Poll In just 1 month, 2018 is becoming the best year of this generation. (61 votes)

Yes, of course bro. 16%
No, bro. No. 39%
Maybe, bro. Thinking. 5%
Let's wait and see, bro. Okay? 39%

I find it incredible that 2018 has already produced 4 AAA games, but what seems amazing is the variety. From an open world rpg, a fighting game to an indie puzzle game.

Keep in mind, we are still in January and i don't think we've ever seen this number of quality games during the first month. Not even that, but the big games everyone is waiting for haven't even been released.

I honestly believe 2018 will be a banner year for this generation, similar to 2007.

I think last year is pretty damn hard to beat. What are the aces so far?

@xantufrog: What games released in January last year were AAA?

This month alone gamespot has given 6 games 9/10. And none of those games were hyped. That's more than the first 3 months combined of 2017.

@needhealing: that doesn't seem relevant to me. Last year packed a bunch of huge landmark titles across platforms, and I asked what we've really got on deck for this year that can match up. GS giving some games 9s seems pretty arbitrary to jump that gun

There is no Breath of the Wild caliber game scheduled this year as of now. So I don’t think it’ll brag 2017 in my book.

Same here, especially from a PC viewpoint since we're getting FFXII and FFXV, plus I bet Sony will have something sweet for us this E3.

GameSpot giving a game a 9 doesn't mean the game deserves a 9.

I'd say 2017 isn't even close to be beaten yet.

Unfortunately even a 9 means little in video games since the majority of scores sit between 7 and 9. Not crapping in any game but that's just how it is.

What games are you talking about? I highly doubt you can really base the success of 2018 to just those games.

@SolidGame_basic: My guesses are Dragon Ball FighterZ, Iconoclasts, Celeste and The Red Strings Club. I think OP is going by Gamespot scores.

I'm not sure what the 2D Puzzle game is. Red Strings Club, maybe? I think it's supposed to be an interactive visual novel though. From what I understand, it doesn't have any puzzles.

Last year was very interesting considering how gaming is going downhill. I dont see how 2018 can beat the Horizons, Zeldas, and Metroids of last year. The only good game out is Shadow of the Colossus Remake and that is actually a 2005 legendary game. Soon Crapcom will show RE2 Remake and it might make fans cry.

All these games getting 9's, but I have not bought a single new game this year. So, these AAA scores don't mean shit if people are not interested in the games. It is all about perspective. From mine, this year has been useless so far. Thankfully, I have a large backlog of quality games to keep me busy and there are some 2018 games that I am interested in. :)

Not only gamespot, but in metacritic too there this month has the highest rating percentage.

Also, unfrair to compare landmark titles when all of them came out after January.

Off to a good start , but January 2017 was fire.

  • Resident Evil VII
  • Yakuza 0
  • Gravity Rush 2
  • Tales of Berseria
  • etc.

Then February -

  • Nioh
  • Horizon Zero Dawn
  • Hollow Knight
  • Night in the Woods
  • etc.

@needhealing:

We're on a very different wavelength here.

Your thread title:

In just 1 month, 2018 is becoming the best year of this generation.

My reply:

Do you think it's going to pass all the great landmark games that came out last year? Just because this was a strong month, do we have equivalent games on the horizon to make THE YEAR overall better?

You:

unfrair to compare landmark titles when all of them came out after January.

So, this entire year wins because we can only compare this january to last january? Doesn't matter how this month's titles compare to the big events of last year, and doesn't matter if you don't see similar ones on the horizon? Or do you? You never answered my question

What the heck man

I'd be shocked if this year matches or even surpasses 2017. If it somehow does, then we're spoiled as gamers.

Monster hunter world, rdr 2, sea of thieves, spiderman, kingdom come deliverance, detroit become human, days gone, magic arena, system shock.

No matter what system you're on ( I don't count systems that have hardware specs of 10 years ago) 2017 is nowhere near all this goodness. Horizon wasn't that great and neither is pubg.

@boycie: Red Dead Redemption had some very good ideas but Rockstar historically take a different approach to open world games than Nintendo did with Breath of the Wild. Rockstar are capable of building some of the most aesthetically beautiful open world games but I'm not entirely sure that those looking for an open world game that scratches the same itches as Breath of the Wild will find it in a Rockstar game. This is especially the case when you look at the single-player campaign of Grand Theft Auto V which had mission structures that exemplify some of the most linear designs in the series.

@jumpaction: But I don’t want RDR2 to scratch the same itch as BotW. That itch has been scratched and RDR2 has the potential to scratch another itch in a different spot but will be an equally enjoyable itch to scratch.

@boycie: Haha. :P

What I mean is that those saying it won't be in 'the same caliber' are basically saying that RDR2 probably won't be all that similar to BoTW, which is probably accurate.

Holy damn, another 9 before ending the month. Shadow of the colossus remake. At least in both gamespot and Metacritic, January set a new record.

@needhealing: what straws am I grasping at? That would imply I'm trying to make some argument that doesn't have a basis, when the reality is I'm not making an argument at all - I'm asking YOU some simple questions about why you have the opinion that you do. I have no problem with the fact that you think this year will be better - I want to know WHY and why you think Jan alone outshines the great stuff that happened last year. Questions that you don't seem to want to answer.

@xantufrog: You haven't asked any questions i haven't answered. I already mentioned in the original post that compared to last year during this period, seems logical.

And considering there have now what 7 games that scored a 9/10 then im referring to that.

Don't understand what question you're asking.

Gonna be extremely hard to top the likes of Breath of the Wild, Persona 5, Xenoblade 2, Fire Emblem Echoes, Nier: Automata, Tales of Berseria, Super Mario Odyssey, Assassin's Creed Origins, Cuphead, Mario + Rabbids, Yakuza 0, Horizon Zero Dawn, Splatoon 2, Ghost Recon Wildlands, Ys VIII, Metroid: Samus Returns, RE7, South Park and many others.

We have as many great games this year. Also half of which you mentioned there have below a 88 in metacritic, which is much less than the 7 AAA titles this year.

True , current gen 8 console leader is still on a ROLL guys. Incredible and the world class gaming that goes along with that, only available on sales leading PS4 is a result of it.

Thank You SONY.

Forget about Gamespot and Metacritic and all reviews, the games I mentioned have been stFrongly anticipated by people for many, many years and have very strong followings. Also consider the strength of the brands: Zelda, Persona, Fire Emblem, Super Mario, Metroid. What franchises that are coming out this year can stand with those?

God of War, The Last of Us, Red Dead Redemption, Far Cry 5 are just some of them.

Janurary 2018 is crazy too.

Dragon Ball FighterZ, Monster Hunter World (Game of the Year Material here), and Final Fantasy Dissidia NT.

But I don't think 2018 can hold the momentum that 2017 had. Just about Every month last year had a major game published and it was incredible.

2017 was a great year for every system.
