Is getting a 10/10 on GS a shoo-in for GOTY?

Yup. But Bayonetta 2 is still a very likely candidate. Right now, i'd say it's between Bay2, Divinity OS and Dark Souls 2. But the year's not over yet.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 says hi. That game got a 10 here and was the only game to get such a score, yet Red Dead Redemption won. I always though RDR was a little overrated myself, but then again, I've never been able to get into sandbox games the way other people could. Although I think the fact that the first Super Mario Galaxy 1 got GOTY here did have an impact on GS's decision.

Like others have said, a review is just one persons opinion. If Carolyn Petite or Tom McShea were still here and reviewed Bayoneta 2, it would have scored a 6 or 7 because of the side boob and crotch shots. There is no way either of them would have voted for B2 for goty. And I'm sure it won't be unanimous among the staff here now.

Silly thing to say. Why have a 10 in the first place then? It's reserved for games that are at the peak of their genre. That absolutely succeed in all it tries to do.

10 is an overexaggerated score. A clear message from a web site they're sticking out of publisher's arse.

12/10 would be over-exaggerated. A 10/100/A+ whatever are all part of the review scale, and get used to score how good a game is.

Well, okay, but I stand by what I said. Imho no game deserves a 10 because every title out there has some kind of shortcoming.

10 doesn't mean it's perfect either. GS called it "Prime" first, but now it's "Essential". I like essential more. Sounds fabulous.

that 10/10 is the opinion of just one person not gamespot. I suppose before choosing a GOTY they all gather in a room to discuss which one will it be.

No especially when the review was from a freelance journalist who probably won't be in the discussion for choosing game of the year.

If the short-comings are so small that they don't influence the opinion of the rest of the game, then I think that a 10 is reasonable to give. For example, Dark Souls may have some frame rate issues, but everything else was so amazing that those issues didn't influence my experience.

History says no. The only thing it means is that you get to rub it in Lems and Herms faces because they're the only ones without an exclusive 10

I thought that when Gamespot was talking about all the 10 out of 10 reviews they've given, they said Chrono Cross and Bayonetta 2 were outsourced.

EDIT: Nevermind, they were saying like Chrono Cross no one else in the office could vogue for it because no one else had played it yet.

No, and with so many fantastic games that have come out, and still to come out, I would be disappointed to see Bayonetta 2 get GOTY.. although if GS wants to help Nintendo boost sales that might help along with the 10/10 score.

Nothing is a "shoe in" when it comes to GOTY on Gamespot.

Tons of people weren't expecting a handheld Zelda title to win last year, let alone out do much bigger games and ones that people thought were significantly better.

Then why have it on the scale at all? If it's unattainable, might as well just remove it and have 9 be the highest rating, don't you think?

Not really. When someone gives a 10 to a game it sends me several potential messages: it isn't objective; it may be a conflict of interests (publisher paid for the review); it may be a part of publisher's marketing campaign (flood of 10s in the case of Halo 3 and several other games).

Simply put, it just doesn't feel right.

I'd leave 1-10 scoring system, but "10" should be like an unconquerable mountain peak. Because there will always be better games.

Why? that's stupid to have a scale where you have a score you aren't going to use.

No, it really does't.

You should know this best when you Heil68 and other SW members were trying to nominate the best games of last generation. All of you had personal "best games" (lets say your "10" game of the gen) that were completely different from each other, but you had to compromise and make cuts to decided on one game that had qualities you all could come to grips with.

That is the same way a GOTY is presented. Just because the one reviewer thought it was a "10" another reviewer could see it as a "7". One glowing opinion isn't going to sway opinions of others who feel there are other games that were better.

All the "10" does is put it in the running for the GOTY award, which it may win, but the score only serves a guaranteed nomination. Honestly, scores are probably thrown out the window when it comes to actually deciding the GOTY among the best games of the year.
