Games with inordinately long hype/development cycles that actually exceeded hype

So there have been a lot of games that get announced way too early, have people waiting for them for a very long time - a very long time - and then they release at last. But how many times do those games actually meet up to the years of hype? More rarely, how often do those games exceed the years of expectation?I submit to you my nomination: Persona 5 was first discussed by Atlus in 2009, months after Persona 4's release. It was officially mentioned as being in development for HD consoles in 2010, when Catherine was announced. In 2012, it was confirmed to have entered development. In 2013, it was officially announced for a 2014 release. In 2014, it was delayed to 2015, but a PS4 version was announced. In 2015, it was delayed to 2016, and this time we got no consolation price. In 2016, the Japanese release was set for September 15 2016, but the western release date was delayed to February 2017. The western release was delayed again to April 4 2017.Basically Atlus blueballed us for almost a decade. The hype and expectations were insane with series fans, and even from those who know nothing about the games because those who do love the games wouldn't shut up about them. Games that have development cycles this long and fractured and still come out either outright disappoint - like Duke Nukem Forever - or end up being good, but still underwhelming a lot of fans in a lot of ways - like Final Fantasy 15. I have never seen a game that was in development for so long, suffered so many delays, come out and actually exceed expectations in every way, with little to no criticism directed at it (it is the second highest rated game of this generation, behind only Zelda itself).That shit is insane to me.Do you have any other examples?

FFXV + The Last Guardian - both did fairly well - I think in general both were expected to do poorly with the long dev time.

Got the demo for this one in PC Gamer Magazine about 18 months before it was finally released after many delays. Well worth the wait!

Persona 5, Nioh and BOTW all get my votes. Honestly FF XV did as well. People were expecting absolute shit and got a pretty good game.

I agree. FFXV pissed a lot of people off. I don't know why, though, because I liked it. Didn't love it but there were dope parts like the overall graphics, the hunts, and riding chocobos the way it was meant to be done.
