Poll In RPG Games, Do You Like The PC(Playable character) have voice acting ? (42 votes)

Yes. 69%
No. 31%

I Personally Prefer the PC to not have Voice Acting because Adding Voice Actin Will Ruin this Felling that you Are Playing As Yourself.

For Example In The Witcher 3,(Which I Played 1 hour in my Cousin's PC) I Didn't get the Feeling that I Am Playing as myself in that game, Those dialogue parts felt like watching cutscenes than deciding what to say to NPCs.(It only had few parts where you can choose between 2 choices of dialogue and that was it)

but in Kotor 2 and even the First Dragon Age, I Actually felt that I was playing as a role in them thanks to this fact that PC doesn't have Voice acting and I am choosing to how to talk to NPCs.

No, cause they sometimes give him a bad voice.

Absolutely not. When you read a bit of your own personality conjures up images and sound, same thing applies here. Don't want the dots filled in, it never wins over imagination. In almost all RPGs, be it Mass Effect or Witcher, it comes across as stilted and cringey.

Nope. I'm that person. I have a good imagination, so I like to respond to what is going on. They would never say what I would say so I will speak for myself thank you very much! :)

Can you put a both option? I like both. It depends on the story, characters, game-style, etc.

depends to be honest, I can cite examples of both that I like, but for an rpg where im supposed to be a character in the world I would say silent. My favorite use would be from Persona 5

Sometimes it fits and is cool.

But when I make a totally rediculous character in say Ghost Recon: Wildlands and then the first cutscene he is in he has this gravely, manly voice: That's just not how I imagined him, and it takes away from some of the immersion I had.

I do not, because it severely limits the creation tools they often use. You have two generic voices, one for man, one for woman, and that's it. Whether they fit the character or not.

I don't mind the odd grunt and phrase shouted out like in the old Baldur's Gate games. They give you a choice of a good few then. But fully voiced? Unnecessary.

Same, though I usually prefer a non-silent protagonist most of the time. Even if 90% of his lines are text only, with 10% voice acting.

I found the beginning of MGSV so freaking weird, because "snake" was practically mute to begin with in the first and second missions.

Depends on the game. The Witcher would be half fun without the badass PC and his badass voice. In Dark Souls series letting the PC speak would break the immersion.

It depends of the game of course. I prefer games where the main character is clrealy defined, so I'm okay with him or her having a VA.

Well obviously there are going to be RPGs were the main character isn't meant to talk, and that's fine. But when they do talk? I usually like it, unless it's a really bad voice actor of course.

The Mute Snake was weird because he was his Own Character in previous games and They were never meant to be the Player Themselves .(Even if it didn't had the twist the story would remain the same)

The Only MGS game that Tried this was MGS 2 but I Never Got this feeling that I am playing as myself in that game.why ? maybe one of the main reason was his voice acting and lack of character creation.(Not everyone likes to play as feminine looking man)

Depends on if they have a good voice actor. The Witcher -- Yes. Fallout 4 - No. I actually got the mod to turn off voice acting for the player character in Fallout 4.

For the sake of maximum immersion I suppose I want the PC voiceless. But if the voice acting is done right and fits the character (for example Geralt in the Witcher series) then I don't mind at all.

Depends, with characters that quite obviously have nothing to do with the player at all like Geralt it would be weird if he wasn't voiced.

Games like Pillars of Eternity work better for me when the voice over is dropped for text because the voice acting is so bad so like others have said it depends on the game.

depends, I mean games that allow you to create your own character (Skyrim, Xenoblade X, Fallout, Dragons Dogma, etc), I would prefer them to be silent protagonist since you are creating a character in your image to put yourself in the game.

But for games that already have chosen protagonists (Final Fantasy, The Witcher, Xenoblade, etc) I wouldnt mind them having voice acting, since you are playing the game through the characters perspective

I prefer voice actor's in my games because I've read my fair share of text while playing pretty much every rpg I could get my hands on while growing up. Silent protagonist's are cool for games like Skyrim and Persona 5. But for the most part I prefer voices in my games these days unless the voice actors are terrible

Lol because you aren't playing as yourself, you're playing as Geralt of Rivia an established character. Same as FF games. In Souls games you create your character.

In WRPGs it really doesn't matter to me. Doesn't make the game better or worse.

Depends.

It all comes down to whether I like the implementation or not. ME was good. FO4 was not.

As for TW, you are playing as Geralt. Not yourself.

Voice acting is the best and every game should have it. Any game without it, gets a 0/10.

If the rest of the game is voiced, then absolutely. A completely silent character "talking" to NPC's without a voice is immersion breaking (i.e. KotOR). If the NPC's are just talking directly to the PC, without the PC responding, then it's fine.

I'm good with both, honestly. I can like the silent protagonist like in say Persona 5 and the voiced protagonist like in Mass Effect. It depends on the context

No if they are supposed to be 'me' I prefer them to be quiet unless it's done really well.

Like in The Witcher 1 Geralt had a strong personality and even if you picked an answer for him, he would rephrase it or act in a way that is typical of Geralt. And that feels cool because it makes Geralt feel like a real character in this world. He is not you, he is just influenced by what you do. But if the protagonist functions more like a vessel for me, I find it annoying if the character changes or makes up his or her own responses sporadically. Consistency is important there. The voice acting needs to be even better if the protagonist is a vessel, so that it sounds the way I would want it to sound, which is tough to do.

So stay consistent in making the protagonist a vessel or a character, and if you don't do voice acting well especially in the case of a vessel, then just don't do it.

I think Divinity OS 2 has very good voice acting and good writing. But also characters with unique traits and a world that plays on that. You can play the character as a vessel or as their own character which is pretty unique. Yet your own character barely has voice acting, and I never missed it. You read the line with which you respond, as your character, click it and you hear their reply. It feels natural to me. If your character had voice acting, you would have to keep interrupting it or the dialogues would take an unnaturally long time.

Breath of the Wild, or Zelda in general, does it best when the characters establish a tone with the player filling in the rest.

I like having a voice-less, name-less and face-less characters because of the feeling that you are playing as yourself. However, some games will have a voice-less main character, but he will be a horribly ugly middle-aged generic-looking character, which makes it hard for me to put myself in my characters shoes.
