Some of the lower quality JRPGs have disgustingly cutesy aesthetics, but the best Japanese art design in RPGs is far more visually interesting and beautiful than Western art design IMO. It has a certain lush, ornate, and feminine quality that I love.

Some images and screens that showcase what I love about Japanese art design:

Depends, i prefer the best JRPG art to the the best WRPG art

But there are JRPGs that look terrible, like the horrid Neptunia etc

For example i like Withcer 2 art 10.000.000x more than Ni no Kuni or Naptunia or WKC art

Depends on the game. I prefer japanese style over most typical western fantasy. On the other hand, the first Fallout is more aesthitically interesting than anything I've ever seen from jRPG

I might be in the minority but I like more cartoon like art in games in general. I mean I remember playing FF 13 for example and I was amazed that how "real" it looked. Many games are getting that real vibe... which is still nice looking don't get me wrong but I guess I am used to when I started gaming when most games actually looked like games and not movies. Still doesn't stop me from buying them because then I would miss out on tons of games.

The first four images are from Xenoblade Chronicles for Wii, the next three images are from Final Fantasy X for the PS2, the one after that is from Baten Katos for the Gamecube, the image after that is from an upcoming untitled Monolith Soft game for the Wii U, the last one is also from Baten Katos.

I voted western before reading the OP at first, when I thought about Japanese Aesthetics I thought those overly cutesy anime game, but looking back at it now, I probably would have voted for Japanese Aesthetics

The designs in JRPG's have a considerably wider variety. For WRPG's you are generally limited to a kind of pseudo-reality where people just look like normal people and the settings err on the side of well-established fantasy tropes. JRPG's basically don't have any damn rules when it comes to this stuff. You can have chibi characters in one game, tall somber looking characters in another, or even both in the same game. The same goes for the surroundings which can be really imaginative at times.

I generally prefer JRPG aesthetics. The FF10 tropical islands in this thread, the Garden in Final Fantasy 8 and Alexandria from FF9 really is the exact kind of stuff I like. I like it bright, colorful and preferably lots of water, I like cheerful stuff, my favorite media is Gintama(anime), Psych(tv series), Final Fantasy 8/9/10...

However, that's older generations. Now many (NIS-America mostly... (/sigh)) jrpgs are a bit too anime-ish for me to truly appreciate them. I liked Rogue Galaxy and DQ8 from last generation but this generation there is too much about the ecchi, sexualization and trying to appeal to nerds that just want to see girls in skirts thinking "There there Kona-chan~ don't be afraiiiid~~~~ mmmm moeee mmm /nosebleed" (NIS-America (/spit)).

So basically... Real jrpgs from last generation and earlier (yet still in 3d) is what I like.

I dislike most of the Asian styles. Particularly how men look like young girls and the over abundance of scantily clad young female humanoid characters. It's borderline paedophilia at times.

Just give me pandas and I'm happy.

I do tend to be drawn to Japanese art styles but sometimes that doesn't work for me either, most of the really anime style RPGs really look generic but Im sure they have fun gameplay it's just I can't get past the boring look in order to enjoy it.

Valkyria Chronicles has probably the best art style I have seen in a game this gen. Anime but also water colours which really feel warm and natural. I don't have a problem with Western styles Demon's Souls though Japanese has a very European influence in its aesthetics and it's my favourite RPG of all time.

I love Japanese art, but I can't stand what localization teams do to the stories and voice work.I'm not a fan of the cheap multi colored spiky hair character designs that run rampant among the more standard titles, but I love the grander scale stuff that Japanese artists put out. I love the attention to detail.

Western games I can take it or leave it as far as art goes. Too be honest I really don't care if it's Western or Japanese, just as long as it's good/interesting.

I love the japanese take on western art styles like in Dark Souls and Dragon's Dogma. It's grounded in reality but not too overly generic.

Depends what mood I'm in; I find Japanese to contain more stimulating in terms of location variety. Western perhaps for character development. They both excel when at their best, so win either way really.

Anyway, I vastly prefer JRPG aesthetics.

Depends on the game. The generic medieval-fantasy thing is way over played in WRPGs and a good majority of JRPGs have that overly cutesy anime look. I think one of the reasons I love Final Fantasy XII so much is that it was a near perfect combination of both design philosophies (in gameplay terms as well). It had a very western fantasy world coupled with that fantastical, and sometimes quirky, Japanese sense of wonder.

I sometimes wonder if japanese concept artists (if they have them at all) even put any thought in to their designs...
