Sony's 1st party was basically non-existent till the PS3

Sorry, but I don't agree with that statement. The PS1 and especially the PS2 had an amazing 1st party and I think it's just indicative of age or where you were in your gaming life that would lead you to believe that their 1st party was non-existent until the PS3. Basically, I just don't think you were paying much attention to their 1st party in those eras. Here's an example of some high quality games from their 1st party (only PS2/PS1 era games):

  1. Twisted Metal 1/2,
  2. Gran Turismo 1-4,
  3. Twisted Metal: Black,
  4. Primal
  5. Mark of the Kri,
  6. Sly Cooper 1-3 series,
  7. Jak & Daxter 1-3
  8. Jak X,
  9. Parappa 1/2,
  10. Rogue Galaxy,
  11. Intelligent Cube,
  12. Wild Arms 1-5,
  13. Ratchet and Clank (4 games on PS2),
  14. Crash Bandicoot (PS1 era),
  15. Spyro the Dragon (PS1 era),
  16. Legend of Legaia 1/2,
  17. Dark Cloud 1-2,
  18. Champions of Norrath 1/2,
  19. Arc the Lad series,
  20. Hot Shots Golf Series,
  21. MediEvil series,
  22. ICO,
  23. Shadow of the Colossus,
  24. Drakan: The Ancients' Gates,
  25. Amplitude,
  26. Frequency,
  27. ATV Offroad Fury Series,
  28. Jet Moto Series,
  29. SOCOM PS2 series,
  30. Ghost Hunter,
  31. Destruction Derby Series,
  32. Syphon Filter series,
  33. War of the MONSTERS!,
  34. God of War 1/2,
  35. Rise of the Kasai,
  36. Tourist Trophy,
  37. Genji: Dawn of the Samurai
  38. Siren 1/2,
  39. Mr. Mosquito,
  40. Formula 1,
  41. MLB The Show,
  42. Legend of Dragoon,
  43. Singstar,
  44. and many more.
  45. I skipped over games I didn't care for like Fantavision, Okage, or The Getaway but they exist too.

Sony's 1st party was VERY "existent", in fact, it was pretty awesome and only improved over the years. I loved Dark Cloud 2 and spent hours upon hours with Champions of Norrath 1/2 both online and locally with friends. Jak & Daxter was great. Sly Cooper, Ratchet & Clank, Rogue Galaxy, Twisted Metal: Black, Legend of Dragoon, War of the Monsters, Singstar, God of War 1/2...some great Sony 1st Party games and all existed before the PS3. I would also argue for Gran Turismo 1-4, but I'm not into racing, although I can't deny the series was a critical and consumer darling when it came out in the PS1 era.

I would certainly argue that that they improved over the years, but the PS2 was where I noticed as a gamer in that era how strong and relevant their 1st party was. I wasn't sure if the PS1 was a fluke, but the PS2 solidified Sony as a contender in the 1st party space...and I was a Xbox and Gamecube gamer which really spoke volumes to me how good some of those PS2 1st party games were.

It was sad to see Sony not utilize Psygnosis's talents. I blame it on the Formula 1 games. They're hella niche and Psygnosis / SCE Liverpool made like 13 of them. Not sure if it was the studios decision to pursue those or Sony's. Either way, that's what killed it.

Meh I've been playing since the 8-bit era in the 80s and from my gaming experience I think gaming is only getting better despite what others are saying (people wearing nostalgia goggles).

That said, I can't wait what the 1st party devs such as Naughty Dog has in store for this generation!

I guess Microsoft 1st party must be dog shit level then? Bungie is gone they were the only great studio along with Turn 10(I guess don't play racers). Just about any halfway decent studio can ride Halo's coattails and 343 is very suspect IMO. Same for Gears Of War being handed to any unproven studio in Black Tusk.

Sony has big titles like Gran Turismo, Uncharted, God of War, Little Big Planet and now the The Last Of Us. They also has studios than turn out lots of good games that appeal different demographics like in all different genres. I think Sony has the most diverse 1st party by far. Nintendo continues to milk the same IPs and Microsoft has little interest in even investing in new studios.

As of right now Media Molecule, Sony Bend, Sony Japan, Sony London, Guerrilla Games, Quantic Dream(2nd party) and Ready At Dawn(2nd) are all working on new IPs or least titles that were not around last gen. Sony's first party is its biggest strength because they can't compete with Microsoft in buying 3rd party exclusives.

Ok, then compare it to the competition.

Xbox's first-party is pathetic and Nintendo rarerly dares to launch a new IP, instead they milk Mario and co to death.

Doesn't change the fact that a lot of studios are gone or became worse though but still PS has the best first-party out of the three imo.

Hard to develop unique and risky games with the bigger company really struggling. They will play safe and release what makes money until they back on track.

I / we can also add Creative Assembly (Total War), Realtime Worlds (Crackdown), Team17 (Worms, Alien Breed), Bizarre Creations (PGR!!!) and countless others, and let's not even start on how relevant they used to be in the C64 / Amiga era...

It's largely mediocre. But the getaway guys wouldn't have changed that. Saying that game was mediocre is being very polite to that game.

the last time I was ever into Sony's first party was the PS1 era with Crash 2, the Spyro PS1 trilogy, and the twisted Metal series, and maybe some other stuff I'm forgetting. For whatever reason I never got much into Sony's first party efforts on the PS2 outside of Twisted Metal Black and some Crash game; my PS2 was basically a third party machine (which it worked nicely as). Never even bought a PS3 last gen so that just made me miss out on even more first party stuff.

perhaps when I get a PS4 I will try to get into it more into Sony's first party (considering alot of it is sequels though I guess I would have to hope PSN has alot of first party stuff from previous gens to allow me to catch up). I am certainly interested in trying the Last of Us Remastered.

Didn't someone from Naughty Dog leave Naughty Dog recently, so yeah, Sony first party are a joke nowadays and relies on pure hype and quantity of titles rather than quality.

True, after all SONY is synonymous with world class gaming.

After playing TLOU and beating it a few days ago I can say it's pretty good a tad bit overrated though.

You are as much entitled to such an opinion as I am to mine, and by the way I did state beforehand that it is nothing more but my opinion. However, I have a slight suspicion that if you trivialize this thread and shrug it off as being merely a "bad one" then I think that you're being ignorant about the history of video games as a whole.
