can anything beat zelda botw for game of the year?

What games releasing (or possibly releasing) for the rest of the year do you think could topple zelda for those goty awards? The likes of horizon and persona 5 are amazing games but havnt been received like botw was. The only one I can think of is red dead redemption 2. Is there anything else?

Yeah. This year has been excellent with Persona 5, Nioh, Nier and Horizon Zero Dawn. It's also not over yet with games like Mario and Xenoblade coming.

I think we will get quite a diverse list of winners by the year end.

Depends if TLOU Part 2 gets released this year..... Also got Days Gone too....

It'd take something crazy to knock Zelda out of the industry darling spot this year. Though I hope Mario Odyssey can give it a good fight.

RDR 2 or Mario, TLOU wont be this year, rest dont stand a chance

Nah, its only competition will be RDR2 but since the first was a major GOTY winner the second will get a 9/10 here and Zelda will win.

The winner will be a game noone suspects: Aassassin's Creed Empire. A year off, hungry for revenge, amazing setting, it will blow everything else out of the water :)!

Zelda will win. A properly awesome Zelda game (which this one is) is unbeatable.

Theoretically yes. But I don't think any other game is going to make me feel as joyful as I did when playing Zelda. This Zelda is a paradigm shift.

That said, this year of gaming is fantastic. I have already played more than 10 games that should be in the top 10... and I am very much looking forward to (like 50+) games that are going to come out this year.

RDR2 will beat it pretty easily i think.

I think Splatoon 2 or Mario Odyssey is only thing that has a chance. But i have doubts they can take on Zelda.

regardless what comes this Zelda is not game of the year. This Zelda is overrated by far, not saying its a bad game but no where near as good as people make it seem. the dungeons are a complete disappointment. they removed so much of what made the Zelda games good and it didn't work out so well. and yes I have the game.

This year has absolutely been crazy. All of the games you listed could be a GOTY contender. And there's still more to come!

It's either RDR2 or Mario Odyssey, but even those games have a very slim chance.

Zelda basically has it in the bag.

If Super Mario Odeysee wins Game of the Year, it would be a major upset against Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wind. This may happen if the game received scores similar to Super Mario Galaxy.

Well it won't be my GOTY and that's all that matters to me.

@jumpaction: Don't get me wrong Zelda will probably win everywhere, but my GOTY will get announced at E3 and should be out around September :)

If Crackdown 3 comes out this year it could give FM7 a run because i heard MS got the team who made the original to make 3, i'm a fan of the first game, but not the second, so time will tell how it turns out.

I don't really know. I have only played two games this year: Breath of the Wild and Blaster Master Zero. I love BoTW and haven't really gotten into BMZ at all.

I also can't wait to try Specter of Torment. I adore Shovel Knight. Right now, it's looking likely that it will be Breath of the Wild but there are so many games this year that I am interested in playing. It could wind up being God knows what.

For people it is as good as they claim it to be. For you it isn't. Doesn't make it overrated. There's no objective metrics to rate a video game. It's not sports teams or athletes that can be judged by statistics.

Bayonetta 2 got a perfect 10 and did not received GOTY. Overwatch didn't receive a perfect score and still got GOTY. So yes there are existing games and upcoming games that can take GOTY. Breath of the Wild is not my game of the year and I expect other outlets would share a similar view. Its unfortunate that this game is going to take the prize for the most overrated game ever and its mainly due to the game receiving undue praise. I will never forget the claims of it being the largest persistent open world game ever made and the largest seamless game ever made. The madness is truly stellar.

I hope more open world games share some ideas it had.

The only thing that other games can take as far as I am concern from BOTW is the glider and free climb. I can already feel the references to Just Cause with regards to the glider. BOTW can adopt some mechanics from Horizon and Horizon from BOTW.

Overall I thing Zelda will dominate gotys, but I hope RDR will be even better, because it would have to be a truly superb game.

Mario Odyssey, maybe

Personally, Persona 5 gives it a good run for its money

@Pedro: I like how Breath of the Wild handles the open world. The environment isn't a static entity. Different environments actually make a mechanical difference. It's not just space between your objective. Exploration is also great because it lets you figure stuff out for yourself. Too many games rely so heavily on the mini-map these days. I'd rather games gave me less information.
