Do you think we'll start hearing some PS5 rumors come 2018?

Seems like 2018 would be the time for Sony to roll out early Dev kits, or target specs if they plan to release in 2019/2020. PS4 Pro was never meant to make the generation last longer than necessary. Sony just wanted to try something new this generation and they wanted something that would take more advantage of PSVR.

7nm node process will be ready come 2019/2020 so a PS5 with around 10 Tflops of compute power will be a reality. Also, 4K TV penetration will be much larger around the time the PS5 rolls out making 4K gaming more mainstream. TLOU2 will be the PS4's swansong and most likely be a launch title for the PS5 in full Native 4K glory. I wouldn't be surprised if Death Stranding is a launch title as well.

With the mid gen consoles I can easily stretch this gen as long as last gen was.

Edit: I can, as in it would suit me just fine.

Well PS4/PS4 Pro will still be supported to some extent when the PS5 releases. PS5 coming 6 - 7 yrs after the OG PS4 seems about right. Yes, Pro came out in 2016 but I don't believe it was made to keep the generation going longer than what was expected. PS3/360 era lasted as long as it did because we went through a bad recession.

I'm pretty sure the Pro/X1X were designed specifically to extend this generation.

The X1X just released with GPU power around a GTX 1050. Next gen consoles typically release around the processing power of a lower mid-range GPU (which the 1050 is). Thats a pretty significant boost in power. A proper next gen console might give you power equivalent to a GTX 1060 and a moderm gen i3 processor. That's not much of an upgrade over the current X1X.

@UssjTrunks: Pro/XB1X was not meant to extend the generation anymore than a new iPhone does. PS5 is 100% coming out no later than 2020. That would be 7 yrs after the OG PS4 and 4 yrs after the Pro released.

Sony still believes in generations while Microsoft is considering continuing on with incremental upgrades every few years if the XB1X does well enough. So, expect an XB2 in 2021.

I think it will be released 2020, with more solid rumors cropping up in 2019. Sure there can be stuff next year, like lnkedin (these rumors are typically very boring), someone leaking a photo of something that, if you squeeze your eyes, may resemble a devkit, some specs leaking etc. Thing is though I don't think anything will be set in stone in 2018, so all rumors will be about things that not even Sony are sure of.

TLDR: Don't think we get any worthwhile rumors in 2018.

@Sushiglutton: The general idea of the tech used for a console to be released in 2020 would be known by 2018. AMD would have given Sony a roadmap by now. There might be some things they haven't finalized yet like amount of memory, # of CPU/GPU cores, but the overall architecture is most likely pretty close to finalized.

I really hope not. I still got so much to do with my PS4 in 2018 before Sony can spread PS5 rumors and I like for them to save those in late 2019. Follow by releasing PS5 in 2020.

Maybe an early 2019 announcement, with a release in holiday 2019. Or the same in 2020. Who knows.

It depends if they go the whole backwards compatibility route like Xbox. If not, it's a lot riskier and doesn't give them as much flexibility.

Yeah I think so. I’m expecting a 2019 release for the PS5. Three years with the base PS4 and three years with the PS4 Pro makes sense.

Nah. This is PS4's peak year and I don't think that One X spooked them one bit. They'll wait until 2021.

If it's rumors you're looking for we already have plenty of them circulating all over the place. It's not hard to find somebody prematurely spinning wheels about the PS5 (usually, it's a fanboy). Unless it comes from Sony themselves, it's all speculation. They have lots work ahead of them before they are anywhere near even the smallest PS5 teaser.

If the PS4 Pro is doing as well as Sony tells us, then I really don't see them rushing out a PS5. I'd say we're at least year or more away before we hear any sort of official announcement. Unless of course they're starting to feel some heat from the Switch and X1X...

I think there is no reason for PS5 to be announced. What would it bring to us over PS4? Slightly better graphics? No, thanks.

Technically it's already started. A dev on ResetEra stated that PS5 will have PS4 BC and it'll improve those titles.

Rumors, always. But Sony won't talk about PS5 until early 2019 at the very earliest, if PS5 is coming out Holiday 2019.

That said, I don't actually expect PS5 to arrive until Holiday 2020 and if that's going to be the case, I wouldn't expect Sony to announce it until early 2020 at a PlayStation Meeting, similar to how PS4 was announced in February 2013 and released that November.

Already a rumor that PS5 will have a discrete CPU and GPU.

Dump X86 while there at it, takes away the uniqueness and individual quality of hardware.

If that were true, I'm assuming that means it won't be BC with PS4? Or at least make it a lot harder.

In the case of PS4 I feel like Sony is starting to have its best moments. Games are plentiful, sales are massive and competition is trash. No need to jump the ship yet. In the case of Microsoft, I would do a Switch. Releasing its next generation console because it really is too late for them.

I predict there will not be BC anyway, just introduces more cost. Just keep your PS4, do not see a problem with that.

They could use emulation, but that will never be a perfect solution.

MS should force 60FPS from developers, having more equality with PC co-op. A selling point is better than no selling point.

Yeah i'd say they announce it at E3 2018 and release it 2019.

My reason is because they can charge full price and maximise profits while the brand is still hot.

Nope I don't believe we'll be hearing any rumors until 2019 or 2020 at the earliest.

There is a reason both Sony and MS launched Mid gen refreshes and the reason is they want this gen to last 8 years again like last gen but they know some people weren't happy with console performance the last 2 or 3 years of last gen. Launch mid gen refreshes with similar architecture extending the Gen and keeping the large installed base available to every new game.

Another thing is 10 Teraflops won't give you the feeling a New Gen is starting.

I think we'll need Over 12 TF's and closer to 18 TF's to make games feel like a New Gen at 4K.

7 NM might not do that. The next shrink down the line from 7NM is 5 NM. Maybe a 5NM $600 priced console in 2021 or 2022 could give us the Next Gen jump we need.

5 NM by 2020

Well since SONY is driving the industry, it's a toss up but with SONY's proven track record of world class gaming and innovation, I would say by 2020.

I guess in that case Sony IS your current gen 8 world class gaming leader.

Rofl, no they don't. The last time this happened was with the 360/PS4, and even that's being generous. Modern day PC technology is completely out of reach for console manufacturers.

The PS4/X1 launched with the equivlaent of the AMD 7850/7790, which were junk $100-150 GPUs at the time (or around a GTX 660 if you want an Nvidia comparison). That's not even remotely close to "high-end" at the time. The X1X just launched with the equivalent of a GTX 1050/1060 and an i3 processor. Again, not even remotely close to high-end hardware. The gap between high-end PCs and consoles today is astronomical. You're still living in the past if you think that consoles come even close to PCs.

There was a time when consoles were more powerful than PCs too (see N64/PS1). Times have changed. PC gaming has grown exponentially over the past 15 years. This demand has allowed manufacturers to produce more and more powerful hardware. Consoles have been left in the dust.

Consoles today launch with lower tier mid-end parts.

Sure but does it really matter?

Games on consoles still look great even without a 1080 GPU.

We're at a point in time where graphics are incredible even with mid-tier hardware. Some more polygons won't really change a lot, look at the transition from PS3 to PS4, it wasn't so big. We're at diminishing returns now with graphics. (excluding pushing more frames/second, better AI,...)

Depends on how much you care about graphics.

PC still pushes noticeably higher quality textures, shadows, FOV, etc. It also allows for modding for further enhanced visuals. The difference in frames is also important. 144 fps is mandatory for any e-sport title (consoles can't even hit a consistent 60 fps).

nope, as long as the PS4 keeps selling and keeps selling games and that keeps making money for Sony, pushing out a next gen system would be stupid, might be better to release a PS4 Pro 2 at this point

For sure. After Sony people have stopped laughing at X1X, they will sit down and start discussing what a real next gen console should be like.

10 Teraflops definitely can when they cut off development for base PS4/XB1 models. You have to realize that Pro and XB1X are just mainly taking base quality games and upping the resolution, sometimes adding some extra details, but still the same game overall.

With 10 Teraflops becoming the new base line developers can really push their engines further than they could before in terms of rendering quality. Not to mention the move from Jaguar to Zen CPU cores will be a huge upgrade.

I assume improved lighting systems will see a big upgrade in next-gen games/engines. Also with the much better CPU we will see much better particle effects and higher NPC count than ever before. There is a lot of little stuff that as a whole can really make next-gen games shine even with a 10 Tflop GPU.
