Future and past games, seems like. Source.

"We are also happy with our efforts to provide our IP to PCs, although it is still in its infancy, and we look forward to working with Nixxes to help with that." - Jim Ryan

Guess I'm really not getting a PS5 after all.

Wonder if Sony will ever introduce a 'play anywhere' option to save people having to purchase the game twice.

Honestly, depending on what games go to PC and how long new ones stay exclusive to PS consoles... I think Jim needs to be replaced.

@Pedro: I remember people denying it and making up excuses for what they had bought them lmao.

The thing is, all these news have been wonderful for gamers but awful for Sony fanboys

Why, though? Because he's thinking like a businessman and not a fanboy?

@gym_lion: considering the way PS have handled cross gen games I think a play anywhere feature is unlikely.

Not if you don't want to pay through the nose for a PC they're not. A decent PC over here will set you back about £2000. No way I'm paying that.

@jasonofa36: Because if Playstation games come to PC even within a year of their PS release... there's little point to owning a Playstation console. It's the same argument that was brought up when Xbox started down this road. The console becomes pointless if the games are released on everything. Jim is essentially putting a hole in and sinking the Playstation console business in order to become the next EA or Ubisoft.

Nah. Not everyone wants to play on a PC, and not everyone wants to play on a console. MS and Sony just trying to expand their markets. Both consoles/company aren't going anywhere if they make their games multiplat.

You are forgetting that consoles exist because not everyone wants to invest in PC gaming at all and consoles still have their place after all and PS5 will be just fine even if it means PS5 exclusives will come to PC. At the end of the day, it's clear console exclusives aren't the driving force as it once was, and trust me, PC gamers are more forgiving than console games when it comes to buying games.

As for the thread, seeing Sony buying Nixxes was obviously so they can help with porting Sony games onto PC and for a business, Jim Ryan is, it's about time he's thinking outside the box.

Nice! It's nothing against the PS5, mind you, but if I can avoid buying one to play then of course I'll be happy - and people still clinging to the idea that Sony needs to sell consoles to make good games or be profitable... that's bull. They can sell consoles for those who want them/prefer playing on them. But as has been said over and over and over again on here, console hardware isn't the big money maker. Software, services, and peripherals. Chances are they will make more money and be able to fund more "bangers" if they open up

Well, yeah. That's what Nixxes are best known for. Sure, they could also be doing an Aspyr and getting investment to do their own thing, but acquiring them exclusively for that would be a bit of a waste of their expertise, considering Sony's new direction.

Might also be timely too, because I think the age of specialist porting houses are coming to an end. Both PlayStation and Xbox are now x86-based systems, and there is now a wealth of cross-platform engines and middleware. It's therefore easier than ever to make in-house ports, porting to Switch aside. Only Sony haven't really set up their in-house code base to do this, so Nixxes are coming in to help, which should be pretty straightforward for them.

If people want to play their games on console, they will get a PS5. That doesn't change. Forcing people to buy a console they have no interest in just so they can have access to games is very anti-consumer. Opening up their games to PC gamers expands their audience and is the right thing to do.

Hmm. the delay in getting my PS5 could be a blessing in disguise. Nixxes also know their stuff so hopefully that will really improve their PC versions going forward (Horizon still isnt 100%. its better than launch and generally ion good shape now but they messed up their handling of shader compilation. if anything thats worse than the launch implementation.)

GT7 in VR on PC, followed by some more GT7 on a flatscreen after the joypuke....FOLLOWED by GT7 on the toilet..... what an age we could potentially live in.

come on nintendo....do it.....doooooo it (fat chance, i know).

@Pedro: I think you're ignoring what you know about me based on previous discussions in here.

The entire point of having systems is to play the games on them that you can't play elsewhere. If you wanted to play Mario, you had to have Nintendo. If you wanted Sonic (back in the day) you had to have Sega. If you wanted Uncharted, you had to have a Playstation. If you wanted Halo, you had to have an Xbox...

For the longest time, this is how it was. So aside from Nintendo... now all games go to PC. So I ask again... with Playstation taking this path... WTF is the point of buying a PS5 to those that have a capable PC? There is no point.

Sure there is a point - for those who don't want a PC. Which lots of people don't. Or maybe you want a console under the TV anyway.

Your argument comes off as "if someone else can play the game on their system then I don't want to buy my system at all"

  • If you have a PC - you could forego getting a PS5, saving yourself some money.
  • If you have a PC - you could buy a PS5 anyway because you want one/something under your TV
  • If you don't have a PC or PS5 - you could choose between a PC or PS5
  • If you don't have a PC and don't want anything to do with a PC - you could buy a PS5

Explain to me how any of the above hurts anyone?

The games are what matter and the quality of the experience. People playing a Sony game on PC does not affect your ability to play it on PS5. If you want to play it on PS5, that is fine. Just know that you will have the inferior version just like lemmings do with MS games.

The entire point of having systems is to play games. That is it. I don't game on a system based whether or not the game is available elsewhere. Xbox Series is doing better than any of their previous consoles despite ALL of their games being available on PC. The same would occur if Sony makes all their games available on PC. The general gaming population don't give a shit if someone else can play the games they are playing and game on whatever device they prefer based on whatever criteria. What would be the point of buying a PS5 for those who have a capable PC and prefer to game on PCs? None. But that doesn't stop the millions of gamers who are not in that category.

EDIT: I pricing PCs at the moment (Origin PCs) and for a machine with 3060Ti, the lowest spec the start price is $2500. 5x the PS5 and Series X. Some of you all on the forum need to understand that this forum is not a reflection of gamers and never have been. Consoles have their market just like PC has it market. The overlap is insignificant and Xbox Series is proof of this.

Consoles used to be very different, fundamentally. The days of consoles being unique is long gone. Everything is an x86 computer now. Overall it's much better because the tools for making games are ubiquitous - which means they are more powerful and have much more documentation.

What you are talking about was sort of the dark ages of gaming from a consumer perspective. I'm not saying the games were bad, they were great. Having to buy a specific system for each game you wanted to play was terrible and I'm glad that's mostly over. You had just as much a chance back then of getting a new console and having it be unsupported and then discontinued within a few years or less. If you were a kid without a job you basically got what you got and missed out on a large portion of gaming.

So yeah.... I remember those times. They were awful.

Thank you Jim Ryan for making sony focus on the PC and the mobile market, Because we already know they already announced that they're going to be putting their PlayStation first-party games on mobile phones. Thanks to Jim Ryan, Nintendo will be the only video game console manufacturer that focuses all of its efforts exclusively on their own consoles. Thank you Jim Ryan for making sony split resources among their Home console and the PC as well mobile devices 🤣

@xantufrog: My point is your first bullet point. There's zero reason for someone with a capable PC to buy a PS5 if they can play the game on their rig. That is a lost hardware sale for Sony. If they feel they can make up the difference of lost hardware sales and thus, market share, with the digital sales of games on PC, then more power to them. I just don't see why they would give up potential market share.

I don't see your second bullet point ever occurring. Why spend the $400-$500?

LOL, don't forget that I was playing older backlog games during that short time with the 1060. So, whether I was playing the games on my old 2080 Ti or current 3080, it wouldn't have mattered. I did not have to compromise on quality. I made the most of the situation.

@Telekill: but the PS5 is sold at a loss - each unit sold actually harms the bottom line. The software, services, and peripheral sales are doing double-duty; their revenue must also offset the hardware.

Selling fewer PS5s should be no problem at all for Sony as long as the same number of software buyers hand over dough (which they must, in this scenario, since your whole premise/concern is that those customers aren't buying a PS5 because they can buy the game they want on PC instead).

With that being said - why do you care? If you want to buy a PS5, bullet points 2-4 must represent you and Sony won't stand in your way.

I am waiting for this. If every game will be available on pc within a year, i send my Playstation good wishes a seeya. Sony titles are good enough to purchase a $500 system for, but if all their games are on pc AND run and look better, then what is the point of spending that $500 and an additional $60 a year for online play.

@xantufrog: I've already got my PS5. I'm trying to look at it from the business side of Market Share. It seems that Sony would lose quite a bit of market share over time. That said, frankly, I don't have any insider info on how Sony operates their Playstation division. They would hopefully have better insight into what the best path is for them.

I will say that should Sony move to a model similar to MS in that day and date releases for their games are on both their hardware and PC... I'm far less inclined to bother buying a PS6.

I will say that should Sony move to a model similar to MS in that day and date releases for their games are on both their hardware and PC... I'm far less inclined to bother buying a PS6.

Because you'd be moving over to PC instead? Otherwise, that's some weird shit my guy.

People gaming on another platform, enjoying the same games you like at the same time, should have zero affect on your experience. If anything, the fanbase expands and it's that much more money Sony can invest in making those games.

But yeah, say tomorrow every PC game ever magically drops on consoles. Wouldn't bother me in the slightest lol. This SW shit shouldn't carry over into real life.

That being said, wouldn't expect day and date releases. At least not early on.

LOL, don't forget that I was playing older backlog games during that short time with the 1060. So, whether I was playing the games on my old 2080 Ti or current 3080, it wouldn't have mattered. I did not have to compromise on quality. I made the most of the situation.

Most.😎

@ConanTheStoner: I buy Playstation every gen as I like Playstation games. If every Playstation game is going to be on PC by the time PS6 comes out but I can also play all the Xbox games on PC... why would I then limit myself? Buy one system and get almost all the games. Especially if Microsoft continues making good choices as they have been.

@Telekill:

Gotcha, yeah that absolutely makes sense then. I thought you were leaning into some other shit, my mistake. Seen others who treat this stuff like a religion and feel "betrayed" lol.
