is it a total western wannabe game series or are there unique japanese elements to it?

Does it matter if it is?charizard1605
it does matter.. people need to stop that whole wester games crap, let's all look at the credits to see how many people from different places in the world help develop the game. The whole western and japanese rpg thing is stupid.. :?

That's what I am trying to say, ultimately it doesn't matter if it's ripping off anything. Dark Souls is such an incredible game, who cares if it decided to be more western tonally?Do your home work before posting idiot threads like this.

From software has been making this type of game since the mid 90's in fact kings field the series that the souls games are the spiritual successor too are older than most western games of the same type.
What? there's not mindless shooting, handholding, online crying children, sex, cliche as **** story.

Yeah, those millions of RPGs that look virtually the same are original, they don't have cliche stories, they don't have a bunch of women shaking their oversized boobs around, and weaboos are known to be very respectful and smart people.
The Souls series is a western rpg so no....
Â
Just because it is made by Japanese doesn't mean it is a JRPG. Derp.
A question built upon the misconception of JRPG/WRPG as genres.
Gxgear
Pretty much. Â WRPG and JRPG refer to essentially two different genres/styles that emerged from western and Japanese developers respectively but are often lumped under the umbrella term of RPG. Â There is nothing precluding Japanese dev from developing a western style RPG just as there is nothing stopping western developer working on a JRPG and there are examples of both. Â
This whole obsession with genres is largely irrelevant anyway - the only question that needs to be asked is if the Souls series are good games...in which case the answer is generally yes.

They are good RPGs, but good games ? Nope ! I disagree.[QUOTE="darkziosj"]

Yeah said a dude with a fvckin' tank sig.Ripping off has very negative meaning so no. Dark Souls is clearly inspired by western games and literature though. But it's also pretty unique. The whole concept started in King's Field, which was at the beggining just a very lame and dumbed down Ultima Underworld clone. But with each entry it got better and the whole world and it's style has gotten more unique. Dark Souls is culmination of this. You can still clearly see what influenced it, but the source material has been digested and turned into something very different and unique.Â

90% of wrpgs recycle the same D&D fantasy and classic sci fi setting over and over again so i can say with no doubt they are just as generic as Jrpgs are and Im pretty sure the weaboos (such a dumb word by the way) are nowadays much more respectful then your avarege COD fan.
Considering China has a written history with more than 3500 years and the whole Asia is "older" than Europe, any western idea is a rip off of some Asian idea (and any US idea is a rip off of some EU or Asian idea... 237 years make is a little baby compared to most EU/Asian countries)
Uhh...not really.Considering China has a written history with more than 3500 years and the whole Asia is "older" than Europe, any western idea is a rip off of some Asian idea (and any US idea is a rip off of some EU or Asian idea... 237 years make is a little baby compared to most EU/Asian countries)

Dark Souls is a western RPG (the fact that it was made by japanese devs has nothing to do with it). It fits into the genre and reincarnates it and pulls it long way in the right direction. It definitely does not rip it off.

Yeah said a dude with a fvckin' tank sig. There's nothing more American than an M4 Sherman tank unless you paint it red white and blue. And it's an icon of World War 2.
Â
I am not American by the way.
