Deus ex is best franchise in a term of total package not stealth. However best stealth is splinter cell chaos theory along with thief and hitman 2.

Who really cares? Are the games entertaining? Then I play them. However I do prefer stealth in 3rd person games.

Yeah but SC hasn't been about stealth in the past couple of games. Dishonored has become that go to stealth game recently.

Splinter cell for stealth, though it's hard to compare some of them.

from what I've played, for pure stealth gameplay, Splintercell.

If i'd got into Thief back when those games came out my answer might be different.

Overall, I'd say Deus Ex is the better game but not for its stealth mechanics

Deus Ex is last of that bunch as a stealth game (although I would humor it being the best game of the bunch, it is extremely good). The thing is that game is good as a "RPG" more than it is good as a FPS or stealth game, it having those elements as viable options is what makes its rpg systems so entertaining. I'd say Human Revolution is more of a stealth game than the first game, but it's also not a very good stealth game. Too basic, it's still very much diet-Deus Ex that makes it entertaining.

Otherwise Thief is the richest stealth game of that bunch, Splinter Cell's peak is about as good if not better than MGS's best outings, and Hitman's always been 4th in that group to me. On paper it should be more my shit, given the freedom, but in reality I always thought it was the stealth game for basically the children. Because it was the easiest of the bunch. That might change once I start playing through that series again. Dishonored's stealth for violence aspects are great, but ghosting isn't nearly as enjoyable as it is in the other games.

So yeah my answer is Thief with a coin flip for Splinter Cell Chaos Theory v Metal gear Solid 3. I also have pretty high opinions of Pandorra Tomorrow and The Phantom Pain.

Splinter Cell is not stealth, more like action shooter game. I say Hitman because it allows you to become someone else and make everything look like accident.

WHAT? have you played First 3 Splinter cell games? they were most pure stealth games beside thief and basically Stealth simulators. you posted the pic of worst SC games ever. series going downhill once double agent release and hit the bottom with blacklist

That was Pure stealth. sneaking in dark, without noticing anyone.

Poll was not about first game you know... he asked what is stealth now and all games, not only count first game and not other games.

WAS but IS NOT ANYMORE. This is why i can't vote for SC anymore

The only one that isn't a stealth game is Conviction. It's an action game more akin to the Borne movies than splinter cell. But both Double Agent and Blacklist have a load of stealth features and allow you to be sneaky though the vast majority of the game. Blacklist is the best in series IMO, playing all of them as they came out. It just offers the most variety, it's levels have the most routes, it has the very best AI, and you can set up your character to play the way you want. Yes you can put it on casual and shoot through it, but on perfectionist that won't do. Daylight sections are just more challenging stealth sections because you cant rely on darkness and have to be careful being in an enemies line of sight. The daytime missions offer many opportunities for stealth, it's typically a viable option. I played through Blacklist on Perfectionist, Ghost playstyle and I can honestly say its one of the best stealth games, not just in the SC series but ever. It's horribly under-rated.

Gameplay alone MGSV > All, and thats not even a competition...

Before it though... maybe SC was better, although MGS A.I. was always the best

Blacklist was HORRIBLE. the only Splinter cell i never completed and end up quitting. Its even worse than conviction. atleast in conviction i feel like im playing as sam fisher and I did beat that game. but blacklist? Sam suppose be older who looks younger, voice actor is generic and Sam feel like entire different character, worst level design i have ever seen ,in stealth game, mass effect like mission briefing. forced FPS segment and poorly done, too much action, daylight etc.

The fact is its made by jade raymond sum up why its bad game.

Yeah man I actually put off playing Blacklist for a long time because I figured it would be just like Conviction. Turns out it's actually what Conviction should have been.

It still has the faster paced movement and the mark-and-execute system, but the action isn't forced on you. On perfectionist mode, the execute function is even disabled. You can stealth the whole game and you can ghost the majority of it. The intro mission (tutorial section) is kinda lame, but I think it's skip-able.

It's definitely one of the better SC titles surprisingly enough. And as an added bonus, it still looks pretty damn good maxed out.

They have a weird in game definition for what constitutes ghosting in Blacklist. Non-lethal melee take downs count as ghosting by their definition. But as for true ghosting, there are a few enemies that must be dealt with here and there (I think).

Even then it's just splitting hairs, the game can be played 100% stealth.

I mean, at least it's not lethal.

Conviction, you have to play a shittier version of Gears of War in spots. Like some asshole at that company thought the shooting mechanics and cover mechanics were good enough for those action segments they had. Bunch of ass clowns.

It's probably because most people who are voting for it haven't played original Thief titles. I also used to think Splinter Cell is greatest thing ever before I played Thief trilogy in 2013. And ever since (and being someone who've played every major game in the franchises listed above multiple times) I think Thief 1/2 are pinnacle of Stealth genre.

I haven't played Thief, so I can't comment, but I think Chaos Theory beats out the bunch. So SC's strongest outing is the best.

The fact is its made by jade raymond sum up why its bad game.

I never argued anything about the character. He looks and sounds wrong, obviously, I never said anything about that. But the gameplay, the gameplay is superior in every single way to conviction and even to most SC games. The level design is great, whats your beef? There are several paths and the AI is finally dynamic enough to properly make use of it. There's like a couple forced sections but you can use tazers and remain silent and un-seen. In fact, a lot of the shooting segments are actually easier if you don't get seen during them (like when you're escorting Kobin). Conviction had a lot more forced shooting. In Blacklist you can clear levels without touching anyone, totally ghost, so your complaint about too much action makes no sense. Daylight, like I said, just adds variation to the stealth. It makes it harder and you really have to be careful when you move instead of always being covered by the darkness. Lots of stealth games have great daytime levels and they work for blacklist.

The fact that you haven't even played the game through kind of takes away from your opinion and you don't list any specific issues. You can't argue that it has the most options, most features, and best AI.

I'm playing Dishonored right now, and as a stealth game you really have to handicap yourself to make it a challenging stealth experience (Namely, never using that x ray vision thingy), but the map design makes it clear that the game just isn't meant to be played that way and it's quite hard to try to do so unless you've through memorized every bit of the map you're on. It's a fun game though, I'm having fun.

I used to play Splinter Cell Chaos Theory A LOT - Out of all the games in all of these franchises this would easily have to be my favorite game, I haven't played it in a long time admittedly but I hold very dear memories to it and I just recently got it back, so I'm looking forward to tripping over memory lane.

I haven't played Deus Ex 1, and honestly I'm having trouble getting into it because I don't like how annoyingly dark looking it is, and I don't enjoy games that have big maps for no reason - It makes moving through the whole area a chore. I am liking the options I'm being given and the music so I'm gonna stick to it, but right now I can't really say I'm very pleased. And it's not really even a stealth gaem at all, I mean you can pass the whole game without killing someone and without being detected but you get so many other options that stealth feels like an extra more than a core mechanic. HR was more stealth, and as far as that one, I really liked it, I want to try it out again now that I recently got it back.

I've only played Hitman Absolution. I liked it enough to finish it but it left basically no impression on me. I am however looking forward to playing the new one whenever it gets a full release, and I've been told that Absolution is one of, if not the, worst Hitman game and that Blood Money is like a million times better so I'm looking forward to trying that out. As far as my experiences go though, for now I would have to say Hitman is on the bottom end. Would be on the bottom if it wasn't for...

Metal Gear. I haven't played V, but I played the remake of the first one, 2, and 4. And they're all filled with mindnumbly stupid, boring ass exposition barf cutscenes breaking the flow of everything every five seconds. The gameplay isn't even that good either. It's been a while since I've played those games but I'll damned before I try them ever again. I may or may not give 5 a shot sometime though, just because I've been told that it's very different from the others and that's a good thing, even if the plot is apparently even dumber than usual.

Finally, as for Thief, I have to admit I haven't played any of them except 2, and I've only played that one for about an hour. I quite enjoyed it though, I have a huge backlog of games that I want to get to first before that but I'm looking forward to giving what's pretty much the grandfather of modern stealth a shot, see if it's managed to age well. After playing System Shock 2 I have high hopes for what looking Glass could offer. Same thing can be

So all in a all, I don't think I've played enough of most of these games to really give a proper answer, but from my experiences, I would have to go with Splinter Cell.

If we're talking pure stealth, the original two Thief games blow everything else out of the water. They still play amazingly well today thanks to extremely refined mechanics and terrific, open ended level design. Truly great games that would never get made today.

Regarding Splinter Cell Blacklist

So There are about 3 or 4 presumably Forced Action Shooting Sequences in the game..... namely The Cuban Airport Sequence, The FPS Sequence, The Train Chase Sequence and The Beginning of the Trainyard Sequence.

Believe it or Not you can complete the Airport, The FPS (Briggs) Sequence and even the Trainyard Sequence without Actually Being Detected..... I think it will force you to knock out some dudes here and there but it doesn't actually force you to Expose yourself action style. And with that said.... Even though it is possible The Level Design Really Really Doesn't Support that play Style and it may even required reloading the last checkpoint multiple times for it to work out that way. So really anybody who says that its Stealth Optionable or Forced Action has a good Argument. It goes either way.

Now the part where I was forced to be detected and really did have no Stealth Options was during a sequence you had to Chase a guy on the Train...... I'm pretty sure theres no way to Stealth that part... its literally a Brightly Lit Corridor with over 10 enemies placed in front of you (not all at once) and the Animation that plays out when you enter each train car forces Detection on you. Theres another Chase Sequence later on in the Power Station.... it was very similar but with Alot of Reloading Checkpoints you technically can Do it without being detected..... its very poorly designed though.

Theres also Forced Action in the last part of Isaac Briggs Side Missions. Its short but still unavoidable.

So all in all Splinter Cell Blacklist has about 90% Stealth at worst and 95% at best.

If you get detected anywhere besides the above mentioned areas then really its the Player's Fault.

As for why I voted for Splinter Cell (yep that was me)... well isn't obvious ?.... CO-OP BABY !!!! :)

But theres another Reason...

In many Stealth Games you obviously can be detected and nowa days this is no longer Automatically a Game Over.... However Trying to Return Back to Stealth after being detected in Metal Gear Solid and Hitman is Implemented so Poorly that that I just Reload the sequence or even the entire mission whenever someone spots me.

Splinter Cell Blacklist has the best "Break Line of Site" Mechanics I've come across ever Since The Last Of Us and its heavily reinforced by the Intricate Level Design and Enemy Behavior.... it works and it works well. I think its the only Stealth Game that allows you to restablish Stealth so Comfortably after being detected that doesn't require a reload.

So if you can't vote for the Co-Op.... Vote for that. ;)

1) Thief trilogy

2) Hitman - till Blood Money

3) Splinter Cell trilogy

4) Dishonored

5) Deus Ex

MGS apart from 4 and 5 is a shitty series and not at all a stealth franchise at all.

Indeed. Most people here haven't played this game, though, which is why SC is winning.

The only two games I played in the list are MGS & SC. I enjoyed both franchise and my two favorite games in the series are MGS3: Snake Eater & SC: Chaos Theory.

Not to mention I played Splinter Cell: Double Agent on the original Xbox and PS3 and the one made for the Original Xbox in nighttime is way better than the one set on daytime.

However Trying to Return Back to Stealth after being detected in Metal Gear Solid and Hitman is Implemented so Poorly that that I just Reload the sequence or even the entire mission whenever someone spots me.

For all of the previous MGS games I absolutely agree. Of course it's an instant fail state when detected on the hardest difficulties, but the general flow of evasion and returning to stealth afterwards (on lower difficulties) is indeed poorly handled. I usually just enjoy the action for a bit, but then reload and try again.

MGS2 handles it somewhat well due to enemies having some relatively sophisticated search procedures that can force you to change up your hiding spots on the fly. But this is all squandered by the fact that the game world is a collection of small rooms that briefly load from one to the next, meaning that running to the next area and hiding for a few moments is enough to shake off guards.

But Ground Zeroes and MGSV though? The flow of going from pure stealth, to all out alert, to evasion, and back to pure stealth has never been better. It's actually a very satisfying loop, it's organic, each phase has its own tricks, and it showcases both the mechanical flexibility of those games and the brilliance of their systemic offerings. These are the only stealth games in which I feel good for just rolling with the consequences. I never feel compelled to load my last save.

Of the two, Ground Zeroes definitely handles it better. Due to the nature of Camp Omega being a confined and dense area of course. MGSV has all the same systems in place, but you can just retreat to the wide open wilderness and come back from another angle. This means nothing when you're deep in a larger base, but for much of the game it's too easy to reset your situation.

Seriously, Ground Zeroes is probably the single best slice of stealth gaming I've ever experienced. It has the same excellent mechanics as MGSV, the level design is superb, the hard difficulty mode is spot on, the procure on site stuff is excellent, adds an element of risk and reward, and makes it very difficult to power through challenges. I'm almost ashamed to admit how many hours I put into Ground Zeroes. I'd love to experience a full game built on its principles (what MGSV should have been).

I'm surprised SC is winning so hard. The originals were good, but not Thief 1+2 good. I guess I find 1st person stealth far more compelling, though.

I can honestly say I have never played any Thief games in my gaming life! From my understanding, Thief series, I didn't see any advertising or anyone ever mention it to me due to those games were on PC at it's time, I didn't get into PC gaming until late 2007 and even then, I just didn't know nothing about the series.

I did played Splinter Cell, Pandora Tomorrow, and Chaos Theory on Xbox. I used to think Splinter Cell games were the best Stealth games of there times and terms of raw graphics on Xbox, it was as if I'm playing Splinter Cell on a high-end PC. The only Splinter Cell game I haven't play is Blacklist and I voted Splinter Cell cause well, it's the best Stealth Game I played as far as good Stealth games goes.

In short, Thief was a PC game and growing up, lots of friends I know didn't have gaming PC, it was all about from N64, PlayStation, PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube.

Splinter Cell is stealth game?

Take a look last 3 games

Blacklist is awesome, and you can complete the game on ghost mode and do it entirely in stealth and not kill a single person in the campaign. One of the best yet.

Well it's never too late to play classics that you couldn't play when they first came out. There are ton of graphics mods for Thief games, which make them look really good, if you care too much about that kinda stuff.

In my opinion, the art style more than makes up for outdated visuals, that's why I never applied any mods apart from necessary updates (TFix for Thief 1 (google it) and Official update for Thief 2 that comes with the installer if you get it from GOG), which allow you to play these games in 1080p and 32bit colors (otherwise you'll be stuck with crappy 16bit colors and sub HD resolutions,,, so these updates are must).

Sound design is unmatched. Every surface produces different kind of sound and these effects cover more or less distance based on that surface type. Hence, some of the surfaces are dangerous to walk on because guards can hear you easily. The game really demands you to pay attention and keeps you on your toes, even when just walking around in an empty corridor.

Soundtracks are non traditional. They aren't like soundtracks from action movie (eg: oh fight scene, Rock Music On!!!). Instead they are more like ambient sounds, that really suck players into game's world. Despite outdated visuals, Thief: The Dark Project is easily the most immersive game I've ever played. Only STALKER comes close but still doesn't match it.

Gameplay mechanics are still fluid. As if that wasn't enough, the story in all three games is really good and all of them come together to tell one big tale of Garrett. It's about his character progression and his journey. The third game ends the story really well.

I'm baffled as to why people think any other game is better at stealth than MGS V. The game is a terrible MGS game but as a stealth game is just... like no other. Yes, you can make it as na action game if you like but stealth is where that games shines. Any other answer would be just wrong
