For those upgrading GPUs this Christmas Season, are you going AMD or anti consumer Nvidia?

I remember late last year around the time of the Holiday sales, you could get 1080 level performance for about $500. This included the GTX 1080 and Vega 64 cards. This was right before the crypto mining crazy that drove prices through the roof.

Last year I was thinking about it but I said no, when Nvidia releases their new cards you will get a massive amount of performance at the $500 price point. Well, Nvidia released their new cards.

This year you can still get 1080 level performance for around $500. The new RTX 2070 cards can be found for $500. If you are ok with last years cards you can get a 1080 or Vega 64 for around $450. To me that is pathetic. How can you go from 1080 performance for $500 last year(which wasn't that good because the same was true a year before that), to the same thing this year even with the launch of a new generation of Nvidia cards?

The only cards that I have seen that are really good deals are the Vega 56 and 1070 ti cards. I have seen the 1070 ti for $350 and the Vega 56 for $330, both on good sales.

I think the Vegas 56 for $330 is a great deal and it gives you close to 1080 performance for $170 less than last year. Not too bad for value hunters. I would eliminate the GTX 1070 ti because who wants to support an anti consumer company like Nvidia?

Regarding the 590 who knows what that will bring. However, I don't see it really outperforming a Vega 56 for less than $330. I'm sure it will be a good product but I think the smart shoppers will be picking up Vega 56 cards before they run out.

Who's upgrading GPU this Christmas season? What cards are you eyeing?

The only card I will be buying this Christmas will have a cartoon Santa on the front and feature the word 'Merry' somewhere.

No reason to upgrade.

My 1070 does just fine and the RTX cards don’t do new stuff well enough.

Recently upgraded to RTX 2080 Ti. AMD is not even an option for me as they are not competing in the high end GPU market.

I hope to get in through a friend who has Premier, but I still have no idea how that "giving a friend 10hrs of playtime" works.

Never heard of the 10 hour friend thing. I know in BF1 they had the premium friends thing where friends could play the premium maps if they were playing with their buddies who had premium. I am so happy that they got rid of premium. Everyone will have access to all maps. :)

The playerbase being split has been a problem for the franchise for a while now, so I'm glad they got rid of it too.

And heck, I gotta applaud them for the job they did with the cosmetics. As far as I can tell they kept everything pretty consistent with actual soldier-gear of the time and got rid of all the whacky over the top stuff nobody wanted (prostethic arms, katanas, ...)

This was announced just recently but: people that get Origin Premier will be able to invite some of their friends for 10 hours of Battlefield V, kind of like how Origin Access works where you get ten hours of a new game.

Basically this! I don't really care about anything other than performance, even we all know Nvidia is shady. And going AMD would be a significant downgrade from my current GPU which I cannot afford to do!

Just bought a new PC basically, just waiting for the parts to come in.

Went with 2080 TI and 8700K.

I prefer hyperthreading over the 9700k's 8 core with no hyperthreading.

lol at anyone dumb enough to waste money on an RTX

Get a used 1070 or 8GB RX 580. That gets you into the same ballpark of performance as the big boy cards for $180-$250. Spending any more than that simply doesn't make sense.

By the time ray tracing is a mainstream feature there will faster and cheaper cards.

Also trying to game at 4K is a hilarious waste of money. QHD (1440p) is the sweet spot.

Lol for what, to play indie games or red dead redemption 2... oh wait.

I'm buying the Switch instead with 5 games and an extra controller.

I agree with this. Even though I mostly game at 4K it's quite wasteful. The real sweet spot of PC gaming is 1440p.

RDR2 will come out on PC within a year or two. Because the PS4 and XB1 use AMD x86 hardware, it is trivially easy to port games. Rockstar also made a crapton of money on the PC version of GTA V. They would be crazy not to port it.

My 1070 is doing just fine so I have no intention to upgrade atm. When the time comes I do hope AMD will have something competitive in the high end range since I have a freesync monitor. Right now they're not even an option...

I had a 1080 and was struggling to get 60 fps in some newer games at 3440x1440p. I even had to turn down settings to get close to 60. Many options were on high instead of ultra in the new Tomb Raider, for example. Now I'm getting 80+ fps on ultra in every single game at that resolution on a 2080 Ti. Tell me again that I should have downgraded to a 1070 instead of getting this 2080 Ti.

I'll wait for AMD's new GPUs since I am already running a Vega. RTX is overpriced for a minor upgrade and it was clearly released out of fear of what AMD has next. That being said, the release of the 20 series has made the 10 series cards an even better value. If you're looking to get a new GPU, you can pick up a Vega 56 or a 1070ti for 350 USD right now - both fantastic cards.

You upgraded from a 1080 and I upgraded from a 1080 Ti for a reason.

You bought the wrong monitor. Ultrawides and 4K are a bad idea until cards get much more powerful. 2560x1440 is the sweet spot right now.

You bought a monitor that is ridiculously hard to drive and ends up with black bars on the sides in a lot of stuff not designed for ultrawides. Then you bought a stupidly overpriced video card. You wasted a ton of money with poor buying decisions.

Well if he's getting 80+ fps on every game and he was struggling with 60 on a 1080 then HIS sweet spot is 3440x1440p. It's funny how you're trying to tell others how and what resolution and video card they should have.

Well if he's getting 80+ fps on every game and he was struggling with 60 on a 1080 then HIS sweet spot is 3440x1440p. It's funny how you're trying to tell others how and what resolution and video card they should have.

It's cool if you like wasting money. People like the guy I criticized are why people get the mistaken impression PC gaming is expensive when it doesn't have to be.

Recently upgraded to RTX 2080 Ti. AMD is not even an option for me as they are not competing in the high end GPU market.

Yeah, if I am only buying one video card every five+ years, it is going to be the best.

Also, AMD just released (or is soon to release) a new 7 nm video card, and apparently they are not making a consumer/game version of it, as it is for workstations/ai/etc. That, to me, is anti-consumer. I have no doubt that when the Nvidia 7 nm cards come, they will be out for consumers.

lol at anyone dumb enough to waste money on an RTX

Get a used 1070 or 8GB RX 580. That gets you into the same ballpark of performance as the big boy cards for $180-$250. Spending any more than that simply doesn't make sense.

By the time ray tracing is a mainstream feature there will faster and cheaper cards.

Subjective, it's a waste to you but not to him. Sounds like he's very satisfied and that's what matters, not what some random says in SWs.

That's BS. PC gaming is as expensive as you want it to be and most people understand that. Someone purchasing an expensive video card and monitor has no bearing on what others perceive price wise when it comes to computers.

I use to be a diehard AMD/ATI guy. But I switched to Intel in 2012 with the i5 3570k. And switched to Nvidia in 2013 with gtx 770. The plan was to get the xx70 card when each new series released, so I went from the 770 to 970 then to the 1070. I also upgraded to the i7 7700k at the beginning of 2017.

So I was wanting to get the 2070, but for the price and the performance, it's just ridiculous. I'd like to have a 2080, but not for the price. Considering the performance jump of previous gens the 2080ti should have been named the 2080 for $549...the 2080 should've been the 2070 for $400...and the 2070 should be the 2060 priced at or below $300.

Because of all this, I have no idea when I'll upgrade. I've been tempted to upgrade to ryzen for my cpu, but as far as gpu, I just cant justify these kinds of prices.

@BassMan Now he's telling us what monitors to buy. Hilarious.

You bought a monitor that is ridiculously hard to drive and ends up with black bars on the sides in a lot of stuff not designed for ultrawides. Then you bought a stupidly overpriced video card. You wasted a ton of money with poor buying decisions.

You do realize almost every single game supports ultrawide now-a-days, right? There were 2 games that didn't recently. 2. Monster Hunter World, and Fallout 76, although apparently, Fallout 76 might be getting it.

Every single other game that has come out recently or is out supports it, especially first person shooters where it matters. Ring of Elysium, PUBG, Hunt: Showdown, BF5, Black Ops 4, Hitman 2, Witcher 3, every Tomb Raider game, World War 3, Insurgency Sandstorm, Rainbow Six Siege, AC Odyssey, AC Origins, Ghost Recon Wildlands, Far Cry 5, Far Cry 4, Kingdom Come Deliverance, Shadow of War, Arkham Knight, Final Fantasy 15, Fallout 4 with mods, Skyrim with mods, and the list goes on and on and on. Not only that, but Flawless widescreen is an application that adds ultrawide support to many older games that don't support it.

Yes, I "wasted" a ton of money that I bought from working a J O B. Know what else I wasted my money on? A 9900k with a tricked out RGB case to go along with everything.

And you know what? I'd do it all over again if I had to. :P

Take your sour grapes to another patch, because they aren't effective here. Lol

Fallout 76 did state 21:9 is coming but at a later date; the only issue is no FOV change...lol.

Nice upgrades man!

I'm about to go ahead and upgrade my PC as well and pick up a 2080 Ti & i9-9900K as well! Probably sell the Xbox One X...it was cool playing and testing the waters with Red Dead Redemption 2 but damn it would be so much better on PC...I'm stupid for outright buying the Xbox One X to play this. I don't even want to progress further in the game and rather just wait for the PC version. Should have listened to @R4gn4r0k when he warned me...lmao.
