This has been gnawing at me for some time now, how can you give a game such a high score if you can't die? where is the challenge?

moreover, I feel that if any non-nintendo franchise did this first it would have been heavully criticized for it by the critics, certainly it would have not gotten the high scores that Kirby got across the board

there is no such game where you can die really. I mean, in a mario game if you screw up you just have to start the level over again. Why not just cut out the part where you have to walk all the way to the spot where you screwed up?

Elika pretty much saves you every time you would have died, iirc. But it's basically the same as dying and starting from a checkpoint.

But that game only got an 8.0 on here anyway.

Challenge is not gauged simply by whether or not you die. Wario Land 3, one of the best GBC games made IMO, was incredibly challenging but you didn't die. The challenge was in finishing the level and solving puzzles. Furthermore, not all games need challenge to be ridiculously fun. Not all games have to be about competition, that's a very simple outlook on the gaming genre. The game is incredibly fun, thus, it gets an 8.5. Assassin's Creed II was beyond easy but it's still one of my favorite games of 2009.

well, I have been checking metacritic and there is a pretty big difference between banjo, prince of persia (the 360 and PC versions anyway) and scores that Kirby got.

Maybe i'm just tired platformers, but if you can't die in a game it pretty much kills it for me

There's really not much different between a game where you can't die, and a game that bleeds extra lives, or has a lot of checkpoints per level. Most platformers these days fall under one of those categories.

If you are looking for hard platformers, try the indie scene. Super Meat Boy is supposed to have significant challenge.

This is starting to smell of baiting.

Ah yeah not as easy as Kirby but they aren't made for challenge, they are made for the player to enjoy the experience. Can't remember many deaths in any recent Nintendo game, Fire Emblem aside. It's just not waht they go for. The games are still awesome tho.

Wellllll... LittleBigPlanet has an abundance of levels ranging from super easy to suitably challenging... as I'm assuming LBP2 will too.

Also as noted below there's always Nintendo's other staples. Maybe DKCR will be challenging.

When is death a requirement for a good score? Anyway, there's plenty of challenge in the game. Collecting all the beads, all the treasures, unlocking all the worlds, getting all the furniture and decorating all the apartments. Plenty of stuff to find in the game that could make it take a while to get through.

I remember at the endgame in the final bossfight you can die if he smashes into the wall or catches you with the dark goo stuff... so you can probably die in the other fights as well. If Elika gets knocked down and you don't go touch her to revive her she probably can't save you either.

as i understand it the challenge in epic yarn comes from finishing it well. in other words to just finish it is very easy....but to get everything takes quite a bit more effort. thats where the challenge comes from. ...of course it doesnt come to europe until next year...grrr! so thats just the impression im getting from reviews n such like.

Challenge should NEVER come before fun in games. That's what games are for: FUN

But if you want a challenge, there are tons of challenging games this gen you could play if you're up for a challenge.

Not really, just see it as automatically loading a checkpoint, except there is no "proper" death animation/screen. I know what you mean though, in Kirby EY doesn't it make you lose some things you collected, which are then used for extra levels or something, so there IS a reason not to "die".

Ok, you can "die" but you're back alive with full health less then a second later. Infact it makes more sense to "die" then to use your health potions

you can die in Fable

No more so then in Prince Of Persia

Ok, you can "die" but you're back alive with full health less then a second later. Infact it makes more sense to "die" then to use your health potions

thats only if you have revive potions.
