That looks really.... weird. I lik ethe idea, but colorful mario in realistic shaded levels just looks weird. I didn't care for the cell shaded area though so I guess the realistic looks better. Kudos to the creator of this though. I can't believe Nintendo isn't all over this yet.
No one plays a Nintendo game for the graphics.
I don't play Nintendo games anymore period, but you know, when I did back in the 90's Nintendo games had awesome graphics. Ocarina of Time pretty much blew me away in not just how good it looked, but how open it was and how you could just ride around and find all sorts of unique stuff everywhere.
Seeing cartoony mario against a realistic backdrop is awkward as hell
Mario kart 8 is closer to how an ideal HD mario should look like
Mario running down hallways and tight corridors isn't what the series is about. I don't care how good they can make it look, Mario in a Gears of War or The Order 1886 type of restriction isn't good for anyone.
On a side note, Mario Maker will be a top 5 game this year. Mark my words.

i did, well, at least back in the day nintendo could claim graphics king
Counting PC? Not even close.
just like today, some PS4 fanboys can claim graphics king, but we all know its not
What's this? It's the same old Mario, just in a Killzone stage or something lol.
I don't see how this is impressive at all.
Mario Galaxy visually looks better than this.
yeah, that 480p resolution graphics king
this topic is from a mario fan (older fan than most here) sort of demanding nintendo to do better, but todays mario fan seem not to like it,
if nintendo knows its public, NX will probably be inferior to Xbox one

You sure? 1996 was a different time. Just out of curiosity, what was the best looking game of 96?
as a N64 fanboy i can say that probably a N64 game running on PC, like duke nuken 3d

This. I don't want cinematic eye candy Mario.

My friend, using a highly stylized character against a gritty, high tech background is bad art direction. Atheistically, a good artist strives for unification. This has no unification, therefor, like a bad fakefactory Halflife 2 mod, it is aesthetically ugly regardless of how hard you attempt to sell it.
When a game, or a cartoon, or a drawing, is highly stylized, technical prowess becomes increasingly irrelevant.
Super Mario 3D World is far more visually appealing than that. It's among the prettiest games out there right now despite the hardware.
This video only reinforces why I am so glad Mario is in the hands of the master level designers over at Nintendo. All the pixels in the world can not make that trash TC linked any fun to play.
Anyone who watches this and says it looks better than any Mario game, is honestly just trolling.
He just grabbed assets from some mario game and put them inside unreal engine 4's pre-made tech demo maps with minimal effort. This is nothing.

Now thats that HD Mario weve been looking for. This detail, these graphics, its simply amazing. I can see the red on the side of his eyeball. I can count the hairs above his lips and head. And that beard, i can tell Mario forgot to shave in the morning, so cool. Nintendo, where you at, put this detail into Smash Bros. The kids and parents are gonna love this, they will be lining up in lines wrapping across the store. Kids will be hanging this dudes picture above their bedrooms. Also can you imagine how many toys we gonna sell. HD Mario is better then i could ever dream. Nintendo better hurry up, we need this to sell the Wii U.

That Mario looks like something from a nightmare and will most likely scare small children.

well, at least some people will get best looking version of their childhood games
@leandrro: Sorry, i dont buy movie games. Last good movie game i played was Aladdin on Sega Genesis, never again, never again.

LOL that was terrible, never even wanted to play that, while everyone around me was like WOW!!!! THIS IS THE FUTURE!!!

In 1996, both the PC and N64 looked like complete jokes compared to the Sega Model 3 arcade system:
Virtua Fighter 3
Scud Race

Ratchet and Clank is awesome mate, i shouldnt have put them in the same category as movie games. Its true that most movie games suck, but Ratchet and Clank is different. I hope the Ratchet and Clank reboot is successful.
the demo didnt work (mario looks badly out of place and that cell shaded portion was just all kinds of wrong) but i take the TCs point. i would be interested to see what nintendos artists would do with the latest tech. there are actually some practical benefits to it also (the reflections on the surfaces would make it that bit easier to judge the jumps and position. shadows can be a bit innacurate).
this is probably going to sound strange but i prefer galaxies visuals to mario on the wiiu (from an end product point fo view. of course mario on the wiiu is a lot more technically advanced). i dont know what it is but something is off with the visuals in that game. maybe the upgraded lighting has inadvertently backfired :S. i would take an upressed galaxy with AA applied over mario world to be honest.
its hard to visualise just how mario visuals would be upgraded though and the tech demo is a stark reminder of the problem.
now...someone do it with zelda...that would be a different story.

Have you played Goldeneye 64?
The whole thing is messed up. Nintendo would be foolish to do anything along these lines. What they did with Mario Galaxy? That was spectacular. Release that in HD with some improved textures and lighting effects, and you got the quintessential Mario game.
@GameboyTroy: I forgot about that one, ive played it at a friends, ive never owned it though, i never had 64. Also Lion King on Sega Genesis was good.

I agree with that.
This just doesn't fit. Although I said this in the Nintendo forum, I do enjoy the clarity of this video.
Although Mario looks a little better I expected a lot more difference. AND the background dont really work with Mario. They should have use a more MarioISH design ..
People don't get the point. Imagine that graphical fidelity, but in Mario-style-level-design and such. "That doesn't look fun to play!", well no shit, it's just some random environments to show off the Unreal 4 engine. Although I don't really know if Mario gained anything if it looked like that hmmmm... the horsepower could be used to make some other aspects of the game bigger.
