Poll Does playing a game at stable 30 fps bother you? (91 votes)

Yes, I cannot tolerate 30 fps! 26%
I'm ok with it, but prefer better. 38%
It doesn't bother me at all. 35%

I've been playing Watch Dogs Legion on PS5, and this game is beautiful! It also features that fancy ray tracing some people be fawning about. But the game only allows 30fps! Having been spoiled with the PS5, I thought maybe it would be a problem. But actually, my eyes adjusted to it and its fine. I enjoy the game! So far, playing at stable 30fps is not bad. How about you, SW? Does playing a game at stable 30 fps bother you?

I prefer 60 but being 30 isn't a deal breaker or anything.

Its hard on the brain, but when you know that's all there is, i force it to accept it. Yes it bothers me. Don't think i played a single game on pc in 30fps in like 15 years.

I voted "i'm ok but prefer better" - it really depends on the game and the platform.

For example, 30fps isn't such a dealbreaker in exploration-based 3rd person RPGs esp with turn-based combat, but I want to avoid 30fps in a first person game or racer if AT ALLLLL possible.

For another example, I find that 30fps feels more tolerable with a controller - with a mouse, the response to your hands is SO sensitive and "tactile" that 30fps really feels painful.

I'd never pick 30fps when 60fps is an option.

Resolution and graphic settings be damned.

nah tis grand. i prefer 60 but am happy to play at 30. beyond 60 i dont really care. racing games would be an exception...i do like my racing games to run at 60. maybe FPSs but i dont play a lot of FPSs.

i am currently playing a lot of monster hunter at 4K 30 on my vega 64 and it plays fine. any hits i take can be easily attributed to user error (err...i mean bugs in the game :P) rather than poor performance.

i did look into the sacrifices i would need to make to play it at 60FPS and the visual trade off is not worth it for me. i do look forward to when i can upgrade my PC so i can hit 4K60 with no visual downgrades. that will be nice :).

as long as its consistent. thats the main thing.

Honestly, yeah. I'll tolerate it for some game types, but it can be a deal breaker for others. 60 minimum plz.

Even for the "I prefer pretty over performance" types, I still don't get it. As soon as you're in motion, 30fps turns that pretty image to mud.

End of the day, I'll still put up with it for a great game. Had a good time with games like Bloodborne and BotW, and those games don't even hold their 30 well. Still was a constant annoyance in both games.

No, it doesn’t bother me at all. Hell even if it’s not so stable and dips here and there I’m pretty ok with it. It would have to dip hard, often, and for long periods of time for it to really bother me.

30fps on pc looks like shit, but 30 FPS on console takes about 5 min to get used to. It’s perfectly playable on consoles and I’d prefer all the graphical bells and whistles over 60fps with shitty looking textures and lighting

30fps with Motion Blur does help out alot when I don't have a choice and so with that, "I'm ok with it, but prefer better" but I'm mainly speaking on consoles.

To any console gamers regarding 30fps vs 60fps. You can literally feel it in some games...It feels less responsive and the gameplay and what's going on the screen just doesn't feel as fluid. I guarantee if you were playing a game on 60fps for about a few minutes and suddenly switched to 30fps, it would be the difference between Day/Night. All I'm gonna say about the matter is that ignorance is bliss and if you can't notice the difference between 30fps and 60fps, then you should enjoy.

Very true and for me, after getting used to 144hz, I can't go back to 60fps lol. Nevermind 30fps. It just looks and feels awful. At least you can enjoy BOTW on...PC if you know what I mean😉

That's what I have been saying for quite some time. There are more gains to be made in the user experience in higher than 60fps frame rates than there are higher, and frankly, ridiculous resolutions not to mention those who actually sit close enough to big enough screens to see those resolution improvements will lose all those gains with the lower frame rates that go with it.

I think the biggest issue with frame rate naysayers is most have played at higher FPS, and seen no difference, assuming there is no difference and not realizing that their 60hz monitors are incapable of displaying anything higher.

With a gamepad it feels alright to be fair, but when using your mouse for shooters on pc you can certainly tell the difference. It is harder to aim and slower

As long as I can see with my untrained eyes that I am not seeing a literal picture show when playing a game, I do not mind whether playing it at a stable 30 fps or not.

If Singleplayer I can deal with 30FPS but always better with higher frames.

For Multiplayer, 60FPS is minimum.

Depends on the game whether it’s tolerable, sometimes even within the same series. Tales of Zesteria for instance felt pretty decent to me despite the low locked framerate, but the Tales of Symphonia PC port’s 30fps was absolutely horrendously choppy and I never was able to get used to it (especially having played the GameCube version). I had the PS3 Symphonia Chronicles as well and that one dipped below 30 in places just to add insult to injury, pretty sad for a PS2 port.

I can deal with it but prefer better. It really all depends on the game. For Spidey Remastered and Demon's Souls, I prefer 60fps. It just feels right.

@ConanTheStoner: are you sure that's not TAA? i have found TAA to be an absolutely horrible AA solution that makes the game looks like a smear when in motion. I tried it in Horizon for example and i had to turn it off. No AA is preferable to TAA imho.

Fidelity FX CAS can do a pretty good job of cleaning it up when in motion but left untreated TAA is just awful.

Yes. I was playing games exclusively on pc for over a year. There’s no going down to 30fps anymore. I’ll be looking up games and making sure that they’re 60fps or have a performance mode on PS5 before getting them.

If it's stable, it's fine. If it's unstable, it's very annoying. On principle, 60fps is a minimum. I do occasionally run games at higher graphical settings just to see the purty pictures, but not for long.

@briguyb13 said:

Also BoTW. The unstable 30 was annoying in these, but in reality the games were so good that players don't care/forgave them.

Sure, stuff like TAA, various post effects, the response time of your display, etc. can compound the issue.

But just in general, a lower refresh rate will lead to a muddier image in motion.

I can "tolerate" it, but it needs to be absolutely rock solid with no dips, and perfect frame pacing.

If I think there is a tiny chance that a 60 fps version may be in the works, ill avoid it tho.

Just wish I'd have waited a bit longer before playing HZD, as I definitely would have preferred a 60 fps version.

I can tolerate it if there is no way to play the game at 60+ but definitely reduces my enjoyment of a game.

I need to avoid playing a different game at a higher frame rate while playing something at 30fps because the contrast in feel is so jarring.

I am curious to all of those who say they can tolerate it if you would switch to 1440P or 1080P to get 60? Is 4K worth "tolerating it?" And the same question goes to ray tracing.

To be fair, no one at the time thought to see HZD coming to PC at all and as a fan of the series, even I wasn't aware a PC version was taken into consideration. Playing it on PC now makes a huge difference despite the launch was a mess. I don't know if I could have waited for 3 years for it to come on PC...but I sure as hell did wait for RDR2 come to PC and my patience has paid off :)

Yeah, happened to me with the first Nioh. Went for performance mode, but was still a bit of a shit show on the base PS4.

I've also become more patient about it. Main reason I haven't tried Astral Chain yet, holding out for that slim chance 60 fps version.

While I prefer 60, I can't think of any time that 30fps ruined a game for me. Heck, after surviving gen 5, I can even put up with a fair amount of slowdown. Up until december, I was playing Forza Horizon 3 at 720p with a pretty unstable 30fps, and still having a great time.

High detail tree's and grass and weather. its way better than 1-2 frames here an there i mean bro. The details think about it.

The contrast isn't that different 60 fps looks cartoony on gta 5 the cars are flying around like its just too much. Theres too many honestly.

30fps is not enjoyable.

Luckily even average hardware these days can easily get to 60fps. You really don't ever need to play at 30 unless you are forced to by a console, or you have a really low-end PC.

Just hope Sony and Microsoft continue to push 60 fps. It's good for gaming.

I don't give a **** what its at, 30, 60, 2021 etc. People (and by people i mean hermits) have that mentality that more is better to try and justify their over priced parts 🤣🤣🤣

I've never bought a game because of frame rate, and i've never not bought a game because of frame rate. Its simply not a consideration.

Certain games... racing, fighting etc.. 60fps is a must.

Other stuff, can happily dwindle at the 30-40 mark.

Wow, so 76% of people are ok with stable 30fps. The Hermits have been owned!!

Anybody playing at 30fps is getting owned.

Because for you console players it's rarely ever been an option.
