Bought a Dreamcast today from a local game store and the thing won't spin the discs so I can't use it until I get it fixed tomorrow.
Have any of you had unfortunate experiences with systems being dead on arrival?

Don't know if this counts, but when I first ordered my Vita off Amazon India, they sent me a box with nothing but manuals inside. Had to wait another three-four days for the actual system to arrive after that.
A friend of mine ordered a brand new $1000 processor a few years back and only got the box lol.
Sounds so unlikely really, but Amazon just sent him another one, no questions asked, which was really cool.

This exact same thing happened with me when I bought a Vita off Amazon (well, at least I got manuals with the box)
My first Xbox 360 couldn't play Forza 3 or Halo ODST on the day I got it.
So I returned it the next day and got a new bundle.

Yeah it sucks when this stuff happens, but that's some bad ass customer service though.
Like recently when I went through my PSTV ordeal. Twice I ordered and twice it never came, but they still refunded me each time with no hassle, even when UPS said the package had been delivered.
Oh and I actually do have a console example, almost forgot.
Back when I bought my first launch PS3, the colors all rendered inverted. Basically, every game looked like this.
Thing is, I had to deal with some know-it-all Walmart asshole. When I described the issue, dude tried to tell me I hooked up the system wrong. Started treating me like an idiot and I was really losing my patience. I had tried multiple HDMI cables on multiple TV sets, it's not like I wanted to return the thing if it worked. Finally I got a manager to put dude in his place and give me a fucking exchange.

Yeah, I was expecting a hell lot of hassle and angry phone calls and/or emails on my part lol. I was surprised at how neatly and quickly the problem was sorted out.
However, here in India, there's been plenty of reports recently of Amazon employees stealing the contents of shipments and shipping empty boxes instead, so there's a large possibility that Amazon did what they did in my case (and I'm assuming several others) to keep the bad press to a minimum. Either way, I was pretty satisfied with how they handled the situation.
Oh, and you did finally get a PSTV, right? Third time lucky? :P
@khoofia_pika:
Haha, yeah man, FINALLY. I ended up just going to Walmart and buying the damn thing in person, got tired of the online retailer fails. Had to spend a bit more, but at least I got it. I plan on starting P4G in the next couple of weeks.
None what so ever. Well not sure if this counts but I guess my Sega Game Gear kinda counts as dead on arrival in someways, play it for about 2/3 hours and boom, it was dead. I couldn't figure out what happen until I notice it needs new batteries and I didn't know that thing eats up batteries like a hungry hippo lol. All this happen back in 1995.
No, closest to that I had was my PS4 came with a non-working HDMI cord. Had it replaced(no charge) and was good to go.

Oh, P4G, awesome. :D It's gonna be worth it, trust me. Maybe not as much as an over-excitable idiot such as @charizard1605 would tell you, but still worth it.
@khoofia_pika: boy, that's a comforting purchase. Lol...
Round about $250 for a bunch of instruction manuals, tell me about it :P
Not yet, the NX hasn't released yet.
Man, at least read the OP first before you start making attempts at clever jokes. Smh
thankfully no
by "dead on arrival" I thought maybe you meant one of those systems that pretty much bombed right away like 3DO or Jaguar or CD-i or Virtual Boy, then I saw you said Dreamcast thinking "that makes sense" then I saw you meant "oh he means it wasn't working properly" =P

Yeah my first Ps1 but i took it back the next day and got a replacement.
what was odd is that the replacement i got had a different connection for the TV cable.
no real Drama though, i had about 5 of them fail on me but i don't care it's still the greatest console ever made in my opinion.
the only really annoying part was changing disks when i had to put the damn things upside down.
Can you fix dreamcasts?

You can yeah.
@lamprey263: Sorry the title was confusing :(
not your fault, you were being literal, we're always speaking in hyperbole here
My PSP square button did not work out of the box
Imagine playing God of War on that System
Nope. Never had a system brick on me either.
I had a fat PS3 for 5 years and then bought a super slim. I had two PS3's in the house but then my brother left so I gave the Phat PS3 to a friend and couple months later he told me it stopped working...
But I as far as my personal experience with console I had in my possession, all worked properly and long lasting.
When I was like 16-17 my mom smashed my PSP. Thats the only one that physically broke, but not because of me or of its own.
If i remember correctly i think it was called the Sega Mega.. it worked for a day and stopped working the next day lol
i hope youre taking it back from the place you bought it to get fixed?
If not maybe you should go back and exchange it for another one / Get a refund. Don't do nothing and let them get away with selling used (im assuming its used cuz its a dreamcast) stuff that doesn't work.

Took it back today and got another one alongside a free Crazy Taxi, should be fun times.
When my 40GB Phat PS3 died I replaced it with a 120GB PS3 Slim. Right out of the box the damn thing wouldn't power on. The LED came on, there was some sizzle and a pop. Then it just smelled like burnt electronics. So back to Best Buy it went.
Also my neighbor had a 250GB Slim PS3 he bought off of Amazon come out of the box sort of DOA. It wouldn't read any games or BD discs. More broken than DOA, but still.
PC/consoles? Nope. The closest I would have to any dead hardware would be a Sony HiFi component system that got stuck in headphones mode within two days of buying it. That was back in the mid-1990's.
Yes when the PlayStation 3 Superslim console launched I bought one. It died on me. 21 days after arrival. But Sony replaced it without any difficulties. First time ever a system died on me brand new out of the box.
