What i mean by this is you play a game that you otherwise really enjoy. But the characters, story, setting etc just make you not interested.

A recent example of this for me is Nier:Automata. Im absolutely loving the gameplay but its hard for me to get past the fact im playing as a teen school girl with floating swords on her back.

Assassin's Creed 1, I really couldn't stand Altaïr the game being repetitive and boring didn't help. Yet Assassin's Creed 2 is my favourite in the series, Ezio being quite likable helped a lot.

Final Fantasy 15. I just can't do it. I can't play as those boy band dudes. I have a severe reaction to it.

Nier on the other hand looks great to me and I love the 2B design. She's a robot.

I am having a hard time finishing Bioshock 2 for this reason, to be fair I forget what the story was even about... I am shooting shots into little dolls and stuff.

The last game gave a chance was Final Fantasy VIII.

Squall was a prick and every character (adults) sounded like they were 8 and nothing made sense. The gameplay was just pressing a button to instantly kill everyone with random shit happening rather than crafted level design.

Having never played, but always spoke negatively of Final Fantasy, this cynicism and bile was rightfully rewarded, and stands as proof that no facts or information beyond a vague believe is needed to judge a game accurately

I 2nd this. I finally gave a couple of FF games a chance years ago but I should have just stuck to my instinct. Probably wasted 30 hours on 2 games that weren't terribly interesting and didn't finish.

No, it probably will take a game to be on the extreme side of Japanese creepy for me to not give it a shit if the gameplay is good. Largely because I don't like the stories in a lot of games, they are like straight to dvd movies, but worse.

Nah. Story and characters are secondary in (most) video games. I'll play (the good) Sonic games even though the characters are just amalgamations of the most obnoxious parts of the 90's.

F-Zero GX and Need for Speed: Most Wanted 2005 are also great games with terrible stories and characters.

I've played games with cringe-worthy voice acting (like Castlevania SotN) but it's always been in a so bad that it's good sort of way that it didn't detract my interest from the overall game.

With me actually is the opposite , i give a chance to games i wouldnt even touch because of story and sometimes i found some epic experiences , for example i had a blast with THE CAT LADY , an indie story driven adventure game that noone knows yet i highly recommend.

Not really. Gameplay is what matters most. Unless it's a story-heavy game, then that's when it could become an issue.

Ni No Kuni. Never was a huge fan of Studio Ghibli's work, so similarly couldn't get into the game due to its premises and art style.

If the design of the characters and art in video games deterred me from playing video games, I would have never played a lot of shmups like Dodonpachi DaiOuJou or Ibara, which are actually some of the best games ever.

I was just thinking about this today. Dragon Quest and Chrono Trigger. That Dragon Ball Z style outside of Dragon Ball Z is UGLY! I bit the bullet on Chrono Trigger and bought since it suppose to be a "masterpiece" and the art work isn't as detail in game and more pixels-like but I still havn't played for more than 2 hours of it.

I could deal with the annoying characters of FFX but for some reason I really hated the MC of Tales of the Abyss.

@uninspiredcup Yeah FFVIII is shit and most of the characters in that game were awful (FFIX is awesome). I would also add GOW3 too as someone already stated in this thread.

I am really put off by the main character in Infamous SS, though I haven't played it so I cant really comment, also the main in Scalebound, similar to Infamous SS I thought, well wont be playing that as well now.

I was also put off by the boy band in FF15 but gave it a go and really enjoyed the game, it does help having a Japanese partner that watching boy band crap every single day, I get De-sencitised to it.

Back in the day, yeah probably.

These days? Nope. Not saying it can't be off-putting to a degree, but if the game plays well then I'm in.

As for Nier Automata specifically, I just did what I do with most games when I played the demo. Skipped all dialogue and cutscenes.

Ideally, I'd love for games to have characters, settings, story, etc. that I enjoy, but the chances of all that lining up and the game having great gameplay? Slim.

Like FFXV looks like the opposite of something I'd want to play, but if I actually had faith in the gameplay I'd be on it right now.

Scalebound will be the first one for me, likely. I can't stand that dude's attitude. If it's somehow justified then maybe I'll play it but if they just did that to make the game look cool, then I'm out.

I did stay away from Gears 1 for months because of the talking muscle-closets but I did give it a chance eventually.

@Quicksilver128: All the characters in GTA (except in GTA3) are sociopathic, unlikable and ultimately uninteresting. And before you tell me that "that's the point", then it just goes to show what's wrong with it.

98% of the characters throughout the whole series of Final Fantasy looks extremely stupid, though. Luckily, I really don't like or play any FF games.

..except Cystal Chronicles for the GC. That game was awesome.

But no, I've never disliked a game because of it's character/s or story. If the game is fun, I'll play it.

Never. I'm used to developers not making a good story/cast of characters to save their own lives. As long as the gameplay looks to be on point, I'm more than willing to give it a go. If I based my interest on those aspects, then I'd be missing out on a number of great games.

However, if the story and characters happen to be the focal point, then chances are I wouldn't bother. But again, it must be stressed:

I was interested in FF 13 but most people didn't seem to care for it's story or characters so I passed, and it supposedly has some very annoying characters as well.

I suppose I tend to stay away from any super animified things in general.

Just started playing Viewtiful Joe 2, - Sylvia is extremely annoying and Joe isn't much better but I'm also not in love with the gameplay or anything so I might stop.

Kingdom Hearts 2 is full of cringe worthy moments but I managed to sit through it's cutscenes.

I think in general though if the rest of the game is good enough but I absolutely hate everything else I could just skip/mute the cutscenes/ dialogue.

Yup. All the story content and the character herself are cringe-worthy.

I'd also add GTA5 to the mix. Carl wasn't too annoying and Trevor was at least interesting if gross. Michael and his family shit, though, was just so annoying.

None of the JRPGs has any gameplay let alone good gameplay, and SotC is pure shit with bad performance, broken controls and all sorts of problems associated with console games back in the day.
