Poll Is pc technically next gengen? (80 votes)

Yes 64%
No 36%

Since, at launch, a pc is already vastly more powerful (by a factor of least 2) than the xboxone and Playstation 4 and since many of us, including developers and publishers prepped pc and claimed it was a "next gen" experience before launch, is the highest end pc's technically a next gen, gen experience already?

PC's arent defined by generations of consoles. They arent consoles. A PC made today and a PC made 10 years ago is still a PC. How can you place it in one generation? Also consider that PC gaming's been around for 30 years now - would that make it 1st gen?

You just can't. PC is PC. It plays games as good as its hardware will allow it. It is exempt from the generation classification.

PC isn't really a platform bound by generations. It just evolves constantly. I guess the closest thing you could get to generations on PC is the different iterations of GPU/Processor/RAM?

@NFJSupreme: Not 4 to 5x more powerful and the PS4 is 10x the PS3 so you have several years to go before you see what the next consoles can do.

Ridiculous question. PC's don't have "generations"... unless you mean graphic card generations, which is something completely different from console generations.

Since it is vastly upgradeable at any point in time, the PC is always next gen.

nope. That's something that didn't really happened until recently because the PS2 was ahead and so were the PS3 and X360 by a few years. But PC tech evolves every 6 months while consoles stay with the same for nearly 10 years.

Higher res, higher aa and in some cases higher textures for sure.

The thing is, what you console guys are calling "next gen" we have had for over 2 years +.

When you say "next consoles" are you talking about POS4 and catbox 1?

If so the "highest end PCs of today" will completely murder anything these consoles will do for the entire life span of their static hardware lives.

i kind of think of it as gen+. You can get better visuals, but they won't be amazing. You can also get 60fps continuously.

Not completely true.

Example, BF3 was night and day when you compared console vs PC.

In fact I would go as far as to say that what consoles are getting with BF4 is equivalent to what we were playing when BF3 came out.

As said before, PC doesn't have generations. Due to the nature of PC being an open platform, it just continuously evolves on its own plane.

"Not completely true". Where?

"pc occupies a funny space." - An opinion presented as an opinion. How can this be untruthful?

"hard to be next² gen if all the artwork assets etc run on consoles." - Statement based on knowledge and givens. It would be hard to be a whole gen ahead (the thread's core discussion point) if the game's polygons and what not are the same ones used on consoles. Wouldn't it?

"i kind of think of it as gen+. You can get better visuals, but they won't be amazing. You can also get 60fps continuously." - An opinion presented as an opinion. How can this be untruthful?

Regarding BF3 and the night and day difference. Yes I agree, there is a night and day difference between say, Xbox 360 and a modest PC. OT: Do you think BF3 on PC looks a whole gen ahead?

That's a good way of looking at it, but there are actual PC games that when ran on PC versus their console cousins, are well beyond just a "plus" moniker like BF3 with more players in MP and bigger maps. It's also important to remember that many games were built on PC first and the assets themselves were reduced to a manageable level that the consoles could handle without over saturating their memory and graphics processing arrays.

What continues to be pervasive is the notion of pushing visuals too hard sometimes resulting in sub-30 FPS and sub HD resolutions. I truly hope that this time around that 30 FPS minimum is actually met more often while still going for 1080p on the PS4.

Sounds like you're saying that consoles hold back PC and that's true to a point but it's not always the case.

Yes BF3 played and looked like a next gen game compared to the console versions. When you look at the amount of things going on in the game from physic to graphics to detail to the number of players etc.....yes they are two different generations.

I don't completely disagree with you, just saying that it's not always the case.

Ah yes. Larger maps and additional players can change the experience entirely. It's just not possible to get a 64 player multiplayer experience on PS360. A very good point.

Of course, the door can (and sometimes does) swing the other way regarding importing of assets, it's why I wrote it in the form of an 'if' statement.

Yeah, I very much agree with your last point as well, but I'm quite severe I want 60 frames.

Yeah, that's right man it's not always the case with consoles holding the PC back. I think I got a bit confused by what you were saying, my apologies.

Wow. Those are some very strong words about BF3. Another guy just reminded me about the larger maps, and higher player count on PC. So yeah, I can see why you'd say it was a whole gen ahead. I've always thought of it as a really shiny version, but this is some food for thought right here.

A whole gen ahead ... yeah maybe I'll um and ah about this for a few days, lol!

@psymon100: Yes I want 60 FPS standard too. Especially with FPSs in multiplayer. SP games like those going specifically for a cinematic feel are perfectly fine at 30 FPS as long as the framerate doesn't dip below that.

highly doubtful that they will look bland when games have to support a crappy cpu and mid tier gpu in the PS4 , O wait you think plasma turns crappy graphics into marvelous graphics I forgot... What you think is great is actually bland I get it now

"Perpetual" gen. BETA console.

Next up, consoles having Office, keyboard, some other PC features from years ago.

Live streaming, multi-tasking, email LOL. Even hardware stemmed from PC this gen.

It takes quite some money if you want to be on the bleeding edge tho.. and probably useless if you just love mostly console exclusives and where your buddies play at.

i guess if you build a powerful enough rig, it will be next next gen. but there are no next next gen pc games yet, so the best you can do is take the most intense game possible, multi monitor it, 120fps, whatever. but basically it will be an incredible looking version of the best version of whatever game on the top platform.

If you are defining it by the power of top end pc I would say no. If trends continue next gen consoles that realease in say 2020 will be more powerful than any pc configuration you can put together now including sli titans, 780 etc. I imagine next gen consoles will come an advanced form of oculas rift and tech to handle 8k gaming. In other word your looking stacked dram, 18-20 tflop gpu, and real cloud processing.

Oculus Rift have said a few weeks ago that they will not be making a model for the consoles becasue the consoles are not powerful enough.

I know I know (why phones?!). Phone dont run at 60fps

Yea they do. Well mine does. Xperia Z running Cynomod runs at a nice 90FPS on the desktop and 60/70 in most apps (Battlelog App is the toughest of them all at the moment believe it or not, running at 20 FPS!! i suspect thats something to do with DICE being crap at app development though)

technically yes but PCs don't take advantage of it when most of their games are games like Proteus and machinarium. majority of PC games can almost be run in a web browser. very few take advantage of PCs hardware. so PC has the potential to be next gen but there always a step behind because they just don't have the powerhouse games that counsel's have, which is why PC gamers usually resort to signing petitions for council ports

So much BS packed in a few lines, impressive...
