Do you have to have a 4k tv or monitor to view these files in their best state?

It would appear blown out if you view on a standard monitor or tv.

Does an IPS display get close? What's the deal there? I should research this more.

The HDR monitor simply shows the video correctly. Watching it on a standard display causes all of the gamma and color to be blown the bleep out. Its very vivid on an HDR TV but its not anything you haven't seen before.

I've generally heard that people notice a bigger difference going from Non-HDR to HDR of the same resolution than going from 1080p to 4k. There has to be some merit to that.

At this point though, the leaps in image quality we're making are a lot smaller than they were when we went from 480i to 1080p.

That's not even remotely true. The best TV under 50" wouldn't be a 43" first of all. And I wouldn't buy a 43" 4K TV unless you are sitting really close to it.

It is more noticeable than the 4K upgrade without a doubt and that is mainly due to the increase in overall vibrance and clarity but its not something that will blow you off your feet as many proponents try to sell it as. Its great but its not "Holy motha of god" great.

That was a major jump. The newer jump are indeed much smaller.

800d was recognized as the best TV for gaming under 50 inch.. There are a ton of threads about it... There is no TV thats as good given the price + 10 bit + Wide color etc etc.... The 43 is noted for deeper blacks than the larger version due to VA rather than IPS. The 2017 is noted for less deeper blacks.... I sit 3 feet from it since its amazing as a PC monitor as well ...

The 43" got acclaim because it used VA, while the 49" used IPS. When doing HDR gaming it didn't get a ton of lag either like many other TVs did. For the price it's a damn good TV but it doesn't do HDR well. Though I guess it doesn't matter since no TV does until you get to more expensive/larger sets or OLED. HDR and other methods are still in their infancy too so it'll still be another year or two before it really takes off. Also it's PWM/flicker free, so it's really nice as a PC monitor. Only other option for that would be OLED. If you're looking for something under 50" (come on 49" is no different) then there's nothing better especially for gaming.

Watching HDR stuff on a non-HDR display will just make it dulled out and cold btw, not blown-out. Forza 7 footage still looks great on my 4k monitor, just dull.

If you have an HDR 4K TV, what's easiest way to watch this, using the TV's own browser, or through the Xbox One S ?

If anything, I believe HDR is understated.

4k is just an increase in resolution. As far as resolution increases goes, we're definitely seeing diminished returns past 1080P. 1080P Blu-Rays look stellar on my 65" 4k TV. In games, 4k does help clean up aliasing a bit and the sharpness helps, but it's pretty much what you would expect from a resolution jump.

So while I'd argue 1080P still holds up today, SDR looks pretty flat compared to HDR. While the quality of the experience is up to how the HDR mastering is done (similar to 4k), HDR is much more of a treat to watch than SDR. I'd rather watch something in 1080P HDR than 4k SDR.

Contrast is one of the most important things in IQ and HDR brings contrast into a whole new ballpark.

I just copied both video files to a usb flash drive and plugged it to the TV. Also make sure HDR is enabled on your TV...some TVs require you to do that in the settings.

Holy shit two, that's awesome!!!

Mine is the "C"(curved screen model). I never used to care much for the curved models, but now I have one I love it.

Forza 7 on Xbox One X with HDR is gonna be pretty cool.

I thought The Last Night was going to look sick on a 4K TV with HDR, even if it's a pixel-art heavy indie game. I'm guessing the new Ori game is going to be an HDR visual feast as well.

Loading Video...

Anyhow, was at the store the other day, saw one of those Samsung QLED, OMG, beautiful, can't wait for that standard to come down in price in a few years. I'll get me a decent 4K HDTV with HDR to hold me over until then. Other than gaming needs, I see no need for someone to get anything that beastly for the time being. Cable in my area is still highly compressed standard HD and the internet infrastructure isn't there for streaming options because of bandwidth caps. And I really don't feel like building up a physical disc movie collection anymore.

TV's have such high latency and low hz. I'm still waiting for a good 2k HDR ultrawide monitor that can handle 100+hz without weird sync restrictions.

Moving to that from 1080p 60hz would be, I think, a significant step. As an upgrade you'd have a bigger size monitor with wider field of view, despite that you'd have slightly more pixels per inch, more hz (I can notice 60 to 100) and HDR support. I think that would be enough to justify a new screen. But anything that gets close to those specs is ultra expensive.

You forgot the mandatory XBL fees for online, and you forgot that fact many people simply upgrade their PC rather than buying everything from scratch every 4 years. Even then, $800 for a new pc isn't too far off from $700 (4 years of XB + XBL).

PC is the better product. $700 a mini-gen for 30 fps and only 2 True 4k games is non feasible. You're paying nearly just as much for far less.

Forza 7 and the XBoneX are going to justify our purchases, those of us that spent more money on a home theater than most people spend on a car. I haven't flipped on my launch XBone since maybe December lol, but I'm stoked for the X. Finally a console and game deserving of the Elite controller.

Not bad. $100 for a far superior product. Sounds like an excellent deal.

Also I'm glad you won't even touch on the fact that people who simply upgrade laugh at both of these parties.

$43.42 for 12 month Xbox Live Gold.

Total cost: $672.68 (X1X's $499 + 4 years x $43.42)

Exactly. I'd rather pay around 800 for a far superior product than around 700.

Then we have upgrading, which blows both out of the water for people who already own Rigs.

Not to mention, upgrading is a huge factor and better than both of the above.

@ttboy: I bought a LG OLED not long ago. Incredible picture. It can't wait for true 4K gaming on Xbox One X!

I'd love the LG Wallpaper but I cannot justify the expense. I may build a gaming room just for the XBox X. I'm not sure what 65 inch to put in there yet. I already have 4 TVs so one more won't hurt :P......

When you can find a 1070/1080 for cheap let me know.

Other than that, your butthurt is showing.
