Cyberpunk 2077 was probably the most hyped up video game of all time and obviously it didn't live up to THAT much hype.

It's practically impossible for a game to live up to THAT much hype because video games are made by Humans and Human beings do mistakes.

So what I want to ask to the individuals of the community here is that, did it live up to YOUR expectations or not?

I'm not talking about the hype, but individual expectations which every gamer has. Other than the bugs, glitches and the terrible optimisation, did the game live up to what YOU wanted in terms of gameplay, story and graphics?

Nah. Serves me right to think CD Projekt Red could implement deep RPG mechanics though. These guys are amazing writers and great at building worlds faithful to the original work, but as far as gameplay goes? They got a lot of work to do.

Not that they’ll ever evolve in that department because they sell 10s of millions.

Haven't played it, but outside of the bugs, the only issues i see is the wanted system and the ai from 2001. Actually, 2001 told me that its offended by my statement because Halo CE already had great AI back then.

for me, it really live to my expectations well enough that this game looks and plays awesome on PC but not without problems as I do run into glitches & bugs from time to time but nothing of a game breaker mind you. That said, the combat is standard for a FPS but the hacking in this game is freaking God-Tier so I'm taking the advantage of it. I still have a long way to go but I will say using RT in CP2077 is really just icing on the cake.

@davillain-: Technically is worse than I was expecting. But gameplay and storytelling are better.

The more I play it the more I love it.

Haven't played it, and won't for a while, but based on hype alone, this game was supposed to be the megahit of the generation. Instead, a lot of people got screwed over by what seems to be an unplayable game for many.

The game is great. It was sitting at an 8/10 initially, but after 70+ hours I'd probably bump that up to an easy 9/10.

It's basically everything I wanted from the game. I just wish there were more distinct playable classes, similar to how Vampire Bloodlines had their distinct clans (then again, restricting hacking to Netrunners and crafting to Techies would make the playthrough a bit boring...so maybe that's why they let V specialise in everything?).

Mostly, yes.

Hits for my expectations: addictive gameplay loop and the more you play the better it gets (lots of open world games go the opposite direction for me), super deep character customization, encounters can be approached many ways, your choices matter more than in most games

Misses for my expectations: the AI sucks, the driving is mediocre, and the bugs are pervasive (although quite minor in my experience - not a single game breaking one on my playthrough to date)

Overall, I'd definitely recommend it but would wait 3-6 months for a first playthrough.

My expectations weren't that high to begin with, id seen the pre release gameplay footage and wasn't that impressed, but I like CDPRs other games and though it would at least be well made. Even with low enthusiasm for the game I still managed to be disappointed. I hope that it one day ends up being a good game once its out of beta.

Not really.

Don't get me wrong, it's good or even great, and I didn't really build myself any hype or expectations, so I am overall enjoying it. But what I expect when paying full price, is for a game to be finished, and Cyberpunk 2077 blatantly isn't finished. It's incredibly buggy, missing some painfully obvious RPG/open world features, and has a lot of gameplay systems that don't mesh or feel super undercooked.

It's brilliant from a visual perspective, has some great sound and art, a strong enough story, and there's clearly a lot of passion on display from all the tidbits and easter eggs and things to find, but that stuff can't excuse it's current state. This should have been marketed as early access.

Yup - that could have saved them a lot of trouble if they just HAAAAD to release it now/when they did. On my machine it's basically Fallout 3 levels of goofy, but with orders of magnitude more density in terms of environmental detail and NPCs and systems. That increased density is great, BUT the problem is - especially when it comes to NPC+AI bugs - the scale-up means the quirks are more frequently visible and the quirks have many many more opportunities to rear their head.

I've been mulling over this a lot as I continue to play (and love) the game: I bet Bethesda is smirking. They get so much trash for having put out 1st-person RPGs that share a lot of design principles with CP2077 and have these very same issues - then the golden boy (CDPR) comes along and tries to do it with the knob turned to 11 and would you look at that... it's kind of like a TES or nuFallout with everything turned up to 11: including the bugs.

"not so easy, is it, you smarty pantses"

Coming into it skeptical that they would avoid those kind of Bethesda-open-world-itis issues, I was not too surprised.

The saving grace is the stuff that makes TES+Fallout games fun is just as strong here (IMO), and the core plot and major side-threads are orders of magnitude more coherent and compelling (as was true for TW3).

mostly met my expectations, minus a few too many bugs and the main story being a bit shorter than expected.

The world, gameplay and characters and quality of quests are all about what I expected, at least it will be once the AI gets fixed up a bit (its not that its just dumb, it frequently breaks and behaves inconsistently).

After 50 hours i'd give it an 8/10 but I'd suggest anyone interested wait a few more months minimum before getting it. It could get to 9/10 status with some more updates.

Although I always believe CDPR were overrated but sadly i was hype for cyberpunk expecting it to be Deus Ex and got bad version of watch dogs.

Mostly yes though I'm still not far in the game so my opinion could change.

Night City is vast, beautiful and detailed. The main quest and side stories are interesting and offer meaningful choices. Gameplay/combat is deep enough to be fun. It reminds me of an open world Deus Ex in a way.

Some aspects of the game are definitely subpar like AI, law enforcement and driving. The NPCs populating the city are not as bad and fake as I was led to believe.

How does hacking compare to a game like Watch Dogs?

Watch Dogs was disappointing and the hacking left a lot to be desired in that game.

If I ignore performance issues and bugs the game still fails to meet my expectations. I've always thought TW3 was criminally overrated but the early footage of CP2077 looked like it might break their past mechanisms. I'd give the game a solid 8 to 8.5.

Pros:
- Gunplay and fighting feels great
- Plenty of ways to play your character or tackling missions
- Game is gorgeous on PC
- Art design and soundtrack
- Main storyline is compelling
- Brain dance mechanic is intriguing

Cons:
- AI sucks
- Driving sucks
- Wanted system sucks
- Side quests largely irrelevant
- Gigs/Police requests copy/pasted
- City is non-interactable and shallow
- Animations of characters feel lackluster/lack of motion capture
- Brain dance mechanic not used enough
- Receiving missions through calls/texts is annoying and non-immersive

CDPR promised the most expansive RPG and world imagined and the final product isn't even close. It does many thing very well, but crafting an immersive world with depth isn't one of them. If I pull the issues with bugs back into the mix then it gets even worse.

CP2077 doesn't copy Watch Dogs hacking games at all, they are both very different in terms of hacking cause CP2077 isn't a simple hack-click, you sometimes gotta play matching numbers in order to execute hacking on a bad guy.

I didn't really have expectations..... I didn't follow the hype or really look into the game at all before release. I knew I was interested in the style of game and setting.

I can say there are things I am disappointed in, as well as other things that completely awe me.

Overall I am having fun. There are things I think need to be added and fixed.

I guess I expected it to have less bugs, but I have no idea why.

Yes and no.

While unlikely, I was secretly hoping Cyberpunk 2077 would dethrone the original Deus Ex; Deus Ex is my favorite game of all time maybe, and it was released 20+ years ago. There hasn't been a first-person RPG in that time that did what it did better.

But that was an unrealistic hope, and I knew that.

With that said, Cyberpunk has been a lot of fun, and I look forward to my second playthrough (I just beat the game, took about 30 hours but I stopped a lot of the other missions about halfway through).

It's also the first open-world game where, after the initial introduction and few hours and the world opened up, I actually stayed and explored. Night City is a great place to look around and there's tons of side missions and content to do.

It's an objective 7/10 for me, and one of the better games of the year. Top 10 easily. It has a couple glaring issues--specifically AI, bugs, and the "crime" stat spawning cops instantly around you--but it's still a diamond in the rough and I totally expect it to be an amazing game after a big patch or two (hopefully by February...I can't wait for my second playthrough but I am waiting until things are ironed out).

Hacking enemies in this game is what magical abilities are in usual RPGs. So, aim at an enemy > pick a spell > cast said spell > wait for a cooldown/repeat.

No. With all we saw that was shown, the hype, the episodes etc. I don't see how anyone could have expected less.

Just goes to show that even the most hyped games will let us down and that no game can ever live up to our lofty expectations.

Thank you everyone for your responses. I really appreciate them and, keep them coming! So far, MOST of the people seem to be BOTH disappointed and satisfied with this game. Therefore, it turns out that Cyberpunk 2077 is a good game with both pros and cons, and not a "revolutionary masterpiece" as many people were making it out to be pre-release due to all the hype going on for it. And that's understandable, since as I said, no game can live up to THAT much hype.

Those are my thoughts as well after playing nearly 38 hours of it on my computer and completing the main campaign(Corpo path), plus a few sidequests. It's a good game(3/5 from my side)even with all the bugs, glitches and performance issues and it COULD be a very good game(it COULD go from 3/5 to 3.5/5)IF most of the bugs and glitches in it are fixed and the optimisation eventually becomes better.

@maximumcrysis09:

If you're playing on PC, remember that there are tons of mods on Nexus that enhances the game. One of which is the skip intro mod(lol), vehicle physics mod and disabling double-tap for dodging.

@jasonofa36: I've stopped playing it for now because the bugs and glitches were getting over my nerves and killing the immersion. I'd probably touch it again after 3 months when it's patched to hell. Thanks for the suggestions, though. I don't know about others, but I'd definitely get the vehicle physics mod.

Nope, I had high hopes, but I am not even angry about it. Have an XSX to play it on. Didn't bother to refund it yet and likely won't. Mainly want to play it more in an academic way, or like doing an autopsy on it. Clear to me even despite performance issues and glitches the game was still only half baked in many ways on design side, so funny to see some committed fans fighting to defend the game's reputation. But like many game's out there that turned things around, will be interesting to see if they will ever do so, or even try. At least games like Sea of Thieves or No Man's Sky worked, just lacked content, so devs added it. CP2077 is going to need a complete gutting and reworking not just added content IMO, I don't see it ever happening, I think company might be bogged down in legal disputes with investors and nothing will get done except glitch fixing, which IMO isn't close to enough.

I finished the game a couple of days ago, around the 90-hour mark. I've only seen one of the endings so far, but I was really satisfied with what I got.

Overall, I had a really positive time with the game. There are shortcomings with the AI and police mechanics, and a few visual glitches here and there, but I barely even noticed them after a while. Everything else was really good - the gameplay (hacking/stealth/shooting), the writing, the visuals, the music, the skill trees and customisation, etc.

I know people have been waiting a long time to throw abuse at CDPR, but if this is the worst game they ever release, then it's still a better game than most of the output of major AAA developers.

"Wait for cooldown"

Ha! I see you haven't invested deeply in hacking, if cooldowns or RAM are an issue.

By the end of the game, I didn't even have to draw my weapon. I could murder buildings full of enemies, from outside of the building, and reset all my cooldowns while doing so.

Oh wow. I knew this game's open world was trash, but that's truly quite astonishing. To think this got 9s and 10s...

I know people give Bethesda shit for buggy games and over promising, but at least they seem to make a genuine attempt within the confines of their outdated tech. Oblivion's NPCs were kinda messed up, but when they worked they at least gave the impression of sentience. The NPCs in CP2077 may as well be portable human shaped billboards. Listening to the promises in all the promotional videos is just pure comedy in light of the released product.

Yea, it's kind of mind blowing how little of what they said made it into the game.

Not really. Didn't have high expectations, and I knew it was definitely not going to be the best game ever created, as it was hyped to be, but I didn't know just how shitty it would be. Thought it would be buggy, but not that buggy. I thought CDPR would get crap for it, but not that much crap.

I basically just misjudged how overhyped the game was. The game, except for the copious amount of bugs, is about as good as I thought it would be.

Yes, it mostly lived up to my expectations.

I only got hyped for the game 7 days before release when I preordered it.

34 hours with the game and I like it a lot. Playing on PS4 Pro with an external SSD. I get traffic and no blurry NPC faces. In my PS4 Pro Settings under resolution I set it to 1080p and no HDR. Only 2 crashes so far and 1 was my fault.

No it did not.

Agreed with that review. I expected AAA. It feels very AA (except the gfx). Even Obsidians latest open world fps was more polished/finished feeling and not just in terms of bugs. Compare it to RDR2 or GTAV and oh boy, feels a gen behind (other than the gfx).

Most 9s and 8s from big review sites are from hype and fanboyism, hence the low user scores from real people.

I've been saying this about the open world of NC for a while, it is OK in it's own right but it doesn't even stack up to GTAV or RDR2 when we look at world mechanics. CDPR promised things that simply aren't there. The world is covered by a veneer of beauty that quickly fades once you dive into it. It's pretty but shallow.

Ehhh.

I really wanted to like The Outer Worlds, but I bounced off it pretty hard after the Steam release a few months ago. It felt like budget Fallout with a cramped, uninteresting world and wonky gameplay. I wouldn't say it was anywhere near as polished as CP2077 - the AI was worse, the world was less detailed/interactive, and I didn't feel like my character skill options were making much of a difference to my gameplay style (although maybe that's because I only played around 5-10 hours before uninstalling it?).

The Outer Worlds was the first time I've been really disappointed with an Obsidian game, tbh.

I think outerworlds was more polished bug wise, there was simply so much less to BE polished though.

I never had expectations since I wasn't familiar with the game or any of the hype. However, I heard once that Keanu Reaves was a good actor, so I was expecting that. Unfortunately what I got was some of the worse acting and voice acting I had ever had to sit through. Worse than PS1 era stuff. I hope eventually there is a mod to completely eliminate Keanu Reeves from the game with a different model, and better voice actor.

Hype aside it's a mixed bag, the main quest I actually really enjoyed and is ultimately what got me through a completion, the environmental presentation with crowd density and general atmosphere is also commendable. For me if you have the hardware the game is worth a playthrough.

As has been well publicized there are plenty of bugs and glitches that can ruin your experience but we'll operate on the assumption the worst of these will be fixed, so I'm not going to drill down on those as part of the critique.

Customisation, CC is full of depth and there are a plethora of clothing/armor options, unfortunately the acquisition of clothes/armor is highly random and can make for a frustrating experience, the CC itself has almost 0 value due to the rarity with which you get to see your character, for all the supposed benefit of first person immersion for my money no third person option in this game was a mistake.

Ai, this was frankly poor, pathfinding around obstacles being almost non existent, clear alert radii, whilst crowd densities etc. are impressive they are ultimately undermined by what can only be described as rudimentary AI behaviour, for a world that looks so good it becomes very jarring.

Sidequests, there are some good sidequests via Panam and other secondary characters, there's a brief but interesting NCPD quest line and I'm sure plenty I missed during my playthrough, unfortunately a greater number of the sidequests than I would like felt very much like filler and ultimately pointless adding little value to the experience.

I could go on, there is a game worth playing there for certain and I would hope the game/content improves from here, that said for me this is not another TW3 where you can sink an ungodly amount of time into the game, I wouldn't be surprised if for a lot of people this is very much a one and done experience.

Yes. I expected it to bomb and it did, well at least with the users.
