This is not about listing your favorite games or listing flawed masterpieces. What games have you found perfect or at least almost perfect? By that I mean the game had either no flaws at all or the flaws were so minimal they almost didn't matter in the grand scheme of things. What score would you give it on a scale of 100?

Game: Majora's Mask

Flaws: Frame rate. Reused assets from OOT.

Stengthts: Plot, characters, side quests, atmosphere.

Score out of 100: 98

Opinion: Best game of all time.

Lol at 98/100, pleb more. Also MM still has OoT's garbage combat and ubiquitous filler, not near a perfect game.

On my front I'd put Mario and Luigi: SuperStar Saga.

To me a close to perfect game is like a close to perfect song. You can listen to it over and over again, and never get tired of it.

These games I've played many times over:

- Half Life 1
- Donkey Kong Country 2
- Max Payne 1&2
- Dishonored
- RTCW

And more recently: Company of Heroes 2.

Are these games perfect ? Not by any means. They surely have flaws. And many will be considered bad by people that never got to experience them when they were still new and not outdated by todays standards.

But what I've found is these games offer me so much enjoyment. More than that they can offer other emotions besides being fun and making you smile. Some of these games can be tense, frustrating even, only to then overcome the odds and being proud of yourself that you made it through.

Too many games these days are scared that you'll get lost or you won't make it to the finish. But I like a challenge. But it's more than that. The shooters I listed have a challenge that is 'just right'

MM has better combat. Enemies are more proactive and more difficult as well. Bosses have also more ways of being taken down.

Anyway, this thread is to know which game you find perfect, not to criticize games others find perfect.

Odolwa and Gyorg? I find them more challenging than any boss from any other Zelda aside from Thunderbird in Adventure of Link. I actually quite enjoy fighting them.

I played a bit of SuperStar Saga back when I had a GBA. Loved the humor and writing and the combat was reminiscent of Mario RPG but I played like 2hrs.

What's so great about it?

Well, has to be my favourite game of all time... Half-Life 2. It's the main game I consider to be pretty much flawless. Very close to 100/100, definitely high 90s.

Great thread. My picks are:

Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty

Strength: Top of the line presentation, Extremely well polished, Fantastic Gameplay, Likable characters, Multiplayer, Huge replay value, Modding, Atmosphere, Mission design, Storytelling, Charming main character, Amazing soundtracks, Rewards creativity.

Weakness: Story direction might not please some hardcore fans.

Score: 10/10

.

Thief 2: The Metal Age

Strength: More grounded story, Great narrative, Strong antagonist, Likable characters, Terrific main character, Art direction, Atmosphere, Immersion, Level design, Secrets, Lot of gadgets, Tight controls, Good replay value, Doesn't force you to kill enemies, Rewards creativity and quicksaves encourage you to be creative.

Weakness: Ending feels a bit rushed. A missed opportunity IMO. They could've shown affects of the end of The Metal Age and how our actions affected the city. Instead they just tease Thief 3.

Score: 10/10

.

World in Conflict: Complete Edition

Strength: Great story, Shows good and bad sides of both Americans and Russians, Great antagonist, The game doesn't need a sequel because it feels complete, Explosive gameplay, Great acting, Amazing visuals, Fully destructible environments, Good replay value, Amazing soundtracks, A lot of great characters, Character progression of Banon, Storytelling, A lot of small touches, Level of polish, Rewards creativity.

Weakness: Doesn't show the fate of Captain Malachenko in the end, some scenes can use more punchy sound effects.

Score: 9.5/10

.

Max Payne

Strength: Great story, Charming main character, Unique storytelling, Dark and gritty atmosphere, Tight controls, Great gameplay, Was a benchmark game of its time, Lengthy campaign, Creepy bad guys, A lot of polish.

Weakness: Lack of enough Replay value.

Score: 10/10

.

Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven

Strength: Atmosphere, Great story, Interesting characters, Fantastic gunplay, Tight controls, Targeted for mature audiences, Classic soundtracks, A lot of attention to detail, Level of polish, Great acting, Cinematic direction, Lack of quicksaves increase tension and make gunfights more intense.

Weakness: Hand animations.

Score: 10/10

@Juub1990: it's a turn based RPG where you don't just sit around doling out and receiving hits, because you can actively dodge attacks at you at any given time and can amplify your damage with proper timing on your button presses.

The combat isn't deep, but it's varied with humorous interpretations of the Mario world like Bro Attacks (the game's version of magic, essentially), which use up less points if you're willing to not be given QTE button prompts (thus increasing the skill ceiling).

The overworld is great because it's goddamned varied compared to the regular world, fire world, ice world, jungle world, etc. we get in Mario games now. You get a theater for Yoshis to watch movies in, you get a university for the BeanBean residents, there's a soda factory with some of the game's best bosses. Beyond that, unlike games like Chrono Trigger that half-ass this, you can avoid any encounters at all from the overworld if you please provided you have the skill to do so.

Add that to the subversion of expectations for Bowser to be a villain (he loses his memory and turns into a petty thief), being able to turn Luigi into a surfboard to surf across the sea, a constantly funny sense of humor, and perfect pacing, game's damn near perfect in my eyes.

I never think anything is perfect. I think it's games that are well defined by their imperfections yet still captivate me for one reason or another that stand out more to me.

Close Combat 2: A Bridge Too Far

+ Great tactical wargame

+ Morale is factored in and units react accordingly. When the unit is decimated, the morale of the survivors drop and they retreat.

+ Units follow way points assigned to them. They can sneak, walk, run to their objectives.

+ Units won't fire unless they have proper line of sight.

- Vehicle path-finding can be better

Tetris DX for the Gameboy Color.

A bit of a safe pick, but this is a game I can't find much fault in. No superfluous 10 different modes, just quintessential Tetris at its best. Flawless controls. The one flaw that is glaring is the lack of the original's music.

If I dig back far enough I can think of at least a half dozen, but in "recent" times, probably SMG2. And yeah, I could still nit pick at it if I had to, but it's mainly an issue of trimming off a handful of lame stars. Extremely minor flaws aside, the game is absolutely stellar both in design and execution.

And these. I'd throw ALttP and SMW2 in there as well.

The Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past

Super Metroid

Donkey Kong Country Returns

Super Mario Galaxy 2

Batman Arkham City

It's insanely hard to find flaws in any of these. The first two have stood the test of time better than I've ever seen a game accomplish before, DKCR gives us absolutely everything anyone could ever dream for in a platformer, super Mario Galaxy has more inventive ideas in one package than any other game out there, and Arkham City is a jack of all trades that does everything at top tier levels. All are incredibly well polished.

Let's see...

Batman: Arkham Asylum (hey, it has a tighter sense of focus and atmosphere than the sequels and prequel and to this day is still my favorite in the series)

Super Mario World (my first game, still have the SNES cartridge and it still works :3)

Illusion of Gaia (only real flaw I can find is that the translation was meh, but other than that the game was great)

Devil May Cry (beating it on DMD for the first time was a major achievement in my gaming career)

Theres no such game as perfect because taste , nostalgia and fanboyism kicks in hard. So for something i consider 10/10 game for someone else might be 5/10 and vice versa.

So aside taste and nostalgia ill name few games that i really consider as perfect or as close as it gets but please take into consideration that all those games i played them on their respective release so the impact was strong.

  • Super Mario 64 -- 100/100
  • Half Life -- 100/100
  • GTA 3 -- 99/100
  • Diablo -- 98/100
  • World of Warcraft ( Vanilla ) -- 98/100
  • Street Fighter 2 ( Arcades ) -- 97/100
  • CastleVania : Symphony of the Night -- 97/100
  • Zelda : Link to the Past -- 97/100
  • Shadow of the Collosus -- 96/100

there's a good amount of games I'd consider "close to perfect," but if I had to choose one that was closest to perfection, or the one game I'd be the most comfortable with calling perfect, is Chrono Trigger. I really cannot think of anything that I had any kind of issue with, big or small. And that game has so many great moments to it as well for what is a relatively shorter JRPG as well.

Mechanics are similar to traditional RTS like Starcraft 1 and Company of Heroes (or old Command and Conquer games) but controls are way more responsive. AI is extremely smart and path finding is perfect. Grouping is extremely easy and there is no limitation like Starcraft 1, which means you can select your whole army at once. You should feel bad for not playing it. It's flawless execution.
