I agree is moves rather quickly, im guessing 3 to 5 years aswell. But crysis isn't really CGI style. CGI blends in characters with its backgrounds perfectly as far as shading and such go. Crysis is a while away from CGI

Im sorry but i think Jurassic park one has some of the greatest CG. Sure King Kong and LoTR look great but no other movie looks as realistic as Jurassic park 1. Its the most visually spectacular movie out there...sure there were a couple of dodgey areas (the bronchusaurus scene) but overall its was great (T-Rex scenes)

I second that, besides the Pixar engine is too "puffy".

Useless info: Adam Jones from Tool worked on Jurassic Park.
IMO King Kong has the best CG scene to date when Kong fights those 3 T-Rex like Dinosaurs.
As for the topic, video games are always evolving, but graphics wise, they'll never be on par with pre-rendered CG.

Well you need to pick one up, either looking close to real-life or looking like Toy Story. Toy Story doesn't look to impressive to me, and it could be done easily by todays standrads running in real time. However the game would look like crap, just like the animated movie. Mostly suitable for kids.

The lighting would be the biggest problem, everything else looks 10 times less stunning as Crysis for example. Check the Toy Story characters now try to imagine them in-game. I bet a UT3 player model has way more polygons as 10 of those Toy Story characters.

Think Toy Story like game was doable 2 years ago.

I would say around 2015 you'll start seeing games reaching or meeting CGI of the past. 2025 they will be neck and neck with CGI of the age. 2035 photo realistic... Where everything looks almost as if it does in real life. 2045 you can't tell any more what is real. MATRIX!!!

I can't agree with you there. Jurassic Park looks way better due to the rain in the scene and the fact that the dinosaur is the only CG thing in the image. I know I'm looking at a nearly fully rendered scene in KK, but in Jurassic Park I can quit happily accept that a dinosaur is about to eat that dude on the toilet lol.

The T-Rex was awsome but the raptors totally owned in this film. We need a new Jurassic Park game where you can play as them.

Amen to that.  The shock value of Jurassic Park CGI was insane.  I was expecting great CGI in LoTR and King Kong, but when I walked into the theater and sat down for Jurassic Park for the first time..

Ive been saying this forever! its never made since to me, why this is like the first 'blockbuster' movie to feature CG in a huge scale, yet its still like totally unsurpassed in terms of quality. 1993 for the win!

Jurassic Park used a lot of models as well so the cgi and real model scenes blend giving it a more realistic look. it's not all cgi like some movies

nope, video game wont react h CGI quality for some quite time. There is just too much complex shading, lighting, and filtering going on in CGI. It takes a good CGI (1)frame to render in no less then 5min on an average PC, while video games have to render 30-60 frames in one second. You also have to remember that as video game grfx progress, so do CGI.

We've already kinda hit CGI quality. Compare Gears of War to Starcraft's (a 1998 game) CG sequences. Which is better looking?

So if I render a crappy CGI film or frame right now, you will compare it to GEoW also, just because its CGI?

It's also the first movie to have DTS 5.1 surround sound.  No wonder the T-Rex growl/yell scared the bajessus out of me as a kid. :P

are you mad? at the rate we're going, next year is a reachable target, or the most is the year after (this is with top end PC's of course), the level of photorealism we have been dreaming abou since the 4-bit era has been reaching with the technical phenimenom that is crysis

cgi stands for computer generated image .   lets face it all computer images are cgi quality  even this text post.  space invaders was cgi quality.   cgi dosn't mean life like.  lifelike can be done,  but not in real time.  i think to get life like and real time is still about 20 years away.  as far as toystory,  yes that is very achievable right now.

Yeah, I don't think anyone here knows that, though. I don't think they used any CGI except for back rounds and other unnoticeable things.

Videogame graphics are NO WHERE NEAR the level of prerendered CGI from even old movies of the 1990s.

Current realtime graphics are not even close to Jurrasic Park or Toy Story. Not even Crysis comes close. In-game real time graphics have a LONG, LONG, LONG, LONG way to go before they catch up to movie-quality CGI.

The lower-end, lower-budget CGI used in television commercials and television shows from 10-15 years ago, well, I would say game graphics are getting close to that. However, most prerendered CGI used in game intros & cutscenes from the last 10 years are still better than the best realtime graphics. Unless you're looking at really ancient CGI used in 3DO, Saturn and PS1 games from the 1993-1995 timeframe.

Also, peoples opinions don't really count. Neither does mine. It's about fact not opinion. It's a fact that game graphics (even on highend PCs) are technically not at all close to highend or even midrange CGI, even CGI from 5-10 years ago.

The next generation of consoles might get us closer to midrange CGI, but don't expect movie-quality highend CGI to be matched by realtime graphics even in the next 3-5 years as next-gen consoles come out.
