are done commonly by youtube tech guys with nowhere near the budget of a company like Sony.

I am also a little surprised to hear there's fans on the PS4 as it looked like it relied on passive cooling. Good to hear though--let's just hope they're not small fans, as small fans are annoying as hell.

To be fair, it's obviously meant for the mainstream consumer, who rarely (never) reads chart-heavy articles.

I enjoy my in-depth GPU reviews as much as the next bloke, but we probably were'nt the target recipients.

Sony is truly an amazing hardware company. A smaller box than the xbone AND an internal power supply unit, with minimum/no noise.

I will wait to see if any hardware problems arise but Sony usually has a very low failure rate so i doubt that many YLOD incidents will occur.

Yes, my PS3 Slim is much louder then my XBox 360. AT times it gets louder then the original PS3. The XB1 will be quieter then both of those systems.
