This is going back but I think around darksouls 2's release there was a tweet from Kanye West even about how much he was hyped for more souls. People like to label this series as incredibly niche but there is definitely some strong mainstream appeal there.

The Souls games are overhyped trash. If yet another of these games is all Sony can bring to the table then I'll be even more disappointed with my PS4 purchase than I already am.

MS will have their own games at E3 so they're not too worried.

Sony scored a pretty good win with Project Beast though. It will definitely be a great game and practically guaranteed to get AAAE here.

Should be a decent system seller too now that the Souls franchise has grown across 3 platforms (and getting more popular with every entry) and Souls fans are some of the most dedicated. It hasn't been officially announced yet but there is still a ton of port begging everywhere on the internet for this game.

I think just relative to the bigger, mainstream titles it does seem rather niche. I mean it kind of is, it's billed as a hardcore, unforgiving action RPG

Face it people, Dark/Demon Souls isn't significant in the grand scheme of gaming. It's a smear on gaming's butt crack when it comes to mainstream attraction. Once again, Gears 3 sold more than three million copies in one week and the latter only did a lil above a mill in two months-8 weeks-60 days.

As others have mentioned, the Souls games do belong in a niche market, but it's a niche market dominated by the Souls games alone. Battles are won over these niche markets untouched by mainstream titles. Bro games sell, but nobody buys entire new systems just to play bro games.

People who tend to enjoy Gears games will have already bought a Xbox. Sure, it will sell buckets, but the hardware sale accompanying the game's release will not be significant, since many of those players already own the console.

On the other hand, a game that targets a market untouched by other titles will become a system seller. Souls fans who previously had no reason to buy a PS4 will with no hesitation get a PS4 just to play the next Souls game. If titles like Infamous and Killzone are meant to please the existing playerbase who tend to enjoy that kind of crap, then Project Beast is aimed at attracting additional playerbase. In the grand scheme of gaming, such a move is far more effective than releasing yet another mediocre exclusive that only cows would claim ownage about on forums.

I for one will definitely be getting a PS4 just for Project Beast, even though there isn't a second title that generates even the slightest spark of interest on PS4 at the moment.

I didn't mention Killzone Shadow Fall, but since you did I will add that it has sold twice as much Forza 5. This whole sub-topic got started when someone said Microsoft IPs were more popular and they clearly are not.

What Microsoft IP has done anything this generation? Killzone Shadow has sold over 2 million and inFAMOUS will likely hit that number soon. Dead Rising 3, Titanfall and upcoming Sunset Overdrive are not Microsoft IP's. Forza Horizon 2 is not gonna sell much. The big hype around Microsoft's E3 is what 3rd party game they have moneyhatted because we know their own studios suck. Face it their in house production is shit which is why they have buy games or get timed exclusives to stay competitive.

It is pretty much an undisputed fact that Sony won last E3. That is pretty much uncontested in the gaming community. That being said, there is almost no chance Sony is winning e3 this year. Microsoft has done too many right things since Spencer took charge. They are going to bring their A game. I mean even look at the E3 conference schedule.

Microsoft is showing unannounced 3-4 exclusives on the showfloor (gameplay) after their conference. Sony is showing 2 playable ones. You can make an argument that the games aren't ready to show but jesus they need to be ready. It is nearing the first full year and there is nothing for either system. Its a barren wasteland. Everything is delayed to 2015.

Microsoft needs to make up for the countless mistakes they made this year. They know that and that is why I am confident they will win this year.

TLDR version: Spencer-controlled Xbox is going to dominate this year E3.

They are X1 exclusives if you bring in a head to head comparison against the PS4 library. Which is exactly what you are doing RIGHT now.

Gears Of War does have a hardcore fanbase, every multiplayer-orientated game has and its one of the most skill based games out there, it's not one of the label "pick up and play" like CoD/whatever. To your second point, wasn't GeOW 1 the pioneer of the xbox 360 sales in 2006, oh yea it was and was the most popular game on XBL till the release of Halo 3 in 2007. Saying Dark Souls is a console seller without any solid proof or facts = talking out of your arse, simple as that.

Same thing for Gears fans, go to Black Tusks' forums and comments are the same *Gears is my make or break for the X1*. How do you know the player fanbase weren't already in possession of a console compatible with DS? That's not attracting an ADDITIONAL fanbase as in adding non gamers to the gaming spectrum, it's merely attracting already-gamers. You'd have to be fucking Pacman in 1990 to do such shit.

And for every one person (already owning a PS4 fyi) buying Project Beast, they'll be 1000 people buying the new "mediocre" (review sites say otherwise) Gears game. Don't worry, in 4 more months DS2 will match Gears' 3 initial week of sales and maybe (big maybe) in a few years, it will scratch a quarter of the total sales.

It's a niche game for Soul fanboys basically. For hardcore fanboys, yeah it would be an instant purchase, but not for the millions of casual gamers who don't like to be stressed out with overly hard games. It's a big deal for hardcore fans, but not many other gamers. CoD, Fallout, Halo 5, Uncharted 4 and even GT7 are a bigger deal then Project Beast.

The first Gears might have been a system seller, but not the subsequent ones, since the players already have systems capable of playing them. How does Project Beast differ? First, it is indisputable that it has a hardcore fanbase. It's certainly not the biggest, but neither is it in-noticeably small. If DS2 already sold a mil, then what's to say that its followup will not attract at least half that number of people into buying a PS4? My premises are simple:

1. Currently PS4 has no game that attracts a Souls fan. Therefore, it's unlikely that the majority of Souls fans already own a PS4.

2. Project Beast attracts Souls fans. It's likely to release as an PS4 exclusive.

Ergo, it's likely that a good portion of the Souls fanbase will buy a PS4 in order to play Project Beast. It's really that simple. That is what it means to attract additional fanbase to PS4. I never said anything about attracting non-gamers to gaming, since gaming spectrum =/= PS4, or any single platform for that matter.

Souls fans will buy PS4s for Project Beast. The other exclusives are already doing their jobs keeping the existing fanbase, so this will be the straw that makes the difference.
