I would say Grand Theft Auto takes the cake. Although its main subject is overall crime, the way it depicts the drug world in a humorous but also intelligent way is why for me GTA is the king of storytelling for action games.

Probably missing something obvious here, but legit can't think of a single good game based on drugs.

Even something like Disco Elysium which can heavily involve drugs. Probably the best example of actual role playing in a video game, but still not that good of a game.

I appreciate how over the top stupid NARC is, but been forever since I've played it and honestly doubt it's any good.

So uh... Mario. Yeah. Just pretend it's about some Brooklyn plumber on a horribly bad trip. Makes sense.

Fallout isn't based on drugs but it has many like Mentats, Buffout, Psycho, Med-X, Jet, and others. They played noticeable roles in combat and quests.

Was there a game that GameSpot review more than a year ago that was some sort of marijuana simulator? Even though I never understand why the fuss over a mind-altering drug like marijuana that justifies its legalization for recreational use, I was surprised that game themed on the drug existed.

GTA: Chinatown wars

In Vice City you could own properties that dealed in drugs

In Vice City Stories this went even further

In Chinatown Wars you straight up were a drug dealer and had to sell stuff at a profit

Narc, its really simple by today's standards but still dumb fun.

Blitz the League 1@2, you could give players roids and other drugs to increase their performance or to get them back in the game after a brutal injury.

Fallout and that sweet sweet Jet...

You can make entire builds revolving around being a junkie or a booze hound. Many perks are designed around getting bent

An old drug game most people have never heard of:

Exile / XZR

It was an action RPG for the PC Engine and Sega Mega Drive. It was like a proto-Assassins-Creed, about a time-travelling Assassin from medieval Syria.

Unlike potions in most RPGs, you instead take drugs for healing and stats, e.g. hashish, cocaine, opium, LSD and marijuana. Although the drug references were toned down in Western versions outside Japan.

The word "Assassin" apparently meant "hashish addict" originally in Arabic ("Hashishin"). Exile took this meaning quite literally by making its Assassin hero a druggie.

GTA Chinatown wars is the best drug dealer game ever made. I could just research best prices and make deliveries without touching a mission for hours and hours.

Awesome game... Still.

The LSD trip in GTA5 and the drunk fight in RDR2 are cool drug moments in videogames.

Glad to see Hotline Miami and Chinatown Wars mentioned. Would be my picks as well.

Not sure if they're really "based on drugs" though.

An Assassin was a member of a Shia Muslim sect who at the time of the Crusades was sent out on a suicidal mission to murder prominent enemies. Assassins are named because they smoked or chewed hashish, hence, "hashish addict."

Afterparty, I think the drink cocktails characteristics of altering the players choices in how it affects them was a fun approach to its design.

I think it's interesting how series like Fallout treat drugs, you get short term stat boosts but suffer stat penalties after.

Far Cry 4's mind altered sections were quite amusing, either the missions where they player was drugged by those two guys, or those spiritual visions or whatever that were triggered in various sections.

Do you know if any of the Assassin's Creed games explored the connections between the Assassins and the medieval drug trade?

Oh shit, is that a version of Dope Wars?

Played that on DOS, oh, 20 or 25 years ago?

Your options were "Buy", "Sell" or "Jet". You would be chased by "Officer Hardass" and "X of his deputies", where X was based on how much Coke you had. You travelled around the boroughs of New York. All text based, mind.

Damn, that WAS the best drugs game!

Edit: Here we go! The "Trenchcoat" reference in both makes me think this IS a version of Dope Wars!

Another vote for Hotline Miami for me. Alternatively, GTA Vice City also for the 80's cocaine Scarface type story.
