Is Horizon Zero Dawn the most subtle feminist AAA first party title to date?

LOL what the **** happened in this thread?

Long story short, dakur tried to suggest that japan knows how best to portray females best despite an age of consent of 13 and child anime porn being legal there.

he was owned.

More like you not understanding written text or statistics.

As usual video game fans are morons. I have no problem playing a game as a feminist or as Donald Trump or as a good guy or bad guy. It's a video game and as long as it's done well I'm happy. It is not a brainwashing tool like you reactionary morons might think. Only the craziest of the crazies even use terms like "SJW".

@dakur: The game has been streamed in its entirety and all of what I have said has been confirmed to have taken place.

Actually, I agree with the fact this game is a feminist AAA title. As for it being subtle about it? Not even close. Apparently, every man in the game is portrayed as either weak or evil. The main antagonist is a white man. Also, the dialogue sprinkled throughout the game is even more misandrist, alluding that men are the downfall of humanity and shouldn't partake in things like science. Also, Alloy outright admits that she never wants to have a male child, only female.

This is definitely a feminist game. Funny how none of the video game journalists never mention the misandry though.

Damn if this is really true, I am not going to buy this game. Last thing we need is SJW's developing games. I'm just going to get Rise Of the Tomb Raider and the Uncharted DLC

Why should it matter if the Main Character is a Dude or a Chick?

I never understood this.

Just make the character interesting or something that the Player will actually give a shit about.

Lol during our conversations two people called your BS out while 0 challenged my assertions. I provided several links with statistical data you provided a link with an opinion piece. Stay mad

What I am saying is that Japan has also room to improve but definitely not following western standards which are worse like the statistics show. And even if half the abuses in Japan are not reported (which is a pretty ridiculous number) it would still pale in comparison to the US. So Japan must be doing something better. Fact is many many adults are attracted to young people, it's a generalized behavior. How to handle it? I'm inclined to think that outraging over pictures is one of the least helpful behaviors.

All statistics favor Japan's approach, until then...

Also child abuse =/= drawings of sexualized children. This is the ridiculous puritan notion with sex that westerners are incapable of detaching themselves from. It's like saying that a guy who draws somebody shooting someone else is a murderer. Pfft.

but the statistics don't factor in the fact that (according to that article) some level of child abuse and the sexualisation of children is considered NORMAL behaviour. if the age of consent is 13, that makes a hell of difference for F*** sake, how can you not see that?

never said it was Although i would consider it child abuse if you were to start showing those drawings to children.

I consider also what they do with Disney kids or beauty pageants child abuse but it is also normalized in the US so I guess every nation has some level of normalization of child abuse. The age of consent in Japan is not 13, it might be written as 13 but as with all age of consent laws it is a complex issue and here is a fairly good explanation.

https://www.quora.com/Why-is-the-age-of-consent-so-low-in-Japan

"These rules makes the de-facto age of consent of Japan at least 18 and can be interpretative as 20 in cases. This makes Japan having the highest age of consent in the developed world along with Turkey and several states in the United States such as California and Florida."

What country do you live in? what is the age of consent there? You have now skipped over the issue of anime depictions of children having sex being legal in japan and are limiting the discussion to child abuse. Beauty pageants are not the same as objectifying the child as a "idol" in the *** sense meaning sex object. I can say that George Clooney is a handsome guy, that doesn't make me gay!

One problem with the article you linked there on Quora - Right at the bottom

"Update: I got some information searching through judicial president online and got the feeling of the necessity of some serious updates. I need to rewrite the entire thing since most of the previous answer were not accurate."

Although the age of sexual consent in Japan is 13 years of age, prefecture law usually overrides federal law, raising the age up to 18. The legal age of consent for sex in Tokyo and Nagano is 13, not 18 like the rest of the country.

For sexual consent issues, federal law is powerless against prefecture law.

That doesn't sound so subtle at all.

And notice how everyone tiptoes around this comment and pretend it didn't exist. Anyone care to at least verify or authenticate?

Can't agree or disagree with the dude until we play the game. But yeah it would be the exact same problem, as women being throwaway characters to get fucked or create arbitrary conflict like the women of season 1 True Detective. Good show, and mostly good plotting, but the female characters on that season were paper thin as characters.

Feminism when done right, isn't the woman being better, it's women being treated as equals. In terms of getting similar level of effort to create a complete human being, now a lot of it also depends on the type of story you are telling, but for all the shit the US gamer review got. The following seems pretty damning:

I struggled to see why Aloy would go on these needless side tasks along the way of her ambitious quest. She doesn't have an all-encompassing job, like another grey-haired RPG hero. And growing up as an outcast, Aloy was openly shunned by other adult strangers even as an innocent child. Because of this, it's puzzling as to why Aloy would literally risk her life for the welfare of randos and that of the local tribe (and other tribes) that disregarded her mere existence throughout her childhood. There are painfully few instances over the course of the game where Aloy stands up for herself and grows a personality outside of the cookie cutter “sarcastic hero” that video games are prone to embedding in their protagonists.

Which similarly is a problem with how a lot of films are done today. Not from a social standpoint, but a lot of the characters behave in a manner that's become normal because "well that's just what that character does in these movies", and in return that's how our game characters are. They gotta be just good looking enough, but just normal enough that they aren't overpowered, pleasant, all that good stuff, but they don't act like a person. They don't come off believable, they are just passable.

That review may stop me from buying the game.

Gender parity? Because its not like a thousand years of evolution exist and woman are generally better nurtures and men are better fighters.

True her body type is still quite bangable, but not my most preferred. Same goes for the face.

She's too manly overall.

And any story that challenges that makes you outraged? That's the really weird part. I loved the movie Planet of the Apes even though I understand man is smarter than Apes. Knowing that didn't effect my enjoyment or cause me to stage a boycott. Y'all are ridiculous!

@mark1974: No i just hate when SJW beta males cream their pants over this shit. I can't imagine in what way this would make a man excited.

However it seems like it is a good game set in a beautiful world with robot dinosaurs so ill probably pick it up.

@Quicksilver128: I doubt the point of the female character in this game is to "make a man excited". I think it is trying to portray a normal non sexualised person. I enjoy sexy ladies in video games as much as the next guy but it isn't a requirement. It would be nice if women could enjoy playing these video games too. They don't just exist as nerd fantasies for men. I don't think a strong female character who isn't half naked should be considered controversial.

I don't think any "SJW beta males" literally creamed their pants. It's ok if they did however. It's a big world and there is nothing wrong with different kinds of people enjoying different kinds of games. Why hate people who are different from you? I would hate to live in a world were everyone thinks the same as me.

@mark1974: No i personally just dont enjoy playing female heroes, I never have. If there are man that enjoy it thats fine but its always been something that just doesn't appeal to me.

If the game is good enough i can overlook it but its a bit concerning to me that nearly half of all game heroes seem to be female now.

@Quicksilver128: Yeah, there are a lot of female characters these days. I've always been fine with playing as a female character. I never see the character as me though, I know a lot of people do that. I like escapism in my games and I prefer to play as an alien or something exotic like that. I've never wanted the character to be more like me. As a hetero sexual male I enjoy looking at a female character more than a male I guess. In the end it doesn't make much of a difference to me. For example, in movies I don't care if it focuses on a female or male lead. I would be interested in a woman's take on this issue.

@mark1974: I always thought it was just more relateable to me to play as a male character. Take the Witcher 3 for an example, when you choose between Triss or Yen. Those are entertaining sections but it wouldn't have been as enjoyable if i was playing as a female.

I always like the epic showdowns between the heroes and villian. Solid snake vs Liquid, Cloud vs Sephiroth, its just not the same with a female hero, for me anyway.

I could care less about race, sex in games I play. Just want the game to be good. People focus too much on desiring to see their own agendas present in all areas of life.

Personally I see no reason why you can't choose the looks, sex, race, everything about your protagonist in EVERY game these days. I hate it when my character is picked for me, like in the Witcher or Splinter Cell or many others. Make it like Fallout 4 or Mass Effect where you can design your avatar and the voice acting adjusts. No reason that could not have happened in this game. That option makes everyone happy. Want to always play black females, there you go. If I want to make my ultimate white macho dude I can. Why can't we do this in this day and age. Dont box me in.

Games would be much better off with out the politics that go on nowadays. Everyone is trying to push their agenda on creative works. I feel bad for concept artists and designers who get their ideas shut down because the director heard from the PR manager that such an idea would cause a Twitter riot.

I don't try to Identify myself with the character I'm playing as. I tend to see myself as an overseer of sorts. I'm not worried about who is represented in a game. I will play a man, woman, alien or robot. My imagination is not limited to the scope of the real world.

Cheers to that. Just sit down and enjoy the freaking game or don't.

It's nice to see strong female characters and diversity in a game that doesn't feel artificially pushed. GG did a good job designing the character and world and it's good that a female is the protagonist of the next big AAA franchise and not because of her bouncy boobs. Anyways I can't help but laugh at all the drama that these topics provoke in the west. In Japan strong female characters are so normal as well as strong teen characters which the west is still struggling with. It seems to me Japan is a much more mature culture with these topics.

Japan gaming culture being mature????? Are you fucking kidding me? The Japaneses are the worst offenders when it comes to unproportional body shapes in video game. They are obsessed with little girls, you could almost call it pedophilia.

Lucky I refreshed and was able to read the reply because I was about to post the same thing.

But is not like I hate Japan's approach either, in fact, I have come to appreciate it even more nowadays now that the current western trend is to make women look like men. Shit is getting stale fast with the manly mary sues but I'm glad I can always find refugee in Japanese games. They aren't afraid of female sexuality like the modern manlets of the West.

Very relevant link: https://my.mixtape.moe/fgcxhr.webm

This sent Gaf into a frenzy a while back and now some even want to boycott the game. haha

And that's why I claim Japan is more mature. They can perfectly well fit liking women's or men's physical qualities and at the same time make strong female characters. One doesn't substitute the other or substract from the other or has to be excluded by the other. For me that's a culture that is mostly all over political correct BS and has transcended to really identify what's relevant. I don't expect westerners to understand it though since they are trapped by the ridiculous drama behind identity politics.

Amen

There should always be games that have a fix protagonist and games that let you make your own character. We can and will take both, thank you very much :)

Right now though, some gamers not only want their own characters but seems like they also want their characters properly reflect who or what they were thinking of while they were masturbating. :D

tbh, its nice and all but well i think its taking quality development time and resources from...you know, actually working on the gameplay mechanics you know? But then, for some people, who you bone IS the game. lol

Aloy is far far from a feminist character. Unlike modern feminist Aloy does not bitch and cry about how she's oppressed instead she proves using her skills that she is a total badass at the start of the game.

Really don't care what race, gender or skin color a protagonist has either. I really hate when people focus so much on gender politics and race instead of just enjoying games for they offer. If the game is good it's good, if it's mediocre it's mediocre and if it's bad it's bad. Of course, it also comes down to personal taste. One of my friends freaking love VN (visual Novel) and games with longs ass cutscenes. I dislike both. but that just me.

Most games (and movies) that force their agenda is everywhere. To avoid them is like avoid bad humor and bacteria :P

To be completely fair you do all these side quests so you got shit to do lol. They don't really care about giving Aloy a valid reason to help these people. Just do it cause it's more content. Don't overthink things as to why you do them.

I'm one of those people that's had a life full of great sex. And had relationships short, and long term. And am currently married.

I was just telling my wife yesterday how much I LOVE this game because of it's natural (not forced) female power. Aloy is SO badass. I love that she's not another Miranda from ME, or another video game girl designed to get little boys feeling funny in their pants.

Anyways...yeah...I give the devs mad respect for not only how good this game is, but the sexual/gender/racial overtones of equality they've managed to work in without forcing it.

Lara & Ellie > Aloy

I've been a long time fan of TR, but I would have to said that I actually think Aloy is a more interesting character than Lara. Maybe it's the english accent, makes Lara sounds snooty.

Incoming shitstorm of gamers who think they know everything about feminism.

Feminist was a trigger word added to the thread as click bait. Most normal dudes HATE that word.

Really?? Oh man thats not good. All the men are portrayed as weak, dumb or evil? That does sound like a feminist agenda.

I like strong female characters, including protagonists, antagonists and every other type of character, and I like all kinds of diversity in games as well. It's awesome when you can get a strong female character in a game, like Samus, to Lara Croft, etc. But when it's described in the terms that that writer does, and it's highlighted to such a degree, it makes me hate it a bit. Seriously, "patriarchal"? I couldn't cringe hard enough at that part. It makes the game seem more like preachy garbage than just genuinely great. Luckily I don't believe that that's what the game is really about.
