I need to view up on Socom games. Where should I begin? (I don't own a console btw, just a VITA.)
p.s. I'm interested in this in hopes of playing a not to grey and mainstream military shooter on the PS4. Am I heading in the right direction?

Look up youtube videos on SOCOM 1, 2, 3, and Confrontation :) Gamepay is great. Like nothing you have played. Clans are like family you get so close. You can play majorly competitively or anyway you want.
It has been confirmed that on this game there WILL be custom ranked rooms!!! :)
Meaning if you don't like explosions all over the place you can make a room on a server, turn grenades off, turn mines off, turn claymores off, turn other explosives like RPG's off. Then those things CAN NOT be picked in that room. It will be in room description and under settings. Only the person to MAKE the room makes the settings!
Other SOCOM user game modes include
Paintball- This is where everyone agrees to put SMG's or pistols on semi auto and fire one round at a time at each other like paintball.
Sniper no cross- an invisible line is determined between both teams. Everybody uses a sniper rifle and can not cross the halfway point.
Game modes likely to be in game
Escort- In this game mode you have to get hostages to an extraction point. The enemy side must either kill everyone on your team or kll at least 2 of the 3 hostages. If you successfully kill the enemy team or extract at least 2 hostages your side wins.
Extraction- Much like escort EXCEPT the enemy holds the hostages and you must steal them and take them to the extraction point. Killing hostages on ether side counts against you.
Elimination- First team to eliminate the ENTIRE other side wins the round. If you stay alive even if you are losing 5 to 1 you save the round and it counts as a draw.
Suppresion- Whatever team has MORE kills at the end of the round wins. Eliminating the other side counts as an auto round win.
Demolition- (my favorite game mode) A bomb is in the middle of the map. Teams must fight over grabbing it. Once a tem has it, they need to plant it at the other teams plant site near their spawn. It has a 30 second fuse and takes about 5 seconds to arm. It can also be disarmed in about the same ammount of time. Detonation is an automtic win. Defusing is an automatic win. Killing other team is auto win as well.
Bomb Squad- Introduced in SOCOM 4 but interesting. Three bombs need to be diffused, but only the Bomb Tech cn diffuse them. One person is randomly selected and this person very heavily armored and has some badass weapons like a grenade launcher and auto shotty. They can take like 500% damage before dying. It is your job to either defend the bomb tech while he diffuses the three bombs, or kill him whilehe is trying to diffuse a bomb or before he diffuses all 3. Diffusing all 3 is an automatic win. Killing bomb texh is an automatic win.

Well, SOCOM 3 and CA had another mode where you had to protect a convoy.
Classic SOCOM is based on 7 rounds. First to 4 wins the game.
A game MVP is chosen. Stats in SOCOM are watched more closely than in most games. hit percentage, k.d ratio, and other stats are some ways to tell if you are improving or not. I am not a stat whore, but I used them to keep tabs on how I had been playing over the last couple days.
