warning:I am a critic

Fallout 3 is a pretty good game. It did a lot of things well, but as I type this I can't help but feel that it needed more polish.

The biggest problem that this game was it's inability to captivate me into the lore and story. It didn't make me really careabout my characters. Heck, I didn't really care to much about my own character. I mean, let's take for example the girl whom you meet at the beginning of the game. I really thought they were going to expand on love kind of love story with her... but they don't. Even if they did continue it in an expansion, it's too late -- I don't care about her when F3 comes to an end.

Do my actions really impact the world? Slightly, but not noticably. Unless of course, you mean the random annoyances of stangers walking up to you and offering you an item. I want more. I want to see something more dramatic, so I care. I want to feel like the world got betterbecause of what I did. This is what the creators should have been striving for.

At the end of the day, I felt that while F3 was a good attempt at an open world game; it lacked the experience I would have hoped for. In fact, I'm suprised to say that many of the F1 and F2 fans were right... the predecessors made you feel, more a part of an organic world, then this one did. Every more suprising I say this... but the developers could learn a lot by drawning from Fable 2 -- granted the game is smaller in scale, the mechanics it puts forth, make you feel more engaged.

My last gripe... what is up with the lack of weapon and armor. I think I've played 3/4 of the game with the same weapons and armor. It's kinda lame. I want to be constantly upgrading, and noticably feeling myself get stronger.

I think it's underrated. Easily the best game of 2008 for me. If I get bored -- I simply make new content with the GECK.

Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. In the end, it all comes down to personal preference. Personally I loved Fallout 3.

I thought it was one of the best WRPGs this gen. Also, mods.

Also, what sick person would want a love sideline with that girl in the beginning, that's even worse than picking Ashley over the blue chick in Mass Effect.

The thing is, I don't know of any mods that make it significantly better. Most of them just add a little bit to it. I never said a love sideline... it's an example of how they start a story arch, then abandon it, instead of tying it into the story.

Well let's get something out quick: The story was horrible. You're looking for your dad find him then a bunch of stupid crap happens. Overall that part was the biggest letdown for me. I had 0 incentive to finish the mian quest. The sidequests are really good though, each is a little different and the rewards are cool. The weapons and armour are good but simply there isn't much variety until the very end. Once you get Vengance or the alien blaster the game becomes fun again. Overall I'd give it an 8.5

it was a good game, but it wasn't a very good "Role" playing game... story was stupid and as you said I also didn't care for any characters... SPOILER ALERT!!!: was i supposed to care that the president of the enclave was a robot? It felt like Bethesda was trying to 1-up the master in FO1 and it was just to... dumb... END SPOLER!!! the enclave in general felt like bethesda couldn't think of a main bad guy themselves so they just borrowed those cool looking dudes from FO2, same with the BOS why couldn't they just come up with a East coast faction with no relation without stomping all over the storyline of the first game... FO1BOS=jerks that send you into a big radioactive hole to die FO3BOS=Futuristic knights in shining amour roaming the wasteland for people to save! FO3 WAS NOT a bad game, it was just lacking many of the great things from FO1-FO2.

Depends how you play it i guess. I play it in a mindset of a lone man trying to survive and helping others as i go along, that just how i feel when im playing. It works because the atmosphere in the game is great, side quests, main quests, combat, and exploration all work out as well. First time i played i was focusing more on the main story, and it was good but not amazing, like you said there wasnt a big sense of accomplishment, i didnt feel like i did any good.

I am playing through it again though and it is better when you focus more on just wandering through the wasteland, for example helping resuce the lost people form big town, it actually felt terrifying making my way through the police HQ amongst a bunch of dead bodies, bones, and having to take out super mutants, and finally finding the surviors, escorting them both back safley. Just was awesome. Also, dont fast travel unless you dont plan on playing for awhile. If you have time, just walk everywhere and explore places you find along the way. The past fallouts were great because it gave you freedom and showed the recoil of your actions, while this game gives you freedom, but doesnt show that you've done anything to the world as a whole. Great game, but still could have been better if it was basically everything from the old fallout games, in first person, and with all the good things form this game such as VATS.

Blue-Sky

Huh? I agree with The Witcher, but Oblivion was one of the worst RPGs of the gen. :|
Anyway, imo: The Witcher, NWN2: Mask of the Betrayer, King's Bounty, (and arguably) NWN2, Gothic 3 and Mass Effect were all better RPGs (and I'm probably forgetting a few - Drakensang and others).

Besides, your question is a bit pointless. This gen has been pretty terrible for RPGs, and we should be comparing Fallout 3 to Fallout 1 and 2 - two of the best RPGs of all time (in which case, yes, it is highly overrated).

"Slightly overrated"? Understatement of the century.

I still don't have the slightest idea how that game got a 9 here. I guess in GS, bad writing, unbalanced and shallow roleplaying, poor coding and a poor main quest makes for a "superb" RPG.

No. You have to find him on your own. You can go through the entire game without him, and there is really no indication of him even existing. Kind of silly, if you ask me. BTW, its north of megaton

Fallout 3 is a complete disappointment compared to Oblivion. I loved Oblivion there is just so much to do with Shivering Isles, KotN, guild quests, main quests, side quests, area, and plenty of oblivion gates to clear. I mean I have played Oblivion for over 100 hrs and feel like I have just scratched the surface whereas I beat Fallout3 in 40hrs and don't really feel like I missed that much or have that much more to find that is worthwhile. I thought Oblivion had deeper combat with more weapons, range weapons + melee weapons, more armor, and magic. I also thought that the writing in Oblivion is better than the writing in Fallout3 (Dark Brotherhood > all fallout stories) . There was also more enemy types in Oblivion and I could go on and on but basically I just felt that Oblivion had so much more stuff available to you while Fallout3 seemed rushed.

Um, did we play the same game because the last time I checked I got a locker full of weapons and a workbench that MAKES them. And when I first stepped out of vault 101, I wasn't able to punch a super mutants head off.

I hate to say this to people, but are you playing the game correctly? You don't feel yourself getting stronger? I'm at the level 20 cap and the only thing that even gives me pause is those friggin deathclaws.

It was a very good game but not really the kind of classic you might expect based on the critical reception. For me the fallout universe made up for many of its flaws, but I'm not sure if I'd call it overrated, it depends what you compare it to. Is it really better than all the old fallouts, planescape etc. ..propably not. But It seems this gen the scores and hype for games has been pumped up a notch so in that sense it's about where it should be imo.

SquatsAreAwesom

I can't speak for your sense of involvement in the game. I just know that I disagree with you. I felt more ownership of the gaming universe with Fallout 3 mostly because of the freedom it afforded me while Fable 2 was a much more scripted and directed experience.

Honestly, having replayed Fallout 1 and 2 just before Fallout 3, I didn't feel they did any better of a job of making me feel invested in the setting.

Lack of weapons and armor? There were plenty of weapons and armor in the game. I was constantly scavenging off of fallen enemies and upgrading. It was only near the end of the game when I got to the power armor that I stopped scavenging for armor. Between scavenging and the constant repairs, that wasn't enough micromanagement for you? I think the game struck a good balance with variety and your interaction with your inventory. I have no problems there. You also have to understand that your own pace through the game dictates how quickly you gain access to good weapons/armor.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.

I'd say that The Witcher, Mass Effect, and NWN2 (dunno exactly what generation this should be considered from) are better than Fallout 3. IMO it's a good game (albeit hella overrated like Oblivion), but a mediocre Fallout game. 1 & 2 were definitely better. I wonder how Fallout: New Vegas will do with Obsidian(!!) at the head?

there were no bosses in fallout 3

what kind of game doesnt have bosses?

if a game doesnt have boss fights it shouldnt be considered a game or a finished game

all you do is fight enclave and giants

there was one super giant mutant near the radio station but the lion clan defeated it for you*which was dumb*

Fallout 3 is an awesome game and almost as immersive as Oblivion. That is for me and probably a matter of opion for the person playing them.

Depends on if you prefer future or past for your history.

My complaint with Fallout3 was that the protagonist had no soul - no action you take will have any affect on him/her. They go merrily on their way evil or good.

merrily is a poor choice of words too as my character showed little notion of emotion.

I still don't have the slightest idea how that game got a 9 here. I guess in GS, bad writing, unbalanced and shallow roleplaying, poor coding and a poor main quest makes for a "superb" RPG.

it got a 9 because of the "bethesda" logo plastered on the front of the cover,in other words a extremely hyped game made by a big time mainstream developer.no other game whould've gotten away with same flaws,if it was a smaller team that made fallout 3,Kevin Van Tool wouldn't even hesitate to give this game a 7.5.

I guess even fellow peers (referencing GDC) were fooled? Please it's laughable that people think an entire industry was brainwashed into thinking the game was good/great. Time to loosen up the tin foil caps, they might be cutting into the blood circulation. :|

when did I ever say it was some conspiracy?...nice strawman attempt though.

everyone knows bigger companies can get away with flaws, yet smaller companies will be torn to shreds for same flaws..not just games..in general..welcome to the real world.

you deny the bugs and performance problems in fallout 3?

OR maybe it's because they happen to think that Fallout 3 is awesome and that the flaws are not game-breaking? I mean just because YOU and the other guy thinks that Fallout 3 is overated, itdoesn't mean that your guy's OPINIONS are what the majority thinks about Fallout 3. Just saying.

I think it's underrated. Easily the best game of 2008 for me. If I get bored -- I simply make new content with the GECK.Stevo_the_gamer
My GOTY as well. Awesome, imo.
