Hello friends,

I was browsing and i saw some old (not so old) article claiming Metro Exodus could be Half life 3 we wanted

https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2018/06/metro-exodus-world-premiere-could-this-be-the-half-life-3-we-always-wanted/

and with the reveal of DOOM Eternal recently which actually blows our mind how insane it looks. it make me realize that need of Half life 3 is no more and ended.

years ago it used to be most wanted unannounced game, then even few years ago there was needed but now look at upcoming FPS like Metro Exodus, DOOM Eternal and even RAGE 2 which may not looks impressive as former 2 but still looking excellent. and they all release in next year

Metro Exodus looks to be STALKER mix with Half life elements especially when it comes to story mix with Crysis 1 due to pushing graphics to limit and having weapon customization and snow.

DOOM Eternal is sequel to best FPS of decade and making it even better with more open level and some new interestingly fun mechanics.

Now Half life 3 alternatives are coming. it makes me realize that in this day and age. Half life 3 is not really needed. especially there will be STALKER 2 in future.

what about you friends? lets discuss

None of these games are remotely close to the style of HL or HL1

The question should be: Do we still need OP's threads anymore?

HL3 will NEVER live up to the hype yet reviewers will overrate it with 11/10 scores.

I personally hope it never gets made for that reason.

I think that hype is on Cyberpunk now and it will get 11/10 scores yet it will nowhear near as good.

Half Life was never about combat.(I haven't played that but from what I have read I know this)

So comparing it to Doom 5 is unfair.

Most of time you are in combat with some puzzle solving. so yes it is about combat too.

episode 3 in 2018? it should have been in 2008 or otherwise not. episodes are expansion that doesnot work at all.

@ghosts4ever:

Regardless of how much better these games are than Half Life, they don't continue the Half Life story. So yeah, if we ever wanna find out what happened after Episode 2 in Half Life 2 then we actually *do* need Half Life 3! For story!

I didn't like Metro and I prefer Half Life 2 to every Doom game, so I'd take a new Half-Life game over both of them.

Also, @ghosts4ever: Cyberpunk will probably deserve 11/10 scores, judging from the quality of CDPR's previous game.

People said the same thing about Halflife 2. And to the lesser degree Team Fortress 2 and Portal 2.

It probably would, but no doubt we would be filled with edge-lords trying to be snowflakes against a tide of overwhelming, life affirming praise.

Who cares about the hype? Honestly. Just make a good game worthy of the title. Valve shouldn't be held accountable if people have ridiculous expectations.

Better to let the whole franchise die.

Metro better story than Half Life? lol

If there was anything special about hl2 it was the story, the world and the characters.

Metro isn't like Half-Life, Metro is like a longer and better Call of Duty campaign. And DOOM 2016 isn't as good as the first and second game. I think I even might like DOOM 3 more than DOOM 2016. DOOM Eternal looks like more arena based battle crap, rather than going back to what made DOOM 1 and 2 good.

So yes. We still need HL3.

what? Doom Eternal broke the arena lockdown system in a favor of more open level design.

Nah, we don't. Half Life 1 was a masterpiece that deserved it's praise and status, but I never really "got" the adoration of Half Life 2. It's a great game but the gunplay is only average and the vehicle controls suck. And not by "modern standards" either, by 2004 standards. It's more the atmosphere, world, exploration and physics puzzles/combat that made it cool. As for the cliff hanger ending, doubled down on in the Episodes? That's just annoying. If they had crafted some sort of satisfying ending, it could be thought of as a complete, finished series. Oh well.

I do think we'll see HL3 some day but as others have said, it won't live up to the hype or be as special as if we got it in like 2013.

half life 2 is overrated. Half life 1 was amazing and far superior to 2. which while fun had eh AI and Eh shooting mechanics. Especially when compared to 1. If a third was made make it a mix of both 1 and 2 not just 2.

I thought it looked just as arena based as the first one from the video, but OK. I hope that's true.

Half life 3 is like Detox album by Dr.Dre

No matter how amazing and good it will be if it made it will never live to the expectations because of the hype that was built over the years.

I want Valve to get off their fat ass and stop banking soley on selling $2000 CSGO and TF2 skins.

I don't care if it's another Half Life, L4D, Day of Defeat, Portal or another propernew IP.

Well yeah, a game from 2004 is obviously going to be like a game from 2004. Of course DOOM 2016 has better shooting. With that said, for being a game from 2004 it's still really fucking good and definitely still playable. Several similar games released after HL2 are way worse.

No not really. FEAR released in 2005 and still have best combat in history. its a 2005 game that blow HL2 out of water when it comes to combat.

in 2007 STALKER released and it become most unique, innovative game of that time and surpassed half life 2 in literally every way.

I'll give you FEAR, that game is good. Not HL2 good, but good. STALKER though? That game was way too buggy to surpass HL2. I also remember the weapons feeling very weak, like peashooters, so HL2 did the shooting better.

It was postponed a good couple of times, but it is making progress.

Current release is set for Summer 2018, so that should be soon.

I used to replay the original Half Life once a year, but I stopped doing that since the Black Mesa mod launched. I want the complete experience on Source now, because Black Mesa is so awesome :)

I replayed HL2 about a month ago, and I very much disagree. It holds up surprisingly well.

I also replayed HL2 some month ago. despite it being one of my fav game. Doom combat blow HL2 combat out of water today. STALKER surpassed it in 2007.

Metro Exodus if it anything like STALKER will also be better than Half life 2.

I also remember the weapons feeling very weak, like peashooters, so HL2 did the shooting better.

it was disk version.

the patched version become masterpiece and one of the best game ever. the atmosphere was unmatched to this day. the zone is much better than city 17 to explore. the shooting was excellent. only earlier weapon were weak, once you gott AK 47 and more good weapon. it become better.

today Metro also play better than Half life 2. and looking into Metro Exodus. i dont see how its not better than HL2 when its semi sandbox like STALKER and Crysis having STALKER like atmosphere and Continuation of Excellent Story that was better than HL2.

I'm planning to play through all the Half Life games soon.

I'm just waiting on that final Black Mesa release so I can play:

  • Black Mesa
  • Half Life 2
  • Episode 1
  • Episode 2

Oh yea, I forgot about Black Mesa.

Barely updates Halflife, outside of graphics, automatically shits on all contemporary shooters.

Have you played Half-Life 1 or 2 recently?

It's still an insanely great game, even by today's standards

True: other games have better visuals, better gunplay, smarter enemies, and more depth of other various mechanics. But nothing does what Half-Life 2 does best, and that's immersion and cinematic moments without cut-scenes. Rock-solid fundamentals executed to near-perfection. And let's not forget the mods! Oh, the modifications! Modifications to rival even complete, retail games!

Do I expect Half-Life 3? No. Do I need HL3? No. Do I like to ask then answer my own questions? Yes.

But do I want HL3? Of course, I feel it would be a great game, if only to get more of the same and see where the story goes (and ends?).

HL3 will NEVER live up to the hype yet reviewers will overrate it with 11/10 scores.

I personally hope it never gets made for that reason.

You can "refuse" hype. Just because people and outlets hype something doesn't mean you have to have insane expectations. You can remain grounded and realistic.

That's the thing, though: Half-Life is the total package.

Many games might do things, individually, better than Half-Life. Gunplay, for example; totally agree with you on the FEAR bit. That game was and still is incredible. Nailing enemies to the wall with the bolt gun, slowing down time and watching individual buckshot pellets rip into enemies, and (again, slowing down time) watching mines leap into the air and the send shrapnel out horizontally in a spiral? Incredible!

But that's about all FEAR does well.

Same with STALKER. It's arguably one of the most atmospheric shooters ever made. The setting is simply stunning. But the gunplay was weak. It was buggy, and had poor production values; I've seen better quality in Half-Life mods. It was still a great game, especially modded, so I don't fault you for your opinion.

Half-Life might not have the gunplay that FEAR does, and it might not be as exciting as the DOOM reboot, and it might not have the story-telling of Dishonored or some other narrative game...but it does all the components done to an above average degree, combined with the best immersion of any game to date.
