These are the games that almost made me forget that I'm playing a video game. Instead, in some of them, I became a part of another world which was hard to leave. Some of them made me feel like I'm inside a real life simulation or a nightmare.

Atmosphere and giving players full control is the key.

Dying light in my case. There is Outlast too. Ho yea and also Amnesia: Machine for pigs.

I'm not sure how a game that is not horror could be immersive? Maybe we're not talking about the same concept.

Nice choices. Actually any game can be immersive but in the case of Horror games, its atmosphere helps greatly, since it plays key role in making it scary and devs pay more attention to it, which brings entire game to life. You feel like you are inside a nightmare or something.

Shenmue. It might be very old now, but it still remains one of the best examples of a living, breathing world in gaming.

Alan Wake? I like the game (it's okay), but that game is jarring as shit when it goes out of its way to telegraph enemies are near by, and then of course pans out to show you exactly where they are.

Anyway Metroid Prime, Shadow of Chernobyl, Amnesia and Penumbra, Silent Hill 1-3, Resident Evil Remake, Shadow of the Colossus, Ico, The Souls games, Bloodborne, Bioshock, quite a few actually. The original Assassin's Creed for instance was carried by its immersion.

The one and only

Everything is player based. From the start it is all discovery. A reason for the camera existing within the world is given and thats about it.

The player must learn what the game is about--controls, level navigation, what is possible with said controls, what the goals are, and even the story is player based.

a few good games have made me forget i need sleep and food
, just off the top of my head these come to mind

-Morrowind,Oblivion and Skyrim, i can just wander for hours in these games and have no cares for the real world

-souls games , the urge to level up just once more or keep grinding for certain drops is always present

-Final Fantasy 12 my GOAT of the series, loved everything about it i cant think of anything i thought was negative about it, this is a remake id love to see happen

-gran turismo- i found it very addicting and rewarding

-madden, yes its ea sports but its the only NFL game there is. love to play it online

-chrome hounds and armored core, Mech games are totally addicting to me and From Software really knows how to deliver a great product over and over. Chrome hounds needs a sequel or a remake. AC6 i hope is only next gen only so it fully uses the power available

-Civilization (firaxis games) and Sims/city - self explanatory

- Last but not least at all

STEEL BATTALION

whats more immersive than a game with a 40 button controller thats basically a vertical tank (mech) simulator. the original was way before its time, had so many options to choose for a mech, a persistant online war, rewards of rare parts for doing well. too bad xbox gimped it by removing the dash test from the OGXBOX, was designed to be 5v5 but after it could only handle 3v3. it was still the biggest thrill ive ever had online. duping destroyed the economy but at least everyone traded duped parts to balance it out. had a great dedicated community , you could hate other teams but in the lobby it was all chill and veterans would even give out tips and strategies. can only hope there will ever be another game like it besides the abortion made for the kinect.

Clive Barker's:Undying was a great horror themed shooter on PC. It's not only a shooter but it's one of the best immersive horror games ever. After nearly 14 years, this game is really UNDYING in true sense.

A list about immersion without Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines is incomplete.

Ellie never disrupted gameplay for me. Granted I didn't run around areas back and forth causing her to run in clear view of enemies.

MGS3 pulled me into the world more than most games. Which is impressive considering it's just a series of mostly small rooms dressed up as a jungle in a very linear path. They really nailed it though. Lots of variation in terrain, flora and fauna. Really great job on the ambient sounds. Convincing sky boxes at the time, and though they weren't dynamic, the weather and time of day changes really helped to sell it all. Just so much attention to detail helping to pull it all together. All of this amplified by the fact that it was a very slow paced game. A lot of crawling and laying prone, watching guard paths and making calculated moves from one safe spot to the next. Plenty of good interaction with the environment as well. I think the one spot in the game that brought it together best was the fight with The End. When it would go from sunlight peaking in through the canopy, to rain pouring down and then the steam rising in the jungle after the rain subsides. And all the while your senses are heightened, listening for different sounds, looking out for anything that moves, watching your back so he doesn't get the jump on you. Cliff sides, dense jungle, waterfalls. Really cool shit.

Lots of other great immersive games out there as well though. I definitely dig stuff like Metroid Prime, Ico, SotC, Souls games, SotN, FFX. I also remember OoT really pulling me in at the time, don't know if it would have the same affect today though.

I found Super Metroid, Symphony of the Night and A Link to the Past to be fairly immersive. I'd even say that games like FFVI and Chrono Trigger pulled it off very well. Though to be fair these are all sprawling 2d games compared to a typical side scroller, or games with level based progression.

I never gave it any thought before, but I guess it's just easier for a 3d world to sell you on the idea that you're in the game.

Yes I agree. I wonder then if after VR is 'everywhere' if these 3D immersive games will look like 2D games do now.

Probably so. I finally got to give the Oculus a spin about a month back and I was floored. I didn't try any games, just panoramic videos and parallax renders. I was so impressed though, I couldn't wipe the smile off my face.

A lot of people are under the impression that VR is just some gimmick that will run its course, but I doubt these people have actually tried it. It's going to make a big splash in the coming years. Give it about 10 years and kids are going to wonder how we ever spent so much time staring at flat light boxes to enjoy our games.

Metroid Prime, STALKER, Another World, Zelda: Wind Waker, Thief: Deadly Shadows.. off the top of my head.
