Graphics > Gameplay? Riiiiight...

Now I admit, Good Graphics do add to the appeal of the game but they aren't completely necessary to have a great game. If you have Great Gameplay, you will have a great game, no matter how it looks, yes even if it's Atari-2600-ish or Colecovision-ish looking (Keystone Capers Proves that point - if you haven't played it, I highly suggest that you do). Anyway, for the people that think all you need for a game to be good is great HD Graphics, this video is for you.

Pretty much everyone that bashes every good game that comes out on the Wii Exclusively. Almost 95% of the time, when a great game is announced, everybody is excited but when it's announced that it will be Wii-Exclusive like Epic Mickey, Monster Hunter 3 and Tatsunoko Vs Capcom, people immediately try to bash itby saying stuff like "Oh man, they are going to look like crap" and "HD would've helped them out ALOT" when in reality the games look great (Not HD mind you).

Anyway, this isn't about that, this is about showing those same people that Graphics are not more important than Gameplay by any means of method. By that video, the Graphics in that game are astoundingly good, HD Even, but the gameplay is terrible.

I'm with ya on that, Both are necessary. People just overdo it when they try to downplay gameplay for graphics.

Gameplay is the most important.

That game looks super fun.

Graphics for some games are part of the gameplay, so at times it can be equally as important. Either way, graphics are the number 1 thing that attracts most to a game in the first place, the second is actually seeing said game in motion, so from a certain standpoint yes graphics > gameplay.

Meh. Gamers and their imperatives! If you have great gameplay do you have a great game? Sure. Or at least you would have great gameplay. However if the game features music and sound effects that would make you want to reap your heart out, or graphics that are completely irregular in the game world to a point where it makes it annoying, it would probabably hurt that great gameplay status, hell, I wonder if great gameplay would exist in the first place. Chances are some of your favorite games wouldn't be that great for their time without some use of these in the first place. Unless you like to play games using mute, or not playing games at all.

This is mostly a myth made up by people that are butthurt about a game that is comparable to theirs in the gameplay department but totally detroys the competition in the graphics department, thus practically being a better package. These people start nonsense like this or nonsense like X game only has graphics but no gameplay.

on the subject of graphics. we need more 2D games this gen seriously. HD 2D sprites, love me some 2D JRPGs... Someone make it happen please?

if you look at the past and present the top games of the time usually had great graphics for the time. or at least great visuals.

graphics are important in the context of system wars because theyre one of the less subjective things we can discuss. the purpose of this forum is competitive debate over the merits of each system, not a general discussion of games that so many people seem to believe it is. therefore, if one platform has bad graphics, its going to get poop thrown at it here. thats the whole purpose of the forum.

I will always stand behind the graphics == gameplay. You can't have a great game if you don't have both but you can have a good game if you just have one. Yes graphics can make up for outdated gameplay.

Graphics is just a bonus that helps create a more immersive atmosphere, gameplay is always the most important part of the game regardless of genre. I can't speak fo everyone's behalf but for myself, I play games for the gameplay not because of graphics or story. If I want to oggle at visual prowess and masterful storytelling I'd watch a blu-ray movie or read a book.

Games can be great if it has good gameplay but mediocre graphics, the same can't be said the other way around. Blizzard games are a perfect example of this.

These youngins don't understand that the graphics is called eyecandy for a reason - it's not really all that important. What the graphics part of a game has to do is provide the necessary feedback to function in the context of the game. If it already does that, then it's good enough. If you can't get lost deep enough into the game to not notice how good the resolution looks, then it's just not that good of a game.

Though, I actually would play that if it had gorgeous visuals... In my mind, graphics > gameplay as I usually spend more time examining games than I do playing them :P

Not true people, if Graphics were equal to gameplay then this logic would make sense:

A game can be good with great Graphics and No Gameplay, and a game can be Just as Good with Great Gameplay and No Graphics. I would think that the game with the better Gameplay would be better, otherwise, you're basically just playing/watching a dull yet great looking game. Does that Make Sense?

I would think that Gameplay is more important because of the sheer fun factor and replayability that can be had in said games. Graphics are important yes, but not as important, while they do attract the customer to the game, once that customer plays the game and realizes that the gameplay sucks, they most likely will return it. Take Haze and Lair for Example. Great Visually impressive games but the gameplay was missing making them not so good games.

This is getting on my nerves. It is not as black and white as you are making it sound. A game CAN have good graphics and good gameplay at the same time you know. This is a cheap excuse that people use to damage control the hype of a "Graphics king" competitor. Its on another system, so they tell themselves "bu..bu...bu...its all graphics and NO gameplay" even though all of the reviewers and critics tell them otherwise.

Bottom line, having good graphics is a PRO, not a CON.

Why the anger? Nobody said it couldn't have both, we're just pointing out the fact that a game with simply good graphics and no gameplay is not as good as a game with good gameplay and no graphics. I'm sure everybody agrees with you that Graphics is a Pro, nobody said it is a badthing to have good graphics, as that isn't the argument at hand.
