Half-Life 1 the tram scene
Doom 2/Ultimate Doom/Half Life 1 ...I cant decide which I like most. No other FPS can I play 20 years later and still enjoy as much as I did when they were new.
majority prefer Half life 1 over 2 which I can see but Half life 2 imo was natural evolution. and have fully develop characters, unlike mustache scientists.
gunplay was better in Half life 1 but everything else HL2 done better especially last part of game.
@ghosts4ever: it did… just the hunting and crafting aspect alone was brand new and been copied on a billion games since… even your precious doom has intergraded weapon and skill upgrades inspired by farcry so laugh all you want..
I'd say Doom/Quake of old.
Cause you could mod and make whatever the hell you wanted.
Before the days of locked down $ DLC.

crafting and hunting have been in gaming long before far cry 3.

Halflife 2 definitely has shit gun-play compared to Half-life. If take it purely as an FPS, as in the mechanics of shooting, it's not great.
Episode 1 improves the combat situations greatly, but the guns themselves still feel underwhelming.
Alyx fixes this, it's shooting and guns are impeccable, if limited in scope.
Unfortunately it barely has any fire-fights and the AI has been dialled down for people new to VR.
@casey-wegner: Metroid does have a lot of shooting anyway and does it well. Some of the best bosses in any FPS too.
It was classified as an FPA by some because at the time the genre was so limited to linear arcade style shooters. Metroid Prime was ahead of its time and now that other games have caught up they might all classify as FPA anyway.
To me it's just one genre and I count Metroid Prime as FPS. If Half Life 2 and Titanfall 2 are FPS then MP is definitely an FPS.
I mean, if you're carrying a gun and are shooting things, it's an fps.
I'd say an FPA would be a first person game with no guns or weapons, just adventure, and even then it would probably better fall into another sub category like first person survival, puzzle, rpg, or strategy.
Crysis 2 for me gameplay is just so much fun with the Nanosuit powers " it gives me options" playing the game the way i want ;) + game looks sick playng it in slow motion on pc with all the explosions details etc

If Half life 2 release today. many people would consider it dumbed down version of original.
Its far easier even on hardest difficulty.
