Poll Is competition important, or just the XBox? (41 votes)

Competition is what's important. 88%
I say "Competition is important" to defend the XBox 12%

Let's just face the music here. There are no announced games that have a bigger chance of making an impact as a system seller than Sea of Thieves had. We can assume there will be a next Halo, of course, but the brighter days of that franchise are behind us not ahead. In the swirling vortex of System Wars narratives, I really want to know where people stand at this critical point in time. It may be a conversation worth revisiting after E3, and that may be the best result, even if you are a dyed in the wool XBox loyalist.

In the end, you want to be into gaming for more games and better games. If you can't be about that, you probably don't have any business in this forum and shame on you. In the past, this has always gone without saying, but also in the past, more competition has always meant more and better games because the companies that sell these systems would back them up with robust first-party offerings. Competition used to mean having games that would not only take advantage of and show off the advantages of the unique hardware of the various consoles but they would also spurn an 'identity' of sorts for that 'brand'. It was a clever way to reinforce not only the identity of the system but also the gamers that had that system. All of that boring marketing talk aside, in the end, it meant more games and especially for those of us who would get more than one system.

This brings us to the current state of things. XBox has a unique strength in its online service, but the games that expose that strength have been few and far between. XBox has the most powerful hardware, now, but there are no unique titles to plant the flag on and definitively have gamers flocking to enjoy that "Only on XBox" experience in all of its 6 teraflops of glory. XBox is even the product of a unique company, in that it is a highly progressive and inclusive corporate culture with mind-boggling social and technical resources at its command, yet the XBoxes marketing has been... dudebro-ish? I'll even go so far as to say that the Xbox has a wonderful controller, too.

So, I have to ask, where is this competition? When did selling a plastic box become enough to have that identity that platforms of the past had to spend blood sweat and tears to make happen? Why does the XBox fanbase not only settle for this mediocrity but insist that everyone else be okay with it as well? Competition is supposed to offer something for everyone, but where is the bar being raised with the XBox One? During the XBox 360 generation, you could fill in these blanks so easily:

"Sony had better _____ to catch up with the XBox."

"Nintendo really needs to ______ because XBox ________"

That's just not the case any more, and it hasn't been all generation long. So help me gods of above and below, if you say "but but but backwards compatibility", I will campaign to make all XBox One posting go into the retro gaming section. At what point do we stop lying to ourselves and say that there even is a competition happening here, much less, one we as gamers are getting ANYTHING out of? It's pretty pathetic hearing people raise this holier-than-thou attitude about wanting the XBox to stand aside and make room for someone else. Not to mention, Nintendo is in Final Boss mode and people talk about the XBox as if Sony is the only company on the planet. It's not the case, and gaming is good and healthy especially considering the fact that we all went into this generation with the press full-on with a bunch of crap about mobile gaming taking over the console space.

Sorry, I didn't mean to be so rude. I admire your honesty. I've read it and I can't really answer until after E3. If MS doesn't give a reason to get excited about the X1X other than BC then I will gladly join in on the MS hate train. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt until then though.

PS4 is what it is because of Xbox and MS

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Problem is SW is filled with some straight up no life gamers. That think the way they play and what they play is normal. It’s not people in here are the minority.

I buy 3-4 games a year usually COD and a Netherrelm fighter being 2 of those purchases.

The only game I’ve purchased in 2018 so far is PUBG. I will be getting RDR2 and COD, other than that there isn’t much else I’d play or sink hours into. Same would be said if I owned a PS4. Only other games I’ll play or give a chance are game pass games and EA access games.

You fanboys, and people that play 30-40 hours a week of video games y’all are the ones that care about all this nonsense. When it really doesn’t matter. Right now Xbox offers way more bang for your buck than a PS4, especially if you don’t care about the “exclusives” that matter so much.

TL:DR. Maybe don’t take gaming so serious and think everyone plays or cares the way you do

I feel like competition was important at one point between the PS4 and Xbox One, but now that Sony have very safely established the PS4 has a market leader, third party developers feel comfortable releasing their games on the platform.

At this stage now, I feel that Microsoft should be rising to the challenge and investing more in making the Xbox platform an enticing offer. Viewed from the perspective of 'competition' PS4 is in the lead and Xbox One needs to do more to rise to the challenge, while PS4's position is advantageous that it's almost a positive feedback loop as more and more games come to the system. This is just my opinion, of course. There are others who are satisfied with the Xbox One.

Competition is what made Sony and Nintendo the juggernaut they're today and what destroyed Microsoft because MS does not know how to compete.

MS loses on everything, from smartphones to OS, It only survives through windows because Apple lets Microsoft.

If one day Apple decide to catter the mass market, Microsoft will die.

That is a fair point, but when Sony was in the same position last generation, they doubled down on exclusive games to get back into things (on top of the price cuts). We are seeing no such effort from MS right now. That is what I am, ultimately, calling into question.

@Shewgenja: that's because MS doesn't know how to do it.

It doesn't do it in any market whatsoever.

Not on games with Windows.

Not on smartphones.

Not on OS.

MS doesn't know how to play the competition game, if one day Apple decides to make mac os mainstream, MS will die.

@xxyetixx: that's not a valid point.

MS doesn't offer anything new to casuals, it doesn't offer market value and can't get more market share.

When you go to a store, you see a ps4 bundle with 3 exclusives you can't play anywhere and you see Xbox with half baked third parties.

People with life will not research, they'll go to a store and get the console with more games avaliable at ready.

MS loses even in this.

MS are in trouble if they can't find a way to start competing next gen. I don't like what I hear from them saying their not doing generations anymore. If that's the case Sony will continue to dominate and Nintendo will fly past them.

You could also argue if Apple or Amazon decided to enter seriously into the console market Sony would be done as PS is keeping Sony afloat.

Competition is the very reason the PlayStation 4 is in the state it's in, Sony blew it last generation and subsequently lost a huge chunk of their previous market share so they obviously had to rework their strategy. Expect Microsoft to come out swinging hard next generation because of what has taken place this gen, they're already doing it now from an infrastructure standpoint and are clearly building up steam in the game department behind closed doors for a strong launch. The Xbox One was the typical third console curse like the PlayStation 3 before it, the Nintendo 64 before that, and the Sega Master System before that.

This is fight or flight territory for Microsoft, this next generation is their last option so they have to execute. If Sony gets complacent we could see a repeat of the 7th generation.

@boycie: I mean, Amazon and apple entering on console market would be like Microsoft: two Enterprises that know nothing about console or gaming and would be utterly destroyed by Sony that has expertise and strong franchises to support it.

Microsoft only did well last gen because Sony went greedy and overpriced ps3 without anything to justify said price.

Apple had no experience in the portable music player market. A market Sony dominated for decades but they managed to all but crush the Walkman brand. Samsung had little experience in TV's but it's range of LCDTV's all but destroyed the Bravia range. And how about Sonys range of VAIO personal computers and laptops, didn't they pull out of that market as they couldn't compete.

No OS has ever come close to threatening Windows. No Office product has ever come close to replacing Office. This is the reason MS is worth 560 Billion Dollars compared to Sony's 17.

Apple was nothing like the company it is now back then. They have the money to buy everything they would need. They won't though as they consider the console games market as small potatoes.

@boycie: while I agree with you, apple innovated the market with iTunes and that made a difference. It could do well if it pulled out that again.

But in the OS side of things: windows just do well because Apple lets it. That's my point, if apple decides to go towards mass market and lower it's prices, MS would be destroyed.

Apple is mass market with iOS. I would guess that iOS is currently in more homes than Windows as home PC aren't really a thing anymore except for gaming. MS's bread and butter is the pro market Office, Outlook, Enterprise stuff.

@undefined: I think competition is no just about games, but services as well, and BC is part of that and so is Game Pass. I also think MS has been clear that they understood that 1st party games are important and they want to do something about it. Until E3 we have to wait.

Nintendo is being more worthy of that title. In terms of third-party relations, especially in Japan, Nintendo is going to start tugging on the PS4s gravity.

Disagree.

Google docs made MS office go free for the basic version.

Android made MS make Win10 upgrades free for an entire year.

The shift from desktop to mobile has definitely hurt MS, as they are not a market leader in Mobile OS software. MS could very easily be headed to the way of IBM and just focus on business solutions.

I dunno man. Like, PDO was a great game and all that. It just seems awfully weak that a current gen console needs to be justified with old games. No one gave a flying **** when the PS3 had full hardware supported BC to literally the largest gaming library up to that point or ever afterward. Giving the XBox brownie points for this seems... hollow? Maybe that's the word for it.

Objectively speaking, it would be a nice thing to have on a console that is also relevant in the here and the now. Since that's not the grown up pants that XBox is wearing, it's very hard to have a fanbase that said a $500 PS3 (Yes, there was a $500 version) was apocalyptically bad while this is somehow good... or that anyone who sees it that way has no argument...

@xxyetixx: an article doesn't change the fact that new games add more value and marketshare, plus sales, than old games, to the brand.

Why do you think switch is outselling x1 and x1x having no BC whatsoever?

I'll go on a limb and say it's because Nintendo isn't making fans choose between having new games or having old ones.

@Shewgenja: but the Xbox does have new games. It’s just you’ve deemed them worthless and no worth playing because you’re a massive sony fanboy. It just had SoT and SoD is soon. Plus all the 3rd party stuff like MH and FC5 which you don’t get on the switch.

This xbox has no games shit is as asinine as the all Sony exclusive games are movies.

This is accurate of the cows I've seen both here and abroad. It literally has the most recent first party release yet they still push "no games" or "no new games" in this instance. It's delusional behavior.

@seaofsalt: he’ll probably come back with lulz sea of piss 6/10 shit. Yet when i made a thread earlier this week asking if people considered any game that wasn’t GOTY material was worth playing it was almost unanimous that they were worth playing and people said they don’t let reviews dictate what they play.
