But why did the Wii U get so much time to prove itself from defenders, all the way up until now with Mario Kart 8 (over one and a half years later), but the PS4 is already going to die in Japan?

We're judging the PS4 by looking at these numbers during it's lowest ebb (launch window) where we can easily see there is clearly not enough PS4 games to interest the Japanese gamers.

But historically games like Kingdom Hearts, Resident Evil, MGS and even Grand Theft Auto have proven to be huge sellers in Japan (GTA V was in their Top 10 of the year). These franchises (with the exception of RE) are not on the Wii U, so couldn't we wait and see when these bigger, proven franchises release over there and then see if PS4 still remains sub 10k? There will also be lots more RPGs and community-driven games. We don't even know but Destiny (or MMO games like them) could be big over there. People kept going on and on about Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3 and SM3DW making big splashes over in Japan - why write off these other games?

I still think the PS4 will do better. It won't be as insanely high as the PS2 (20 million in JPN), or PS3 (10 million) but I should remind people the popular Wii itself was at 12-13 million in JPN.

If the PS4 can so something between 5-7 it won't be the greatest, but not completely dead either. PS3 is still selling and is still found on the charts every week. A truly dead Japanese home console market, completely disregardful of Sony consoles wouldn't even care about the PS3 now, and yet it still charts even today.

Nintendo defenders kept having hope and seeing signs of life for Wii U. But they see signs of death for the PS4 which hasn't even shown the big titles yet.

HMMMMMMM

The PS4 is getting the exact same criticism the WiiU got in Japan at their current ages. There is no preferential treatment. The PS4 is going to outsell the WiiU in the long run by a decent margin but it's gonna sell like shit in Japan comparatively. MGS, RE, GTA, FF are all big series but they won't be hitting the PS4 for a few years and even when they do they will have to be accompanied by a stream of mid tier games to actually be successful. 3DS, PS3 and Vita are stealing most of the mid tier support this gen which is going to make it comparatively harder for the PS4 to grab titles in the mid tier since those games generally aren't designed with western tastes in mind. PS4 is pretty much irrelevant in Japan. Similar to WiiU except it got the benefit of the doubt from Japanese third parties that "eventually" it will be the place to put their games if they want to sell in western territories.

The WiiU has it's own issues which are preventing it from selling in the west. It was designed for a market that doesn't really care about it. Nintendo will rectify this with there new console. The PS4 was designed for the western market and the japanese market last. The console should have been designed for both markets,.Combined with the poor software support so far for the console, the other issue with the ps4 mentioned above and the dying console market there is a chance the ps4 could potentially sell half of the ps3's ltd in Japan. It's not that hard to predict what will happen to any hardware(mostly consoles) that are sold in Japan this gen. The PS4 will make up the decline in terms of ltd in Japan compared to other PS consoles in the west.

Unless NPD shows something different next month, Nintendo will never have a major game to push Wii U sales to the degree it needs. SSB is also on 3DS which will come out a couple months before and Zelda isn't until Holiday 2015 and by then PS4 / X1 will be too far above it. MK8 was Nintendo's ace.

All other systems did as expected.

I don't see Smash doing as well on 3DS (sales wise).

Really? i think SSB 3DS is going to put up some big numbers. It is pretty much the full experience with online, exclusives modes etc... Unless you want to play tournament level or just want to pretty graphics, 3DS seems like a great choice. Not to mention people can just buy a $130 2DS and get right in instead of buying a $300 Wii U.

I think if Nintendo creates a Wii U Smash Bundle where you get a console and the Smash Bundle (game, controller port, gc controller) and advertises it like crazy on tv and the internet it could do great this holiday.

Will Japan get GTA5 on PS4 like America is?

Lol, Japanese console sales are like a drop into the ocean. The market is still shrinking there.

Nobody wins here and especially not Nintendo, since they're failing hard in sales everywhere else.

3DS is alive, that's it.
