Molyneux says Kinect is an unnecessary addon

Even though I'm not a huge fan of Kinect either, I simply can't shake the feeling of what a hypocritical asshole this man is:

The British game designer, who left his role as creative director of European studios for Microsoft Games Studios in early 2012 to form Godus maker 22 Cans, said Kinect "feels like an unnecessary add-on to me".

"They could cost-reduce it [by removing Kinect]," Molyneux added. "I'm sure they're going to release an Xbox One without Kinect. It would be unthinkable that they wouldn't."

Now can you remember when the same man worshiped Kinect for 360, using a clearly staged demo called Milo, which never got released btw.

What's hypocritical about that? You can like something and still see it as an unnecessary add on, I like onion rings, but if McDonalds started including them in every meal and bumped the price up I'd still think it was a dumb move.

It would make the developers use Kinect less? Is that even possible? It's barely used now and when it is the results have been awful.

The only people that claim that think Kinect is a valuable addition to the Xbox One are the poor souls that were forced to buy one already. The don't want to imagine a future Xbox One SKU that costs a $100 less and doesn't come chained down with a useless peripheral.

It isn't necessary and doesn't have a killer app, and it's absence would surely increase sales for people like us, but if it weren't in every box, it would limit the appeal of the non-gamer crowd, which may end up being a significant slice of the pie.

Agreed. He has his own company now and its all about revenue and profit at that point. He has, as we all have, his opinions on how a multi billion dollar corporation should offer products. I don't see the Kinect as "necessary" per se, but I would have eventually bought it anyway as I did last gen. I have family that I have quality time using it with and that to me is priceless.

If MS drop Kinect as part of the package, I'm becoming a PC only gamer next gen. It's the ultimate betrayal.

3 reasons.

1. This was MSs vision of the X1 and if MS separate Kinect, it means they can't stick through with their vision and make it work. It's the worst 180. So far the 180s have only been things we don't want anyway like DRM.

2. Devs won't work with it to any significant degree if they separate the markets.

3. It means the X1 is weaker for nothing.

It's a central part of the Xbone experience. The whole point of the machine is that it's a voice-controller media hub.

It would be a dumb move to make the Kinect optional, what they need to do is make stuff for it that isn't shit and work on getting the existing features ready for consumers (the markets you are selling the bloody thing in).

Peter has a point, this is being aimed at the US only. Selling something heavily marketed at controlling your TV then have it not support any of the Sat/Cable providers is a bit retarded. And I dread to think how bad the speech recognition will be for the countries it hasn't been released in yet.

You know what else would allow you to to control the Xbox One with your voice? A $5 microphone.

Now that he's left Microsoft he can say what he truly thinks about the Kinect. Sure he could of used it to good use with Project Milo, but as a business decision he obviously thinks the Kinect isn't necessary.

He is only a half year late with that info. Anybody with a fraction of a brain cell knew this from the start.

Wait, so i'm confused, does this mean Kinect is now actually the most important add-on in the history of gaming, or is Molyneux right? Neither of these sits right with me.

The Kinect is a waste of time and effort, but it is leaps and bounds better then anything this doof has made since the release of the Kinect.

And? What about all the other stuff the Kinect sensor offers? Cameras, face-sensing tech, etc? What $5 solution do you have for those?

They would if it was actually logical. Voice commands have been used in games before Kinect even existed. Tom Clancys Endwar is just one example.

Kinect is alright. It can be fun with friends and there are some good family games for it, it also has some cool tech behind it. But it's really nothing special, it really has had zero effect on my overall gaming experience. Many of it's applications feel like cheap gimmicks. If offered, I would take a controller over Kinect anyday.

I find it bizarre and a bit hypocritical for Molyneux to be dissing on Kinect now all of a sudden. Considering that he was one of the early cheerleaders for the device.

Why does he have reason to say lie? He was the one who left M$; he wasn't fired. He was probably forced to create Fable The Journey because M$ needed some big names backing the peripheral. After all, who is better to comment on the Kinect than someone who has made games using it and not using it.

This sounds like honest opinion, not the old garbage that he was paid to say.
