Naught Dog (Uncharted, Last of Us), Guerilla Games (Killzone, Horizon) Santa Monica studio (God of War). Japan Studio (Trico), Sucker Punch (inFAMOUS), Sony Bend (Days Gone), Polyphony Digital (Gran Turismo), Media Molecule (Little Big Planet, Dreams), San Diego Studio (MLB The Show).

I would say Nintendo does platformers really well. And Zelda goes unmatched. But overall, Sony has the best portfolio. More diverse library and they take more risk. What say you, SW?

Sony's first party is very weak. Same with Microsoft. Nintendo is the only first party worth mentioning so they win by default. Sony has some great 3rd party exclusives though.

I never cared much for Nintendo exclusives (except Super Metroid), so it's a yes for me.

There's nothing in Sony's Library of Games that gives off the same amount of Hype that Nintendo games give off.

They made a "Smash Bros." and Hardly anyone cared about it.

Not to undermine Sony and their Track Record right now because they have some REALLY well made games as you have stated, and one of my favorite games of all time is a Playstation Exclusive (Uncharted 2), but You gotta be pretty blind to think Sony's IPs have any standing power against Nintendo's IPs which have continually showed to have stood the test of time.

Nintendo does. But Sony makes up for it with their 2nd/3rd party exclusive lineup.

Yeah, at this point I'd put them above both the other first parties based on both quantity and quality.

@SolidGame_basic: yeah that's the gist of it. Nintendo is only just now taking risks with Splatoon (which proved to be successful) and Arms (yet to be proven).

But Sony is doing phenomenal making good games out of risks and it's largely due to them not having a Legacy like Nintendo does with its IPs.

Maybe before, but now all of sony's first party are making basically just 3rd person "cinematic" action adventure games.

Uncharted, TLOU, Horizon, GOW 4, Days Gone. Hell, going by Sly -> Infamous -> Infamous SS, SP is next.

MM is still different, but i'm betting they're closed next year.

San Diego and Polyphony just make MLB and GT.

I mean, Ninty does rehash ALOT, but Splatoon and Arms are different from the usual, minus the cartoony artstyle.

Risk taking does not make it better. Or are Nintendo's consoles better than Sony's by that metric?

The highest selling Zelda game is 8.85 million.

I largely assumed he meant that Sony is constantly making or supporting new IPs rather then falling back on to their older IPs.

Nintendo will continually make Marios and Zeldas, but Sony is not likely to make more Uncharteds or God of Wars.

@deadline-zero0: Naughty Dog is moving on from Uncharted. Guerilla Games made a game that was in a completely different universe and genre. God of War is a reboot with a different mythology. Days Gone is another new IP. Dreams is a high concept new ip. Sony definitely encourages their developers to branch out and do something new.

people seem to have the idea that zelda a major sales titan.

here's the list

1992SNESThe Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past4.61
1993GBThe Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening3.83

2001GBCThe Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons/Ages3.98
2003GCThe Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker4.43
2004GCThe Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures0.81
2004GBAThe Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap1.76
2006Wii
GC
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess8.58

Wii: 7.26
GC: 1.32

2007DSThe Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass4.76
2009DSThe Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks2.98
2011WiiThe Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword3.67
20133DSThe Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds2.90
20153DSThe Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes

1.14

Badically, only 3 games (Original, ocarina and Twilight) have sold over 5 million units. Those are lifetime, btw.

That's not bad, but they're not selling 4-5 million out of the gate with 3-5m months/years after.

Two things:

  • Because none of Sony's IPs has the prestige or commercial appeal of Nintendo's more successful properties
  • Nintendo constantly experiments within its existing IP. Sony studios may branch out and do new IPs, but functionally, what's the point of having three first person shooters, like SOCOM, Resistance, and Killzone? What is the point of Days Gone when The Last of Us exists? Sony makes new IP in name most of the time- whereas Nintendo might stick to existing IP, but it experiments with things within that IP drastically each time

Also, classic franchises like Gran Turismo and God of War are very successful.

And now tlou 2. then 3, then 4. Then another 3rd person action etc type game

GOW aping of tlou isn't risky. How many pure hack and slash games are out there today in the aaa market?

Days gone? really?

Look i'm not saying they're bad games but where's teh diversity?

where's the frist person shooters, the racers, the fighters, the horror games, the quirky games like Buzz, the multiplayer centric titles?

Sony used to have first party devs doing some of this stuff, but now it's mostly this stuff.

they basically use third party marketing deals and "console exclusives" now.

Cream Nintendo in terms of what?

Nintendo has at least six franchises that sell more than Uncharted and Last of Us routinely, at least four franchises that match or exceed the critical reception of Uncharted and The Last of Us, and about a dozen more franchises that have far more mainstream penetration and awareness than Uncharted, God of War, The Last of Us, or any other Sony property you want to name.

So what are you talking about?

BotW will probably reach 5 million, but yeah, that might be where it stops. Who knows. No one has ever played up its sales potential, that's for sure. Or no one sensible, at any rate.

???

  • Mario, Mario Kart, Smash Bros., Pokemon, Animal Crossing, and Wii are all franchises that routinely and consistently outsell Uncharted and The Last of Us
  • Zelda, Mario, Metroid, and Smash Bros. are all franchises that rival or exceed the critical reception of Uncharted or The Last of Us
  • I don't even think I need to list Nintendo's franchises' mainstream recognition. Even B and C tier properties like Kirby and Star Fox are recognized by the public

I'm not pulling any facts out of anywhere. It sounds like you don't actually have much of an argument, and are far more interested in just posting fluff to defect.

I honestly find it sad that both ms and nintendo have they're own IP owned fighting game (KI, SSB), arcade racer (FH, MK), strategy (pikmin, HW) and online shooter (Halo, Splatoon) while sony has none.

You used to invest in this shit Sony.

Personally, Sony rarely makes great games and, even when they do, none have flown as high as the games nintendo manages to make every generation.

"Because none of Sony's IPs has the prestige or commercial appeal of Nintendo's more successful properties"

That's complete fanboy nonsense. What new IPs from Nintendo have accomplished the same level of success and critical praise as Uncharted or Last of Us in recent times? You seem to have forgotten what this conversation was about.

So Days gone is already heralded?

When Halo 5 comes in at 8/10 it was the end of the world. The last GoW was Ascension and its generally shit on here, but now all is good?

Gran Turismo has been topped more than a Christmas tree.

Dreams? Again, we're heralding this already?

KZ2 and Horizon suddenly make GG a top tier studio when the rest of their outings aren't top tier?

Last is MLB? A sports game? So if its exclusive its all good but otherwise I see "LOL sports games" when it comes to Fifa, Madden, NHL?

KZ2 wasn't even that good. It was much better than the first one and had pretty amazing graphics. Only thing it had going for it was the feel of the weight behind your movements and the environments. Halo 3 shat all over it.

Nintendo has not been 'horrible' with new IP, especially not in the last seven years.
