Gran Turismo 7 Must Be Played Online For Virtually All Content

Take note before you buckle up, you'll need to be online to play Sony's big racer.

While many games feature some sort of online component these days, players tend to expect their single-player experiences to be left intact when playing offline, but such is not the case with Polyphony Digital's huge new racer, Gran Turismo 7. In playing the game ahead of launch, we've found that nearly the entire game is made unavailable when playing offline. In fact, the game is whittled down to little more than a demo mode if you're not connected to the internet while playing.

Gran Turismo 7 features a great number of modes and experiences, and all but one of them, World Circuits, is made unavailable if you play GT7 without an internet connection. This is something Sony detailed last fall, when series creator Kazunori Yamauchi said most of the game needs to be played online "to prevent cheating overall from people trying to modify the save data."

World Circuits is meant to be the game's story mode, but even that is diluted to what could reasonably be called an in-store demo, the likes of which you'd find at a Best Buy or Target. Progression markers such as credits and XP do not carry over when you race offline in World Circuits, and you're stuck choosing from the same 13 cars and 16 tracks with no way to unlock more unless you go online.

All other content, meanwhile, is totally unavailable without the internet. Alongside the obvious lack of multiplayer racing, this includes modes and features such as:

• Missions
• License Center
• Used Cars
• Brand Central
• Sport
• GT Auto
• Garage
• Cafe
• Showcase
• Scapes

For most players, this DRM-like approach is probably going to be fine anyway--most players staying up to date with games are playing online, after all--but note that if you're planning to play offline by choice or by, say, internet outage down the line, you're likely better off playing something other than Gran Turismo 7.

In our Gran Turismo 7 review in progress, Alex Goy said "It plays as close to driving a real car as you can get on a console, and much like shaving a few seconds off your commute, or playing on your favorite road in the real world, the game draws you in with challenges, physics, and luscious visuals."

Wow Sony, what a stupid decision. Sony fans gonna bend right over for this one. They love dictatorship censoring their games and telling them when they can and can’t play.

Dude, you literally can't play Halo Infinite unless you have an internet connection... let that sink in. of course you were that game's number 1 cheerleader this whole time 🤣

Halo does not have a always online requirement, you DL the game and can play it in full off line. :P

@kadin_kai: the problem is if Sony goes down for whatever reason, you get locked out of the game even if you have the disc version. Sport was like this originally and then they added offline modes after backlash.

The disc version does not come with the game on disc.

This is really dumb. It made sense for Sport since it was an online only game at launch (career mode added later), but for 7 it has a ton of stuff that could be offline. No idea why this was done, but this is one of the rare games I'll still buy despite this (Destiny being the other).

@SolidGame_basic: so you download it, and play it offline. Simples.

Having played it, how GT7 works is that there is no car mtx unlike in GT Sport. You have to earn enough money to buy cars and so far I only unlocked a 35k win event. Still very early I still working my way collecting the "European Hatchbacks" list of cars and not unlocked the classic dealership yet. You do have to grind your money cause man, this game is bonkers amazing amount of customizations! Highly recommends for those loving car culture, its THE GAME.

.... which may lead the casuals to pay to unlock.

Can't be played offline

That's a big problem to Cows.

I'd expect more of a kick off when we look at how they responded to previews attempts at requiring online play.

It always sucks when they put online restrictions on single player content.

I’d be very surprised if this wasn’t a temporary issue and Sony will implement some form of offline patch a few years down the line.

People would go after Sony legally if they shut down the servers, relegating all purchases moot, and the people would win. Sony has nothing to gain and much to lose by NOT eventually patching it to work offline. Whether it be anti-cheating or MTs, I can’t see this sticking in the long-term at all.

Scoring this game 4/10 for no offline mode. Unacceptable.

@SecretPolice: I don't think, in this day and age, that this is that big of a deal, is it? More of a curiosity than anything else, IMO.

I am betting there will be a patch to fix this at some point soon. Either way, I do not agree with Sony doing this, and will not defend it. It doesn't affect me as I am always hooked to the internet, but unless the game is online only, the game should have an offline mode for the single player portion. Very odd thing for Sony to implement knowing the backlash always online single player games get.

I've heard from numerous people that it's basically GT Sport but with a campaign. So always online makes sense.

A problem for those huge GT fans with really crappy internet connections.

Not sure why anyone else is outraged. I bet there's way worse things with the game to complain about.

@sakaixx: the game is a huge grind now compared to previous entries. They really encourage MTX. In fact you are always prompted to buy more credits at the PS Store.

@x_hedon: having played it more... nah I disagree. GT always been a grind but finally got my first million credits and I still working my way unlocking the cafe cars. I think game progression is doing great.

@sakaixx: I have to disagree. I’m over half way done with the campaign and I only have 500k. I am mostly in first place. You spend a lot of money upgrading the cars you earned for the next cafe menus because they are never at the recommended PP. And the parts are expensive as are the cars.

Then they always throw the “top off credits at the PlayStation store ad when you earn or win credits. They have it dialed down to nearly the single credit to get you through the campaign.

Legacy dealership is apeshit expensive and no wonder people will be forking out real money to buy cars in this game. I know I won’t. But I also won’t grind my fingers off to get exotics. So I won’t probably ever get to play those unless they are cheap at the Used car store.

You got to buy EVERYTHING with credits. Even to paint your car or wash it. $$$$$$$

PD went all out on MTX. It was NEVER this much of a grind. I have been playing this since GT1.

Sony Is truly looking out for gamers.

just unlocked legacy dealership.. no its not that expensive. Only certain cars is expensive the rest is under 1m credit. Eh that is normal progression personally everything in gt always requires money. Your main car is the cars u buy in the showroom or used car dealership and upgrade PP. GT is always a grind but easily seeing money flowing in now. My only issue is u can't sell the cars.

But a minority did moan about this and that article probably attracted some clickbait youtubers. Polyphony must notices that.

GT is a poor man's car "sim" anyway. Asserto Corsa is a much better sim than GT and isn't a grindfest.

@x_hedon: i do and I have to disagree again. I do think some classic/iconic cars is stupid expensive but most of the cars u use actually priced pretty well and later races does give better pay.

Haha this game is such a flop. Cows lapping it up though as they're starved for decent content, all their so called big hitters have been flops. Lucky they all have high end PC's and Gamepass.
