Not that it should surprise the well informed gamer but it appears a day one patch is required to activate certain features to include.. Bluray playback and PSN+ features. Without which you won't be able to access.. hmmmm that sounds awfully familiar to another company who received a shit ton of bad press. My question is will Sony receive the same bad press or will gaming journalists simply ignore this..

Either way I must admit this was very well played by Sony. At this point most gamers probably don't care. And if M$ did the same.. they probably would be in a better position publicly.

Is it to just activate (A patch) or do you need to be on-line 24/7?

Issues is that MS got flack for this and it will be ignored on the PS4 because companies like Edge like to flip flop in only one direction.

Microsoft caught shit because they wanted to force you to check in online every 24 hours or else your console would no longer function

Firmware updates come on discs too, which don't require internet.

It appears they did. There's no way to spin this. The PS3 was mainly a Blu-ray player at the start of its lifespan, the PS4 should be expected to play Blu-rays.

No. MS got flack for requiring the console to check in every 24 hours and if it didn't it, it would kick you offline. This is different, its a day one patch to complete the firmware. The WiiU had it and the X1 is also getting one.

I can't speak for the rest of the patch update but the blu ray update is obviously to lock your movies to your region. The consoles will be region free but as always, movies will be locked.

M$ never even mentioned the always online, it was a leak! But because that wasn't Sony's intentions from the beginning there was nothing to be leaked.

If you're next to a retailer or you are waiting for delivery at home, you most likely have online access.

The 24/7 mandatory online is what got so much hate. Shit, even steam doesn't require online to play your games.

@enviouseyezonme: The rest of th patch includes things like share functionality etc. Basically an online patch is required to use online features. Not sure how people are surprised.

The point was that Sony actually stated that if you wanted to get a PS4, and never hook it up to the internet, you could do that.

Microsoft got flack because even after reversing their mandatory online connection, they still require a day one patch (requires internet) to get the console started, and this caused them to receive a ton of flack.

Sony is, however, going against previous statements they've made, and are saying there is a day one patch required.

You can get a PS4 and not be on the net, games will still work and I believe that the update will ship with the games as well.

@clyde46:

The update also activates sharing, remote play, and online multiplayer.. so without this download you would essentially be restricted to playing offline with major features turned off. IF you're allowed to play without the patch. That's something they're being coy about.

1) The X1 requires an online connection to set up, PS4 doesn't.

2) Doesn't that make the X1 still mandatory going off your thread title?

you need online to update but I don't imagine PS+ would be required for system updates

hell, even with my current Samsung blu-ray player I still need online to update the blu-ray player to play certain movies, it wouldn't surprise me if the Blu-ray playback wasn't out of the box funcitonal, and it wouldn't surprise me if the same thing happened to the X1 since it'll have Blu-ray playback

Man, you guys are seriously grasping at straws here. It's pretty pathetic honestly. They clearly stated that you could never connect to the Internet and still be able to "PLAY". How is this a lie dude? It's just an update, just like everything else. And some current blu-ray players need to connect online to play certain movies these days. This isn't Sony fans being hypocritical, this is just a fcking firmware update just like ALL other modern devices have.

Did Sony say it was optional or a requirement? I think they said it was mandatory. So online requirement confirmed.

@thegamer00: Of course it will be considered mandatory if you are using PSN. But in no way will it effect offline single-player. Meaning, you'll still be able to "Play" without ever connecting online... So where is this lie everyone keeps pulling out of their asses?

Some of those features added are just odd. Shouldn't they have included them before the patch. Like bluray playback?

That's only on the PSP, PSVita and 3DS. I've never seen an O/S or apps, feature updates on PS3 or XBox 360 game disks. Sometimes you'll get updates for the game from the PSN or XBL servers when you put a go to play a disk, but that's about it.

I haven't seen any. I've seen game updates. Some games will go to the server and download extra content that didn't make it on the disk originally. Firmware updates are downloaded from servers. Only disks I've seen with firmware updates are PSP, PSVita & 3DS. The game won't even run unless you load the firmware update for those.

These fools keep saying, "We can play the games still." Uuumm, no you won't, because some of those game will require you to access the internet before you can play them. Especially the games that have online multiplayer fuctions like KZ:SF & BF4.

Again.

Install from a game disc

If you haven't connected to Xbox Live in a while, your console software might need updating. If a game disc includes a newer version of the console software than you currently have, the game disc will prompt you to install the update when you start the game.

Note

If you choose to not update your console software, you will be prompted to update the next time you start the game. Some Kinect games require a console software update to work properly.

http://support.xbox.com/en-GB/xbox-360/system-updates/system-updates-info

There's also the option to install from USB for the 30million+ 360s not connected to live.

Also, not being able to play Blu-rays or DVDs without an update is a blatant mandatory requirement for an internet connection - this can't be spun any other way.

1 didn't need to be on 24/7. It needed to check in once every 24 hrs. We all know how that went. Spin anyway you want, Sony said you don't need intwernet for PS4, but to play DVD's, and blu rays you need that or hope the patch is on a game disc. No confirmation whether it is or not. Still not an upfront move, and if it had been MS or Ninty doing it, Cows would be whaling about it.

Lol, I did find it out that through out this whole console generation they wined and moaned about how it was so glorious to play online for free and they would never pay to play multiplayer online but as soon as Sony said it's not mandatory to pay for PSN Premium to play online, they completely forgot their hard nose stance on paying for play. Don't you just love fanboys and they thought process.

I have fibre optic internet at home and every device is connected. Sorry to anyone who still uses a library to post here, I guess you'll need to install it from a disc, lol.
