warning:I am a critic
Fallout 3 is a pretty good game. It did a lot of things well, but as I type this I can't help but feel that it needed more polish.
The biggest problem that this game was it's inability to captivate me into the lore and story. It didn't make me really careabout my characters. Heck, I didn't really care to much about my own character. I mean, let's take for example the girl whom you meet at the beginning of the game. I really thought they were going to expand on love kind of love story with her... but they don't. Even if they did continue it in an expansion, it's too late -- I don't care about her when F3 comes to an end.
Do my actions really impact the world? Slightly, but not noticably. Unless of course, you mean the random annoyances of stangers walking up to you and offering you an item. I want more. I want to see something more dramatic, so I care. I want to feel like the world got betterbecause of what I did. This is what the creators should have been striving for.
At the end of the day, I felt that while F3 was a good attempt at an open world game; it lacked the experience I would have hoped for. In fact, I'm suprised to say that many of the F1 and F2 fans were right... the predecessors made you feel, more a part of an organic world, then this one did. Every more suprising I say this... but the developers could learn a lot by drawning from Fable 2 -- granted the game is smaller in scale, the mechanics it puts forth, make you feel more engaged.
My last gripe... what is up with the lack of weapon and armor. I think I've played 3/4 of the game with the same weapons and armor. It's kinda lame. I want to be constantly upgrading, and noticably feeling myself get stronger.
