Mighty Rare's Sea of Thieves is the only right answer. Well, at least until Halo 6 GOAT launches later this year. :P

BotW in my opinion.

I got as far as the Bloody Baron in TW3 and then kind of lost interest as it was all talking. BotW was a joy start to finish.

These two or the new God of War. But yeah all three of these game are Iconic. One could slighly even argue Mario Odyessy but that was just more like mario's next step in life.

So you're assuming on everyone's behalf that we all think game of the gen is between those two games?

Most stupid poll ever, and on here that's up against some stiff competition.

Neither of them

Its this game right there

It raise the bar. not only best game this gen but also one of the best game ever made.

witcher 3 is most overrated game of this gen. it was boring and have mediocre combat while Doom is excellent from start to finish.

BotW for me. That game was like crack to me where as I never really got into TW3.

Both superb games though.

Depends on what types of games you personally respond to. If you're into gameplay-first games that offer up the highest degree of freedom in practically any open-world game, allow for systemic, emergent, gameplay (the simplest, most mundane actions have tons of different possibilities in how you approach them), and have some unique mechanics (e.g. wall climbing, paragliding, shield surfing,) then you will enjoy BOTW more. If you are into games with more of an emphasis on storytelling/lore/worldbuilding/sidequests, then you will for sure enjoy W3 more. That game has a world filled with lore and attention to detail, and presents a very believable world with a strong sense of realism (e.g. the dev team taking all the food out of the houses of Velen's cabinets to help add to the believablilty of the famine there.)

Both have their pros and cons. The Witcher 3 is great from a story standpoint, but its movement/combat mechanics are not as deep, varied, and fine-tuned as BOTW, and BOTW has some really great gameplay that pushes the open-world envelope more, but its main quest and many of its sidequests are severely lacking from a story standpoint. I loved both, but I especially appreciated BOTW's refreshing focus on systemic gameplay and player agency, so that's where my vote goes.

Neither one. I liked Fallout 4 better than The Witcher 3. I don't have BotW. But, it's yet another third-person game. Chances are I'd be bored with it just like the others.

Honestly, it's your opinion. But these 2 games universally are seen as the top of this gen. In terms of GOTY awarded and overall reception. Mention another 2 games this gen with as many awards or reception?

I didn't even like BOTW. But it's just a fact.

I enjoyed both of those games a whole lot. Hard pressed to choose, but i think W3 edges out over BotW due to the story elements that zelda is lacking.

I always go back and forth with these two. Though now I pick BOTW for the potential replay value. You can literally just go off on your own and have a fun time in a world like that. The only thing I hate BOTW for is that it doesn't have a more linear story or dungeons.

BoTW. I enjoyed The Witcher's world and lore more, but Zelda was by far the better game.

Out of those two I pick TW3.

Honestly though it’s neither of them. Gen isn’t over yet and I’ve yet to play GOW, Death Stranding, Ghosts of Tsushima or TLOU 2 yet.

I'd probably vote Yakuza 0

HZD is better than both, but GoTG comes out April 20th or maybe TLoU2 will take it like TLoU took last generation. Either way it will be a Sony exclusive that wins it. No other developer is on their level at the moment.

Too much clunky menu and inventory management in Witcher... In contrast, Zelda handled this perfectly. Also, Zelda combat is better and it's exploration is better.... I suppose if you place a need for a dense story high on your list you'd give the Witcher points there....

.... But if we're talking better Video game? Botw by a country mile.

The Witcher 3. The combat is great, btw. Once you master it (I guess people don’t get to this point before they start whining) you’re rolling, dodging, parrying and cutting people up like a ninja. You want shitty combat in open world RPGs? Dragon Age and Skyrim are that way. ——>

Witcher 3. I went back and began a NG++ game; still amazing. Speaking of which, you can't normally do NG++ in The Witcher 3, but I was able to with mods. This is why mods are so important. :D

Game Informer ranked TW3 #10 in their top 300 games of all time list. I say again, out of 300 legendary titles, they put CD Projekt Red’s first massive open world game in the top ten. Guess what didn’t make it anywhere near the top ten? BotW. Or HZD.

Go ahead and hate.

With God of War out and The last of us 2 around the corner. I dont know

If i had to choose one of the two, i would go with Witcher 3. I liked the lore, characters, story, side questing, world, the EPIC soundtrack, decisions that were heavily affecting the story and all.

Neither would be my personal Game of the Generation, but between the two of them, Breath of the Wild was a much better game.

The Witcher 3 was a huge disappointment to me and I would not even call it a good game much less Game of the Generation. It had terrible combat, terrible movement controls, and felt like a chore to play.

If you force me to choose between those 2 Id go with BOTW. I use to be on The Witcher 3 bandwagon but my preferred game of the generation has changed my views about it. That game is Bloodborne, not only does it have better challenging focused gameplay but has the most interesting story out of those two.

This. And it goes to show you that game critics are hacks who have no idea what they're talking about. IGN 7, Gamespot 8? Anyone who rates this game less than a 9 is objectively wrong and shouldn't be reviewing games. I'd probably give it a 9.5 or 10. It's probably the best single player shooter since Half-Life 2, and a master class in how to reboot a dormant franchise. It stays true to its roots, but feels modern at the same time. It is impeccably well optimized to the point where it can even run on the Nintendo Switch. It also has one of the best soundtracks ever. DOOM is the only game this gen that I have gone back and played through multiple times.
